Product Description

This compact, lightweight and affordable Sony α (Alpha) 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens beautifully captures both family events and mid-range or distant subjects -- with minimum focusing to 4-1/2 feet (1.4m), ED Glass to eliminate color distortion, and sharpness that benefits from the Super SteadyShot® image stabilization built into every Sony (Alpha) system DSLR.

DT 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 SAM Zoom Lens

Super-value Sony α (Alpha) SAL-55300 telephoto zoom. This compact, lightweight 55-300mm f4.5-5.6 Telephoto Zoom Lens covers the medium to long-distance telephoto range families use most often, with close 4-1/2 foot (1.4m) minimum focusing distance for all-around utility - plus ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass to virtually eliminate color distortion (35mm equivalent: 82.5-450mm).

DT 55-300mm F4.5-5.6 SAM Zoom Lens

Technology

Circular Aperture
ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass
Distance encoder

Circular Aperture

When changing your aperture to defocus the background, the light sources appear blurred. This ‘bokeh’ effect of the blurred background can be enhanced with circular aperture blades used in this lens. Conventional aperture blades have flat sides creating unappealing polygonal shaped defocussed points of light. α lenses overcome this problem through a unique design that keeps the aperture almost perfectly circular from its wide-open setting to when it is closed by 2 stops. Smoother, more natural defocusing can be obtained as a result.

ED (Extra-low Dispersion) glass

As focal lengths get longer, lenses built with conventional optical glass have difficulties with chromatic aberration, and as a result images suffer from lower contrast, lower color quality, and lower resolution. ED glass dramatically reduces chromatic aberration at telephoto ranges, and provides superior contrast across the entire image, even at large aperture settings. Super ED glass provides enhanced compensation for chromatic aberration.

Distance encoder

The distance encoder plays an integral part in ADI flash metering, which delivers high precision flash metering that is unaffected by the reflectance of subjects or backgrounds. The distance encoder is a lens component that directly detects the position of the focusing mechanism, and sends a signal to the CPU in order to measure distance to the subject. During flash photography, this data is very useful in calculating how much flash output is appropriate to the scene.

SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor)

SAM (Smooth Autofocus Motor)

Rather than using the focus drive motor in the camera body, SAM lenses feature an autofocus motor built into to the lens itself that directly drives the focusing element group. Since the built-in motor directly rotates the focus mechanism, operation is significantly smoother and quieter than conventional coupled autofocus drive systems.

This lens works well with my Sony NEX 7. Requires the intermediate adapter to fit. Definition holds reasonable well thru the zoom range with some degrading at full zoom. I recommend it for images requiring about half its zoom range, useable to the full zoom with a reasonable amount of sharpening and definition enhancement in post processing. All in all a good lens worth the price and is certainly convenient. A bit noisy when focusing

I was very impressed with the quality of pictures this lens takes. Even shooting at 300mm focal length, the pictures were very crisp and detailed. It helps that I am shooting with an A77 that has in-body stabilization. I did find that the lens could be a little slow to focus sometimes, and would sometimes fail to focus on things like the sky. I give it 5 stars because the price to performance ratio probably cannot be beat in this segment.

I'd been wanting to try this lens for a while as I have quite a decent range of A Mount lenses (around a dozen or so)
One area I don't really have well covered is the telephoto end and at the 300mm mark. Though I've used a fair few of them

On using the lens first off the build is very much like the recent Sony 18-135mm which is quite a good thing as I'm quite fond of that lens. The plastics are of decent quality, it has a metal mount and the top of the lens has the newer Sony metal style black ring on it (just like the 18-135mm)

I've done a bit of shooting with the lens and I'll share my quick fire pro and cons section:

Pros:
+ Decent price (about in line or slightly better than rivals on other mounts)
+ Good overall build quality with respectable plastics, metal mount too quite happy here
+ Optics are across the range from 55mm to 300mm are good usable wide open across the range
+ SAM motor is somewhat quieter than previous ones, but not silent (take note video shooters using the on-board mic) AF speed is ok but not really fast (not unexpected for a tele lens) not as fast as the 18-135mm
+ Vignetting and CA are mostly well controlled really not a serious issue at all here, some CA noted but minor really
+ Comes with a lens hood
+ Zoom lock, which is great (no sign of creep so far but it's useful to have this)
+ Above average max magnification of 1:3.7 (0.

I am very pleased with this lens. I am not a serious photographer but have been taking pix for 50 years with all types of cameras and lenses. Using it on a Sony Alpha A77 it has been just fine. It seems fairly "small" for a 300mm zoom, but the camera is big and it all balances nicely making for pretty good hand held shots.

Twisting the barrel to zoom is not buttery smooth so I gave it 4 stars. It's not stiff, just a bit variable.

It's a good lens for a good price.

I could not be happier with this 55-300mm lens. I am new to Sony (from my Canon 60D) and this is my first lens purchase (after the kit lens). I was worried that low price would equal low quality, but I did need a "starter" zoom for the camera. I don't think I'll be looking for anything more expensive, given how happy I am with this one.
