Product Description

From the Manufacturer

Sony make . believe

Sonnar T* FE 35mm F2.8 ZA Full-frame Prime Lens

The small size, versatile 35mm focal length, and outstanding overall performance of this Carl Zeiss Sonnar T* lens make it an ideal match for compact 35mm full frame format E-mount bodies. Although the optical design is state-of-the-art, this superb wide angle lens remains true to the original Sonnar concept with a bright F2.8 maximum aperture (“Sonne” means “sun” in German). Three double-sided aspherical elements minimize aberration so that stunning contrast and resolution are maintained right out to the image edges at all apertures. The renowned T* lens coating contributes to natural color reproduction as well.

Using this lens on an A7 camera.

This is an initial assessment, as I've only owned the lens/camera combo for a few days now. But I feel I've taken enough shots to give a reasonable first impression.

First, I find the build quality quite high. The lens feels sturdy, and is made of metal. The fact that it's weather sealed is a bonus that cannot be ignored in this area as well. The focusing ring moves smoothly, and is just shy of being too stiff, which is to say the action is very good but not excellent (for me). Lens hood is well-designed, and its diminutive size keeps you from ever wanting to remove it.
On the A7, this lens is extremely compact, and the couple compares favorably to say, an Olympus E-M1 with the 17mm f1.8 lens. Given this fact, I don't mind that the widest aperture is only 2.8.

The autofocus of the lens is quite fast. While I don't have anything to compare it to on the A7, I will say that in congress, the couple makes quite the speedy pair, especially in good light. When things get dim, it tends to hunt just a bit more, but really not too much. Compared to an Oly E-M5 with the 17mm 1.8, the combo is a bit slow, but not so much that I'm particularly worried about it.

I find the resolution of the lens to be excellent. The center is already very, very good from 2.8, and stopping down to f4 brings it tack sharp. The edges are slightly behind, but not by much, and stopping down will yield very sharp images across the frame.

The vignetting characteristic of the lens is a little on the high side at f2.

superb, sharp lens. I recently also bought the sigma 35mm f1.4 with the sony laea4 adapter, when comparing the 2 on paper. The sigma should be better but the CZ blows it away in sharpeness and over all usability. Its very light, a pleasure to carry around and take pics. Also with the sigma + laea4 combo i noticed a lot of purple fringing.

This is a wonderful sharp lens and a good start to the E-mount lenses that Sony is making for full frame cameras. It has an odd hood on it and I observed vignetting with it when the hood is on but no vignetting was noted with the hood off. The hood protects the lens quite nicely but it is inverted inward. The lens is made of a high quality plastic. I am a Canon user and at first the plastic was hard to get used to but it is very light weight (which I love) and the lens is smooth to use. The lens hood has a perfect fit and is locked on solidly when it is put on. With this lens on, my camera fits neatly into my purse and makes the Sony A7R easy to carry as a pocket camera.
I am not seeing any chromatic aberrations but am still in the process of testing the lens. I have the Sony RX1 and feel that this lens is comparable to the lens on the RX1. I am hoping that Sony comes out with an ultra wide angle lens soon…..but for now, this is a good start……..

Beautiful and quaint lens. I have no complaints beyond some occasional green fringing when wide open. Would have been nice to have OSS but not sure it's necessary at this focal length paired with the 2.8

This lens is very very sharp on my A7. Only minimal vignetting and corners sharpness is very good. The center is great. The lens is light and small, auto focus is very fast. I can see why they decided on an f2.8 as part of a travel or carry around kit; this makes the camera very portable with not much compromise except in extremely low light. Awesome!

I bought this lens when I first bought my Sony A7 and to date this lens has produced the sharpest images on that camera. I also purchased the 50mm and that lens is also sharp but the 35mm is totally sharp.

I have had this lens on 5 shoots now.

Its held up really well I thought id have some scratches or some bad things to say about its limitations or something after having it a month. Well I was wrong, I love it its always going with me, and even if I don't use it it weighs about nothing and is a no brainer to take. When its dark or I know I'm gonna need something that focuses faster than everything else I have for the a7r this is the lens I grab.

This lens is brilliant, very sharp, nice color rendering and all around a fantastic pair for the a7. While the lens itself is brilliant, I did buy an open box model from Amazon Warehouse at a discount, but ended up returning it for a new model because the open box had more cosmetic scratches than the description led me to believe. Bottom line, get the lens, but be careful if buying open box merchandise.
