3.0 out of 5 stars Older is better.
This works much better then the new Sony remote. It has a longer usable range. Is evenly waited, and feels better. If you don't need the all-in-one features that were useless in my two setups, then this is a better remote for you. Still I want a multimedia controller that works, and having an extra device for one item kind of sucks. There forth I only give it a 3 out...

5.0 out of 5 stars I approve this remote control, August 27, 2009
This review is from: Sony Blu-Ray Disk Remote for Sony Playstation 3
I did not think I needed yet another remote control because I thought the six-axis had everything it needed for movie playing on the PS3 and, yet, I bought one. There were 2 initial reasons:

- my wife was missing a 'magic wand' shaped remote for playing movies
- Amazon had it at a great price in one of them lightning deals

I ended up using it myself and, in fact, using it for more than just movie playing - see below.

But, let's do a quick inventory of features:

= It's blue-tooth enabled and, therefore, it's not taking any ports on your PS3. This is probably important for anyone who has a "2-USB ports console".
= It's wand-shaped, allowing the non-gamers to control their movie-watching activities while holding a familiar-shaped device in their hand.
= It maps ALL the six-axis buttons and performs everything a six-axis would do, except for the joystick features of R3 and L3 (but you do have the push-down or 'click' abilities for them).
= Includes additional buttons that the movie-only users would expect on a remote such as:
+ a number pad
+ eject
+ red, green, blue, yellow buttons
+ play, stop, pause
+ slow(step), scan(left/right), prev/next
+ display, top menu, pop up menu, return
+ subtitles, angle, audio
= 2 AA battery powered (still with the original Sony batteries after 4 months of use)

What is interesting about this remote is that you can use it for much more than movie-playing. Given that it has all the six-axis buttons, guess what? You can use it, and I do use it to:

- surf the web
- play music
- shop at the PSN store
- play certain games such as Sudoku
- turn the PS3 on/off when your six-axis controllers are in the charger and I am playing GT5 that is using a racing wheel

And, yes, you CAN turn the PS3 on and off with this remote. Turning it on is easy - you simply press the PlayStation button and the PS3 turns itself on. To turn it off, you either go as far to the left on the X-bar and all the way up and press Enter (the turn-off PlayStation icon will be highlighted) or you simply hold the PlayStation button pressed for a few seconds and then select 'yes' and press the X button a couple of times.

Overall: I am happy with this peripheral. Yes, it's one more remote control but it's a pretty good one, for the reasons I stated above.

5.0 out of 5 stars Perfect for Non-Gamer, March 19, 2011

We just started watching movies on our PS3 and until now I haven't had anything to do with the gaming system. This remote makes much more sense than the game controller for those of us used to DVD remotes!

5.0 out of 5 stars An ESSENTIAL tool if you plan on using your PS3's media capabilities!, September 27, 2011
This review is from: Sony Blu-Ray Disk Remote for Sony Playstation 3
We bought our Playstation 3 and upgraded to an HDTV at the same time. This was a big resolution leap from our previous analog TV and DVD player. I knew when we got the PS3 that I wouldn't be using it for much gaming. I enjoy games like Little Big Planet and the Lego series, but games in that genre are few and far between so I figured I would be using the PS3 more as a media hub than a game console.

The first couple of times we tried watching movies we were navigating through menus with the traditional gaming wireless remote. This proved to be pretty awkward when trying to activate features or change settings. It wasn't an intuitive experience at all. I found this remote on Amazon for about $20 and figured it was worth a shot. I'm so glad we invested in it!

This turns your Playstation 3 into a media hub. There are a ton of buttons, but they are all clearly labeled so it's easier to make your way around the system. This is vital when it comes to watching blu-ray discs, but it also comes in handy when trying to browse through the PS3's numerous other offerings like the Playstation Store, Netflix, Hulu and even our wireless media server.

I use this way more often than the dual-shock remotes. I also like that it takes two double-A batteries since I am terrible at remembering to plug the gaming remotes in before their battery life has completely depleted.

If you plan on taking advantage of the PS3's blu-ray/media capabilities at all, you'd be remiss not to pick one of these up!

The Sony remote it the best PlayStation remote. It is Bluetooth, so you don't have to take up one of your USB spaces with a USB dongle for the aftermarket brands. It also syncs to one specific PlayStation so it won't inadvertently control the other one. I have 2 PS3's in the house and have a remote for each of them. Its great!

4.0 out of 5 stars Its a remote. It works remotely as intended., January 20, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony Blu-Ray Disk Remote for Sony Playstation 3
This remote performs the duty of a remote. I have never pushed a button on this remote and been forced to push a button again because it did not function as intended, unlike my cruddy cable company remote that I have to perpetually push the same buttons on it repeatedly for simple functions. I would have rated this remote a 5 star if it were not because of this one issue. Why did they think they needed every button on this remote to serve the same purpose of turning on the power to my playstation when it was off? It is constantly getting leaned on or some random button is pushed on accident, turning on my playstation in some unwanted fashion. Please, in the future, lets just have one button that turns on my playstaion. Every button does not need to be a power on switch. Thanks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really? $34.95?, September 12, 2011

Seriously, why would you charge $34.95 when you can get it at Best Buy for $24.95? Seems like that's counter productive.

I've received the Sony Blu-Ray Disk Remote for Sony Playstation 3, but unfortunately it doesn't work. I can't return to USA, so I'll have to fix it here on my account.
