3.0 out of 5 stars Heat the videogame...
A cops versus robbers game sounds fantastic, and Payday the Heist does it okay. It is strictly a multiplayer game, singleplayer serving as just a way to learn the different heists ins and outs. The game feels tedious some of the time, and the amount of cops that mob you is absurd, but the game is fun in small doses.

5.0 out of 5 stars 'PAYDAY: The Heist'...Getting better with each patch. The Pros and Cons. 4 1/2 Stars, October 24, 2011
This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
'Payday' is a FPS computer game from Sony Online Entertainment. This was a 'Steam' download and was priced at less that $20.00. This can be played either as a single player or on-line as 4 player co-op. (with friends or random players)

The Game:
You are one of four bank robbers. You are given instructions by your boss who is in contact with you with an earpiece. The jobs are straight forward...get in, get the loot and get out. Except that things never, ever go as planned, and this is what makes this game so good.

The Pros:
1.) tense, gripping, non-stop action. Hard to explain just how visceral this game is.

2.) enemies (the cops) are randomly inserted for each game...so every game is different (although the maps are the same). Same as L4D2.

3a.) experience factor...as you continue to play you gain experience...allowing you better weapons, larger ammo clips, armor, etc. Also your skills as a shooter noticeably improves with experience. But don't be fooled by these apparent RPG-like upgrades...this game is primarily a FPS.

3b.) experience factor...players (in co-op) can easily play together (to a limited degree) even though they may have significant differences in experience levels. Higher level players will have better weapons and access to some advanced items Playing on easy, normal, hard or overkill seems to change the cops' toughness, how often and how many of them will appear on any given map.

4.) mid game joining is now possible since the latest patch...a major improvement.

5.) diamond heist and slaughter house maps now playable on normal, hard and overkill (were previously only playable on hard and overkill).

6) a pulsating, staccato theme played in the background. This music perfectly compliments the sense of urgency that prevails throughout the game.

7.) although playable as single player (and this is a useful format for getting acquainted with the game or map) it is in the 4 player co-op that this game shines. To succeed you MUST play as a team (in some ways even more so than L4D).

8.) initially, the game looks deceptively easy...it isn't. There is a learning curve with this game. You must be patient and you must communicate and work as a team. Players that go off on their own or teams that go too fast tend to meet grizzly endings.

9.) you now can push a key to talk!

10..) played through 'Steam'...'steam' sets up your co-op games and keeps your games updated with the latest patches as needed.

Cons:
1.) when another player is joining a game already in progress, the game being played freezes for 10 to 15 seconds while the new player is getting in.

2.) you cannot open or close doors...didn't realize how much of an advantage this was in L4D2 until couldn't do it in 'Payday'. It would have added a little more realism and at the same time provided some momentary shelter to heal or reload.

Impressions:
A great game...if you like that rush you get in L4D2 when you play co-op with really good players or friends, then you'll absolutely loved this.
It is tense, visceral with a sense of urgency...all enhanced by a pulsating musical background theme.
Since mid-gaming joining has begun, playing with friends is much easier
It is almost as good as L4D2...and all for less than $20.00.
However as it is...4 1/2 Stars

5.0 out of 5 stars Great value, February 23, 2012
This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
It's not realism, but it gives you the visceral rush feel of being in every "heist-gone-wrong" movie. Every match is 15 minutes of pure adrenaline. Drop in. Nick some loot. Blast some cops. GTFO.

It's like the bank robbery clips from movies you watch on youtube, with all the "one-more-job" dialogue and girlfriend-with-a-heart-of-gold angst cut out.

I bought it on release for $20. I've gotten far more entertainment out of it than many $50-$60 games.

At $5, it's a steal.

5.0 out of 5 stars Very fun, very replayable..., February 23, 2012
This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
- game elements (objectives, npc locations, enemy spawns) change from game to game, making each game feel relatively unique

- one to four player co-op against extremely crafty AI

- extremely replayable, dedicated players often have hundreds of hours logged

- brilliant adrenaline pumping soundtrack

- good variety of weapons and tools augmented by a leveling system

- unique rubberband netcode makes game run smoothly regardless of players' distance from each other

- sense of teamwork and accomplishment from really thrashing a heist is amazing

- the higher difficulties are quite hard, very easy to fail on if a team doesn't work together well

- the developers constantly work to improve the game and tend to be very vocal within the game's community

- there's an upcoming DLC pack that will expand the game content significantly

- it's super cheap, even without a sale going on

I cannot recommend this game enough.

5.0 out of 5 stars Payday - A Simple Amoral Shooter that's a BLAST!, October 24, 2011

This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
Do you like the "Left 4 Dead" games? Did you like the movie "Heat" with De Niro, Pacino, Sizemore, and Kilmer? Then you will like "Payday-The Heist". The game dispenses with any complex mechanics and focuses on immersing in you in movie heist-inspired scenarios and thrusting you in chaotic, intense shooting action. Those who feel squirmy about shooting police better stay away, as you'll rack up huge body counts of them in "Payday", but otherwise this game is a joy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The ultimate criminal FPS adrenaline rush, February 28, 2012

This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
Published in 2011 by Sony Online Entertainment and Developed by Overkill Software (founded by ex-members of the now defunct Grin Studios), Payday: The Heist is a cooperative first-person-shooter in which you play as one member of a four person professional criminal heist group. Objectives vary from robbing banks, stealing money from drug-lords, busting convicts out of a prison convoy, stealing diamonds from a high-rise security vault, high jacking a gold-filled armored convoy and stealing back currency printing plates from a traitorous accomplice. To accomplish these goals the players arm themselves with a variety of firearms and equipment which increases as you successfully pull of heists. During the jobs you'll encounter multiple levels of law enforcement from security guards to blue uniforms to various heavily armored S.W.A.T. and even spec ops "Sam Fisher" lookalikes. You'll also be responsible for subduing and controlling multiple amounts of civilians found amongst the heists. Combine all of these factors with the main plan of get in, get the loot and get out and you're in for one h*ll of a ride. Here are my thoughts on the incredibly unique and engaging masterpiece that is Payday: The Heist;

Pros

+ Random enemy generation creating a unique play experience every time.

+ Gritty, thrilling and frantic non-stop action that's the perfect emulation of any of your favorite heist movie scenes (Heat, The Town, Dark Knight etc.)

+ Steep but extremely challenging and rewarding learning curve that requires perfected teamwork. The sense of accomplishment after finishing a particularly tough heist is incredibly satisfying.

+ 3 very noticeable levels of difficulty. Normal, Hard and Overkill.

+ Absolutely brilliant soundtrack score by composer Simon Viklund. The music is a perfect distorted electronic combination of breaks, drums, guitars, synth and pulse-pounding beats. I can't wait for the official soundtrack to be released as it will be an instant purchase. By far the best score I've heard for a game of this genre for a long time.

+ Amazing dialogue and flawless voice acting on every level, especially by the four main characters. Profanity is handled perfectly and never feels forced. Character dialogue never feels repetitive or gets tiresome.

+ Some of the best co-op gameplay since the Left 4 Dead series.

+ Dedicated development who are feverishly working on DLC to keep us addicted heisters happy.

+ Experience levels and RPG-style upgrades are well designed allowing players of all levels to play together without terribly noticeable effects. Lower reputation players will simply have access to fewer guns, items and other upgrades but it's not a game changer.

+ Devilishly clever opponent AI.

+ Affordable.

Cons <All very minor>

- Storyline is thin and disjointed.

- No anti-aliasing or other advanced graphics options for PC as I believe this is a port from the PS3.

- Currently there are only 6 heists to choose from although more are on the way with DLC.

- Learning curve may be too difficult and frustrating for the average FPS player.

- Map layouts don't change.

- NPC AI can be sketchy and downright frustrating at times.

- Unable to open or close doors. This would be extremely beneficial when you have to hunker down and survive police assault waves.

- Mousewheel doesn't allow you to switch between weapons (at least not that I've figured out).

- All NPC's can roll, tumble, slide and climb over ledges but the player cannot.

- Smoke bombs are the only deterrents the police use at the moment. I would really like to see more, especially flashbangs that would blind you temporarily and tear gas which would make your vision blurry and eyes water.

- When an out of game player joins a game in play it freezes the current game for all players for approximately 10-20 seconds depending on the new player's connection.

- Could use more guns (also coming in the DLC)

- Primary and Secondary weapon choices are locked in their own trees. It would be nice to choose the Locomotive Shotgun and Compact-5 at the same time for example to work on achievements, rather than only being able to choose one or the other. I don't think this would be a game imbalance.

- Some clipping issues where enemies can take you down between floors and walls without seeing you can be frustrating.

Payday: The Heist is easily one of the best games I've played in years. Its unique premise combined with the random fast-paced gameplay creates a criminal joyride that I've never before experienced in a game. Throwing in the addictive missions and cooperative gameplay and you've got yourself a bona fide hit. The boys at Overkill Software deserve huge accolades for creating a game that brings to life the things one could only dream about doing in real life. Despite some minor technical issues, Payday: The Heist is a masterful co-op crime spree that no one should miss out on. 5 stars, more if I could!

It's a excellent game, the co op is awesome, have a limited option of maps (enought to don't get bored from them) an all the maps are dynamic so every time you play a map you will need to do different things to complete it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun game let down by lack of people playing, March 31, 2013
Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
It is quite a fun game with decent gameplay and visuals. The missions are quite open and can be tackled any way, but at times felt like it was a repetitive "Survival mode" game.

The main negative is that the multiplayer with matchmaking is pretty lacking, with very few servers or people online.

Otherwise, with co-op with friends, it can be very exciting and intense.

7/10, would pay up to $5 for it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Most addicting FPS I've ever played, May 4, 2012
This review is from: PAYDAY The Heist [Download] (Software Download)
I began to play this on PS3 with some friends, however I very much dislike the input lag I experience when playing shooters on the PS3, so I was excited when I saw this game for PC. Ever since I've been hooked, it's fast-paced, challenging, and requires at least some level of teamwork. Easily the best game I've bought for under $50.
