Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

The sleekly styled, silver 46-inch Sony Bravia KDL46S2000 is packed with the latest high-performance video features, including a wide viewing angle, blazing fast 8ms response time (great for sports and action movies), and a wide color gamut backlight that provides more natural skin tones and highly accurate overall color reproduction. It also offers integrated HDTV capabilities (with an integrated ATSC tuner), digital HDMI video connectivity, and a bottom speaker design that helps save space. The thin profile of this Bravia TV accommodates VESA compliant mounting systems (separately available). The removable pedestal swivels 30 degrees left and right and also tilts forward 3 degrees and backward 8 degrees for additional placement flexibility.

Like other TVs in the Bravia line, the KDL46S2000 uses Sony's Wide Color Cold Compact Fluorescent Light (WCG-CCFL) to display a color gamut almost 30 percent larger than a conventional CCFL display, which results in deeper reds, more vivid greens, and cleaner blues. It also offers a high response time (also referred to as refresh rate) of 8 milliseconds (ms), which is able to clearly portray fast-moving images across the screen with well-defined edges and without ghosting (streaking or shadowing). The set's Light Sensor feature intelligently adjusts the screen brightness to match the ambient light in a room, ensuring a comfortable viewing experience.

It also features the latest in Sony’s unique S-PVA (Super Patterned Vertical Alignment) LCD panel technology, which divides each sub-pixel into two segments per color for a more refined consistency in colors, contrast, and brightness at wide viewing angles. This seventh generation Sony LCD panel was specially crafted at Sony's plant and produced from one of the world’s biggest mother glass (a huge sheet of glass that can be divided to create multiple LCD panels).

The KDL46S2000 has a 1366 x 768-pixel resolution, 16:9 widescreen aspect ratio, 178-degree viewing angle, and 1300:1 contrast ratio. (The higher the contrast ratio, the greater a TV's ability to display subtle color details and not get washed out by ambient room light.) The Cinemotion 3:2 pulldown cinema video processing detects and compensates film--which is shot at 24 frames per second (fps) compared with video's 30 fps rate--to video for a smooth theaterlike experience at home. The 3D digital comb filter offers 10-bit signal processing that renders superb gradation of grays, resulting in superior picture detail.

Other convenience features include:

  • WEGA GATE Easy Operation Guide allows you to easily navigate to the most convenient TV functions: favorite channels, TV channel list, external input list, or settings.
  • Favorite Channels with the WEGA GATE function, allows you to navigate a list of up to 16 favorite channels without leaving the current channel.
  • Wide Screen Mode allows you to watch 4:3 normal broadcasts in wide screen mode (16:9 aspect ratio).
  • Parental Control (V-Chip) helps parents monitor what their children watch on TV by establishing rating limits.
  • Caption Vision/Info Banner allows closed caption and/or channel programming information to be displayed.
  • The Freeze Function temporarily freezes the picture in a separate screen while the programming continues to display, which can come in handy when you want to copy a recipe, phone number, etc. that flashes too quickly across your screen.
It pumps out 20 watts of audio power via its integrated bottom-aligned stereo speakers (10 watts per channel). It has a built-in Dolby Digital decoder (for connecting to a surround sound home theater receiver) and it can also produce SRS TruSurround XT virtual 5.1-channel surround sound from its two speakers. This set offers the following connection options:
  • Composite (RCA audio/video): 3 inputs (1 on the side)
  • S-Video: 2 inputs (1 on the side)
  • Component (Y/Pb/Pr): 2 inputs (with left/right audio jacks)
  • HDMI: 1 input (with L/R RCA audio connections)
  • PC: 1 D-Sub15 input (with L/R stereo mini plug connection)
  • RF: 1 input
  • Total audio inputs: 5 (1 side, 4 rear)
  • Analog audio output: 1
  • Digital audio ouput: 1
  • Headphone: 1

Tech Talk
HDMI is a lossless, uncompressed, all-digital audio/video interface to link any audio/video source (such as a set-top box, DVD player, or AV receiver) with your TV--all over a single cable. HDMI supports standard, enhanced or high definition video, plus multi-channel digital audio on a single cable. It supports all ATSC formats--standard (SDTV), enhanced (EDTV), and high (HDTV).

Component video (also called Y/Pb/Pr) features a three-jack video input, which provides separate connections for luminance (Y), blue color difference (PB) and red color difference (PR). This results in increased bandwidth for color information, resulting in a more accurate picture with clearer color reproduction and less bleeding than you would get with S-Video or composite (RCA yellow video plug) connections. You will need a separate RCA left/right audio cable for sound.

TruSurround XT audio adds three new audio enhancement technologies to produce an amazingly immersive sound experience.

  • Dialog Clarity brings movie dialog into Focus during the playback of any surround-encoded material to make speech much clearer and crisper.
  • TruBass creates incredible deep rich bass allowing a person to perceive significantly deeper, richer low bass tones that are far beyond the physical low frequency capabilities of the speaker itself.
  • The SRS WOW feature widens the soundstage by processing standard two-channel stereo material as well as multi-channel encoded material for a dramatic improvement in the playback of any stereo audio over a two-speaker system.
And in case you were wondering, BRAVIA is short for "Best Resolution Audio Visual Integrated Architecture."

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Sony LCD TV, made in Japan!, August 19, 2006
This review is from: Sony Bravia KDL-46S2000 46-Inch Flat Panel LCD HDTV (Electronics)
After researching, shopping around, and trying numerous LCD TVs, I decided to go with the Sony KDL46S2000.

Some background on my shopping experience before I go into this TV. I first bought a Phillips 37" LCD from Costco in March for about $1800. It was OK but the picture wasn't that great. I returned it and bought a Sony 40" LCD (KDL40S2000) from Costco for $2350 last month. The picture was significantly better than the Phillips and I was pretty happy with it, except I wished it was a little bigger. Soon afterwards, I noticed that the price of the 46" Sony LCD (KDL46S2000) dropped significantly on Amazon. I waited a couple weeks until the price dropped further and finally bought it for $2550. I can't be happier with my choice.

First of all, the KDL46S2000 is a lot bigger than its 40" sibling. More importantly, the 40" Sony that I bought from Costco was made in Mexico. After the KDL46S2000 arrived from Amazon, I was ecstatic to find out that it was made in Japan! Just that in itself was worth the extra $200 that I paid for it, not to mention the extra 6". It is extremely difficult to buy Sony electronics in the US that are actually made in Japan these days, and I'm really happy that this one is made in Japan. All the other TVs I've looked at, like the Sharp 45", are made in Mexico.

As far as picture quality is concerned, I compared this TV to the Samsung 46" and the Sharp 45" at Circuit City and I liked the Sony the best. Samsung's colors are too strong and I don't like the piano black frame since it reflects like a mirror. Sharp's colors looked better than the Sony but the picture didn't seem as sharp to me.

Comparing connectors, Sharp had the best combination of connectors (2xHDMI, 2xcomponent). Sony only has 1 HDMI and 2 component videos, which is barely enough by today's standards and will probably be a problem in the future. An extra HDMI would have been perfect but at least Sony has a PC input that can be used as component video, especially on gaming consoles like the Xbox 360 (you just need the right cable). Samsung has 2 HDMI but only 1 component video, which is not any better.

The Sony remote was a little disappointing since my old Wega Trinitron has a better looking remote, but I guess most LCD remotes look pretty bad anyway. Still, Sony could have made it look better. At least its functionality is very intuitive.

Another weakness on this TV is that you can't change aspect ratio (the wide display options) when displaying HD signals from the HDMI. I'm not sure if you can do this on the Sharp or the Samsung.

In conclusion, the KDL46S2000 is not perfect, but I think at $2550, it's the best buy out there right now. The fact that it is made in Japan just makes it that much better. Sony is coming out with the KDL46V2500 next month, which offers full HD (1080p) and has 2 HDMI inputs with pretty the same looks as this TV. On paper, the KDL46V2500 is a lot more "perfect" than the KDL46S2000, but will likely costs at least $1000 more than the KDL46S2000. Sony already has the KDLXBR2 out, which costs even more. So if money is not an issue, I would go for one of the new full HD models. For me, I think the KDL46S2000 is perfect at $2550. In a few years, I'll get a bigger full HD model and put this one in my bedroom.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great TV, must shop around for price, June 12, 2006
By
This review is from: Sony Bravia KDL-46S2000 46-Inch Flat Panel LCD HDTV (Electronics)
[...]. I am extremely pleased.

I previously owned a Sony projection CRT, and was debating between a plasma, flat-panel LCD, or a projection DLP/LCD. After eliminating the projection TV's due to decreased viewing angles and size, I was down to the LCD and plasma. In the end, I felt that LCD had better picture quality (or at least as good) and it was brighter. Its difficult to find a larger size, however Sony recently came out with this 46" size (as did Samsung). Other pro's are that there is no burn-in risk, longer lifespan, and best of all- there is no glare. Plasma TV's have horrible glare issues in brighter rooms, or rooms with lamps, etc. LCD's virtually eliminate this effect, so the picture is always clear and bright.

As for the cons, this Sony does not have PIP. This is disappointing after paying nearly $3k for a TV. Also, the level of blackness that Plasma TV promoters will tell you an LCD lacks is somewhat true. While the black levels are not as dark, they are much improved over LCD TV's of a year ago, and do not take away from the "movie experience" at all in my opinion.

Bottom Line: After much research, you can't buy a better TV in this price range.

5.0 out of 5 stars A great LCD TV, June 20, 2006

This is replacing a faulty plasma set I had. It took a bit of playing with the settings in the menu but the picture quality is just about as good as the plasma was. It's a great trade off for me to not have to worry about burn-in.

DirecTV HD channels look great as well as all of the OTA locals. SD channels look ok (just as good as the old plasma). Xbox 360 looks fantastic! There's no lag or ghosting with any of the games I have played.

I can't comment on the sound quality because I have it hooked up to my 5.1 digital surround sound system.

I would reccomend this TV anyone. It's a great LCD HDTV that rivals the picture quality of a plasma.
