Arrived promptly and in good packing materials.

Did not include SATA cable, no star off because I knew it didn't before I ordered, just saying order a cable if you do not have another extra one.

Installed on first boot with no CMOS actions. Windows installed correct drivers works fine.

Have burned CD-R/W and DVD R/W with it backing up files at default speeds no problems.

While reading discs it is loud but no louder than any other internal rack mounted disc player I have installed.

Hope this helps somebody else wondering if they should get this? or if it will work? Yes and Yes.

AWESOME! I ordered this nice little DVD burner as a backup to my Pioneer burner for my desktop computer and it came the very next day, unbelievable!. For $20 bucks you really won't find a better DVD burner. It's fast and so far extremely reliable after a few days, this is connected via SATA and is much faster than my old Pioneer which is IDE and cost over $80 four years ago, LOL. I would definitely recommend this Sony DVD burner. I order from Amazon pretty often and have never been let down yet. My orders always show up early or at least on time and have never been damaged. In fact, I have another order which should be here tomorrow, sweet!

You can use a Serial ATA Cable, with Power Adapter, to convert your pre 2009 Mac Pro from the internal IDE optical drive interface to the Serial ATA optical drive interface, which will allow you to use the Sony AD-7280S-0B 24x SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive, or any other SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive in your pre 2009 Mac Pro. This transition is necessary when it comes time to replace your IDE internal optical drive in your pre 2009 Mac Pro because all of the new IDE optical drives are completely depleted from the marketplace.

If you own a 2009-2012 Mac Pro, your computer is already using the Serial ATA optical drive interface and you can replace your drive with a new SATA Internal DVD+/-RW Drive without needing to install Serial ATA Cable, with Power Adapter.

I used the Sony AD-7280S-0B 24x SATA Optical Drives to transition my Mac Pro's optical drive bays from the IDE drive interface to the SATA drive interface.

I purchased two of these Sony Sony AD-7280S-0B drives and two Serial ATA Cables with Power Adapters. My 2007 Mac Pro now is converted from running two spent internal IDE optical drives to running two new internal SATA optical drives. Their Mac OS 10.7.5 Lion Finder-burning works fine on DVD-R and CD-R as well as simultaneous dual burning. The iTunes Audio CD Burning works fine and iDVD 7 works fine with these burners. Apple DVD Player works fine, as well.

I use the slowest burn speed possible when archiving finished customer jobs. The slowest CD-R burn speed is 8x and the slowest DVD-R burn speed is 4x.

The installation of the Serial ATA Cable, with Power Adapter, gave me the opportunity to clean my Mac Pro's front fan assembly.

I'm happy with this drive that performs exactly as advertised and as expected. And I LOVE that it does not have white logos plastered all over the front.

The name is a clue: 'OptiArc' is short for 'optimized for archiving'. Sony has discontinued the product line, so don't expect warranty service, but these drives still do their job very well. There are tradeoffs in designing something for a specific purpose. Don't expect it to be just like every other CD/DVD writer.

Average drives turn out readable discs nearly every time, but in some situations 99% is not good enough. Storing important data for a very long time is a bit more demanding than sending a copy of your vacation pictures to friends. Legal documents and design files need to be readable years later, on different computers. Same goes for user manuals and software on disc which get sent to customers around the world.

To insure reliable discs, this drive has more a more powerful spindle motor and head position servo. These both make above-average noise, but insure that every bit written to the disc is very precisely located. If the drive doesn't trust the quality of the blank discs you use, it will ignore the speed setting you have selected and drop to a slower writing speed. But the discs it kicks out will be readable for decades, and on virtually any machine. Even your fussy video disc player will like them. Just expect some slower writes and more noise.

Bought as a cheap dvd drive for computer build. works fine for price. was surprised only by 2 things. this is a sony product and there is no actually sony logo on the front of the drive or anywhere except on the one sticker on the bottom of the unit, thats unusual for a large corporation like that. not that its a deal breaker just shocked they didn't opt for the free advertising. other than that it runs very well, but gets 4 stars instead of 5 because when it runs, you can hear the jet engine noise from down the hall. thats not a deal breaker for me either but might be for you. if it works it works.

would buy again.
