4.0 out of 5 stars A decent effort by Sony...
I use my Sony Micro Vault at home on Windows XP and at my office on Windows XP Pro. I've also used it on a Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook.

Pros

1. The cover snaps on snugly. In comparison to other drives, the cap is less likely to come off by accident. A durable cap is important since you don't want the USB connector getting soiled or damaged.

2.0 out of 5 stars Fragile and Overpriced
I've used both the 64MB and 128MB version. The Sony Micro Vault is way overpriced in comparision to its competetion. I can get twice the storage capacity on a San Disk Mini Cruzer for the same price. The Mini Cruzer is built a lot better too. The Micro Vault has a cheap plastic case and everyone I've use has eventually pulled apart exposing the board inside. This is the...

4.0 out of 5 stars A decent effort by Sony..., November 4, 2003
This review is from: Sony 128 MB USB 2.0 Micro Vault (Personal Computers)
I use my Sony Micro Vault at home on Windows XP and at my office on Windows XP Pro. I've also used it on a Dell Inspiron 1100 Notebook.

Pros
----
1. The cover snaps on snugly. In comparison to other drives, the cap is less likely to come off by accident. A durable cap is important since you don't want the USB connector getting soiled or damaged.

2. Size and Style - it's slightly larger than most pen drives, so it's not so easy to lose. Very cool styling.

3. Performace - So it doesn't write at full USB 2.0 speed. That really shouldn't come as a surprise; I don't know of any pen drives that do. Still, it's fast, and definitely much faster than USB 1.0 or 1.1

4. Ease of use. The drive gets recognized in both versions of XP without a hitch. It's true plug-and-play as far as XP is concerned. I haven't tested it on other OS's. It appears to be fully backward-compartible with USB 1.1.

5. The drive has a small led built in that blinks when data is being written or read.

Cons
----
1. Size. (Okay, so I'm conflicted on this one). It's slightly larger than most pen drives, so it looks kind of chunky and not as cool as some. The styling is tasteful, but if only it could've been a bit smaller.

2. Cost. As one user stated, this drive costs more than the average drive does. That's Sony for you.

Reliability remains a question mark at this point, as I have had the drive for only a month or so. In my experience, Sony generally builds good stuff. I know there are exceptions to this, but everything I've bought from Sony has lasted a good long time.

Whichever pen drive you buy, it's probably best to assume that with abuse comes failure. Pen drives should be handled with care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent device, even works in Linux., October 16, 2003
This review is from: Sony 128 MB USB 2.0 Micro Vault (Personal Computers)
A nice little drive with only a few small beefs about it.

One being that the lanyard/keychain loops are too small for most keychains, though a small metal link could probably be bent through it as long as it is smaller then 14 gauge.

The size of this drive is a little fatter then some i have seen, but makes it a bit easier to keep track of in your pocket, you would probably be best to keep this with you in a Laptop/Book bag, briefcase, or your purse though to make sure it is safe. It is very light so it is almost like carrying nothing despite its shape.

This drive works perfectly under both 2000 and XP and only experienced some issues with the 98 drivers it comes with. Have not tried it under ME or 98SE yet.

You can even get this badboy working under Linux (i used RH9) if you FDISK it properly. Took me a few hours to get it to work but was fun when i did (I am a linux n00b so it dosn't take much know-how, just a good website and patients.)

I have not tried any of the software it comes with yet, so i cannot give an honest opinion on it.

5.0 out of 5 stars great product, only few minor issues, September 2, 2003

can't give this easy memory storage device less than 5 stars even though it could be improved upon slightly. works on every computer i've tried it on, no problems with data integrity. of course, it is a little larger than some of the other usb flash media devices. the only other thing i would change is the keychain/neck-string hole so that the microvault could actually fit onto a normal sized keychain. it has fallen out of my pocket several times, and i don't think that would have happened had it been on my keychain. on the other hand, the dell devices have a hole fit for a keychain, and they seem to get pretty beat up by the keys, so you may not want this feature anyway. overall, does everything you could ask for and is very compatible with pc and mac computers.

This is the only drive I've had do this. Its just crappy design, trying to make it look cool at the cost of durability. It isn't the most compatible drive either. Works fine in XP but on every 98 or ME system I've used it on driver installation has been hell, requiring multiple reboots to make the machine detect it. The Mini Cruzer has been an easy install on older OS for me.

Overall it does what its suppose to but there are far more reliable, far cheaper, far more compatible and far more durable drives out there.

This product is SO convenient. Unlike my first USB keychain drive, it fits into every USB port I've run across without needing an extension cord or adapter.

If you are a person who needs to use several different computers in the course of a day or week, and you never seem to have the right files with you, I highly recommend this drive. I just wish I'd bought the 256MB version--maybe next payday! :)

1.0 out of 5 stars Micro vault is a very sensitive storage media, January 15, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony 128 MB USB 2.0 Micro Vault (Personal Computers)
After i bought this product Sony 128MB USB 2.0 Micro Vault, I accidentaly removed the unit in the USB port withoutproperly ejecting the unit it becomes defective. I visit the sony service center if they can still repair the unit maybe the system was just corrupted, ask them if they can repair or re-install the operating system. Sony cannot give me a clear answer and since i already lost the receipt & the box they cannot help me. And one more thing, they are looking for the serial number w/c is written on the box or package. Usually, after opening the box i already throw it away. Sony supposed to write the serial number on the unit itself not in the box or package. After all of this predicament that i experience, is this unit become useless???.can sony make this a more user friendly?
