"No Disc", my bum!,
By Kat G "kattty" (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony CFD-E95 PSYC Boombox (Red) (Electronics)
I asked for a small boombox for Christmas of last year for my bedroom because my main system is in the living room and I listen to music constantly. I used to have a Sony boombox that I had to junk when I moved because it was too bulky, but something like 10 years later it STILL WORKED! At any rate, I thought that this would be a good buy - cute, compact, still loud and Sony. That being said, I got this one for Christmas.A few weeks ago (conveniently right when the "labor" part of the warranty ran out), the damn thing just STOPS playing CDs. So I thought, gee, maybe it's my CDs because they're scratched. Nope! I put A BRAND NEW CD in there and it still gave me that whole "No Disc" nonsense. One of the appeals of this thing is that it's also supposed to play CD-Rs as well, which some older systems have a hard time doing. Well truth be told, that is neither here nor there since it doesn't play ANYTHING. The only thing that works is the radio and the sleep timer. I'm just annoyed because what on earth is the point of having a CD player boombox if it can't play CDs!??! I expect more, a lot more, from Sony and am extremely disappointed. I have to bring it in to be repaired, so that should be fun. (UGH!)

A totally defective product on the CD part,

After less than four months, the CD player failed by displaying the infamous "NO DISC" message. Sony should recall this product. Don't buy it! Its functionality is nothing close to its look. This is the second Sony product (the first one being a 32" TV) that has failed shortly after I bought it.
The better part of this deal was, when I called Sony customer service, I was told that I could send it for repair for $83 and they will cover the parts cost. And I was assured that it was not a joke!

I don't recommend this device because the controls aren't well
designed and of course there is the "no disc" problem. However I got mine to to play CDs by plugging it into AC power instead of running it on batteries. I think maybe the batteries were too weak to power the laser.

I bought this in June 2003. In August it stopped playing cds. Luckily my warranty covered fixing the repair. However, upon return I noticed scratches on the unit. When I called to complain, they said that the unit came into them as "Fair". Considering I got the unit 6 weeks earlier and it has been on my desk the whole time, I would not considered it "fair". Whatever! This month, November, the antennae literally just fell off. Mind you, I usually listen to cds so I don't touch the antennae. Sadly, the warranty does not cover the repair. The unit seems to me to be very fragile. Not a unit I can recommend.

Not as bad as all these jerks are saying.,

This a good boombox. The only problems I have with it though is that you have to use a remote to skip the cd. I use this manly to record cds on to tapes and it does that with no problems. I have had this boombox for a year now and it has not broken down on me.

Bad design choices,
This review is from: Sony CFD-E95 PSYC Boombox (Red) (Electronics)
CD player is adequate; the cassette deck positioning & controls are counter-intuitive but functional; but the really annoying & unnecessary feature here is the never-ending unstoppable color-changing "HELLO HELLO O HELL" wrap-around flashing LCD display, which can only be shut down by unplugging the power. Some designer must have thought this display would look good in the showroom, but retailers know that if they ever turned these things on, no one would buy them - therefore purchasers don't see this useless & distracting waste of power until they get the thing home & regret buying it.

I have one of these no disc problems,
This review is from: Sony CFD-E95 PSYC Boombox (Blue) (Electronics)
I have had many cd players that gave me no disc problems and the problem is that your lens is dirty. To fix the problem get a cotton swab dip it in alcohol that you buy at the drugstore and clean the lens is a spinning motion with the cotton swab.
The lens is a hard plastic or maybe even glass so a cotton swab wont scratch it up.I have to do this about twice a year.

Great sound, but after 2 months, the CD Player dies on you(I'm not the only one). Spend a few extra bucks and get different boombox.

One stupid "feature" ruined the product for us,
This review is from: Sony CFD-E95 PSYC Boombox (Blue) (Electronics)
We got this to play tapes for our babies because it looks reasonably appropriate in their nursery yet has decent sound quality unlike typical tape players for babies.
Unfortunately it has this annoying bright flashing display that comes on at random times when the unit is turned off, e.g. at night when the babies are supposed to be sleeping. I'd imagine people of any age would be bothered by this light flashing in their bedroom every night. It flashes random colors for several seconds then the word "...HELLO." scrolls across the display. When it gets to the end it wraps around and for an instant it says "O....HELL" which is exactly what I'm thinking: "oh hell, the idiotic radio is flashing again; I better unplug the piece of junk before it wakes the kids". IMO, a product that you have to remember to unplug after every use is unacceptable. -Bill P.S. Product developers everywhere take note: You have to wonder why Sony added this "hidden feature". Presumably it's to make the product stand out while on display in a store (but my kids' room at 2am is not a store) and to call attention to a useless "advertised feature" of this boombox: the display can light up in different colors (I guess it can be red when you're playing a CD and green for the radio and orange for tapes or something like that). Oh boy. My guess is Sony had a perfectly good boombox design on the drawing board, then some over-eager engineer came along and said "we can get red/green/orange LEDs for only 5 cents more than plain red ones" and it all went downhill from there. A plea to engineers everywhere: don't add useless features just for the sake of adding features. You may think you're showing off but you're just being an idiot. This could've been a good product.

I feel so betrayed....,
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony CFD-E95 PSYC Boombox (White) (Electronics)
I purchased this product believing that SONY is a brand to be trusted. Unfortunately, just as many people have written in their reviews, after three months it stopped playing CDs.I spoke with Sony's customer service, but the only response that they could come up with was "There seems to be a condensation problem. Keep the cover to the CD player open for about 30 minutes, and try playing the CD after that." Of course, even after following their instructions, the CD player still displays "No Disc." It is winter and the air is as dry as it gets. I don't understand how there can be condensation in my unit. And, even if there is a so-called "condensation problem," shouldn't Sony design their products to be fully functional under regular household use? It is a CONSUMER electronics product, not some delicate piece of high-tech machinery that needs to be operated in a clean room. The same "NO DISC" malfunction is being reported by so many people. There must be something wrong with the product design or to its manufacturing process. I can't comment about other Sony products, but this product definitely is of questionable quality. What a disgrace to the SONY brand. |
