Product Description

The compact and rugged Sony HDR-AS15 HD Action Camcorder with WiFi is designed for point-of-view (POV) shooting during action sports including skiing, snowboarding, skateboarding, surfing, motocross, skydiving, mountain biking and other outdoor adventure sports. The lightweight, wearable action camcorder weighs only 3.2 oz (90 g) and it supports up to Full HD 1920 x 1080p video recording at 60 fps (with firmware 3.0 or higher). It also supports other shooting modes including a 2x and 4x Slow Motion Video Mode. The 2x Slow Motion Mode supports 1280 x 720p video capture at 60 fps and the 4x Slow Motion Mode supports 1280 x 720p video capture at an amazing 120 fps. Having 120 frames per second to break down video frame-by-frame makes the 4x Slow Motion Mode a valuable tool for both movie making and review of your tricks, line, form and technique.

The Sony HDR-AS15 Action Video Camera is a marvel of compact video technology. Other reviewers have pointed this out, but most folks are interested in the drawbacks not obviously apparent or advertised. I would like to point out a few things that keep this product from being a great buy:

1: WiFi - the HDR-AS15 (vs the HDR-AS10) is advertised as the WiFi version. However, the WiFi only works with the PlayMemories mobile app. You can connect to a Windows 7 PC, but PlayMemories Home will not recognize the HDR-AS15. To transfer files to a PC, you must use the USB cable. Since you can actually connect to the HDR-AS15 WiFi hotspot from a Windows PC, it would seem Sony would have upgraded the PlayMemories software to recognize their own wireless device.

2. File Management - Once you have recorded video files on the camera they are there to stay, unless you reformat the microSD card using the FORMAT function, or remove the microSD card, mount it to a PC and use Windows Explorer to manage files on the microSD card. If you use the FORMAT function, you lose all files. If you connect to the PC via USB and open PlayMemories, you can import files, but you cannot delete them from the camera.

3. Mount - The HDR-AS15 comes with a variety of mounts, but they all must be used with waterproof/dustproof case. You must purchase the headband case (BLT-HB1) to get a less cumbersome mount, but there are no mounting attachments other than the headband; you have to construct your own mounts that will fit the bracket holes on the side of the headband mount.

These drawbacks should be easily remedied. A great start would be a software upgrade of PlayMemories Home for the PC that is truly WiFi and allows file management directly on the camera.

This is a sports/action video camera along the same lines as the GoPro Hero cameras. It does not have wide/zoom functions and does not have a screen to view videos. But it is extremely durable and designed to be used in all sorts of conditions that a regular video camera would not do so well.

It is very light (2 oz without the waterproof case) and the menu system is far more intuitive than the GoPro Hero and less cryptic. Where the GoPro has the advantage is that the setup setting can be done without removing it from the waterproof case, the Sony does not have access to the the buttons while in the case - the only button you have access to is the Start/Stop record button. I am not sure if this is good or not at this point - I'll update later.

The nice part is it is Wi-Fi ready - no need to buy anything else. Sony sells an add-on LCD screen, but I am not sure how useful it would be as you can view your videos instantly via the Wi-Fi connection with your Android or iPhone.

Another point is that the Sony uses a standard tripod mount so adaptors and such can be easily rigged for this. As of the time of this review, GoPro has far more mounting bracket options, so I would not be surprised if someone comes up with some sort of adapter so those mounting brackets can be used on the Sony (or any other standard camera!)

The big boo-hiss is the dumb PlayMemories app for the phones. I really hope Sony takes a good look at this and does some major work to improve it. Either that or someone can come up with a better 3rd party app.

Oh, I also would suggest you purchase it from this vendor - the bundle is well worth it!!!!

GoPro or go home. I was once told that by a professional photographer when I asked which action cam to purchase. I went against his advice and have not had any regrets in doing so! A few items I would like to point out about the Sony HDR Action Cam.

Camera

The Camera itself is quite small and easy to pack into a bag or backpack. The control buttons are fairly self explanatory, and with a little online help (the manual is less than desirable) had a full understanding of the camera's functions in short time. The rear of the camera slides open for battery install. This particular model is the WiFi model. We connect to our iPhone and Android phones with ease. Makes for a nice viewfinder when shooting videos.

Quality

The video quality of this camera is amazing. Colors are bright and images are very vivid. Some have complained about low light situations, but we have had no issues thus far. The sound recording can be muffled when in the protective case, but we solved the problem by purchasing the extra door set ( link below ). The camera shoots great footage underwater.

Case

The waterproof case that comes with the camera is very high quality. We do a series of video blogs and prefer to use this camera over our other gear. Our camera has been through a great deal of wear, and the case has held strong without any scratches or scuffs. We have mounted this camera with a suction cup mount (sold separately) onto the outside of our vehicle, had it underwater shooting gold prospecting videos, as well as other various activities. We did purchase the add on door package ( http://www.amazon.com/Sony-AKA-RD1-Replacement-HDR-AS10-HDR-AS15/dp/B00AW050W6/ref=sr_1_1?
