I am a teenager who insists on records for home use, cassettes for portability. That being said, upon finding this boombox and using it for a day, and it looks promising. I bought it at Target to replace a Sony CFD-E75 from the late 1990s (admittedly a more upscale boombox) and this one holds its own. I have never had trouble with a Sony. Responding to another reviewer, the STEREO/MONO function does have a purpose; stereo FM reception is more sensitive than mono, so when a station is distorted, setting it to MONO can completely eliminate the fuzz, or at least improve it significantly. Trust me, this button IS useful. I took off a star mainly because of a few minor details, but it does a good job. The bass is a little lacking, but it is by no means intolerable. Just be sure the MegaBass is on. Perhaps hooking it up to PC speakers or a stereo amplifier would make it sound a little fuller. A good use would be on a desk, a medium-sized room, or in the kitchen/garage. The CD player works fine, as does the cassette player and radio. One area to note is that the cassette does NOT automatically stop when fast-forwarding or rewinding, although it does play to a stop. Unlike the CFD-E75, it does not automatically switch functions (for example, you must press <CD> to listen to a CD, whereas some will automatically switch to the CD player when is pressed) and does not have a remote, although you lazy people know you really don't need one. The cassette records wonderfully. It gives a good clear sound, and my full-size tape deck shows that its recording levels are set at a good maximum level for best quality. It also comes with a replaceable cord, so if you either damage it or lose it, just get a new one at RadioShack. A good boombox for a good price.

It seems that this little stereo has gotten a lot of flack and I'm not sure why. I've been really happy with it, and so has my co-worker (who also has her own). It's not an expensive unit, so of course the sound is not going to be absolutely phenomenal, but it's perfectly good. It's a compact size, which was what I needed due to the size of my child's nursery (where we use it). I did a lot of research before buying this and it was hard to find something this small that had all of the features and sound quality, without spending a lot more money. My favorite feature is the sleep timer, so it automatically turns off at the time I set it for. As for how it reads CDs, I'm not sure why reviews say it doesn't take burned discs, because mine easily does. I haven't had any problems with it not reading anything. Last, but not least, this unit has an attractive/simple design. Once again, for the money (it was on sale for $40), you can't go wrong with this item.

I work at home and have a boom box on my desk to listen to the radio, CD's, and the occasional cassette. I spend at least eight hours a day here, so what I listen to is very important to me. About once every five years, my old boom box dies (in this case, the CD player stopped working). Because of the switch to mp3's, there isn't as much choice out there as there used to be for an AM FM, cassette, CD unit. Last week, I purchased the CFD-OS1, and it is better than the five year old Philips unit it replaced. I've tried every feature on it and they all work great. It looks great, takes up very little space on my desk, delivers great AM FM reception to my house in San Francisco, and has a bright cheerful sound. Of course it doesn't boom out bass, it's not supposed to. As long as you understand what this unit is supposed to do, you will be extremely happy with it. I thought maybe I might decide to get a Bose desk unit this time, but I decided to save the extra $450 for something else. This was a great $50 investment.

Sony has packed a lot into a very small and inexpensive package in the CFD-S01. It has full digital tuning and volume control with memory. The FM sensitivity is very good and the sound is clear and sharp. True, it doesn't have a lot of bass, but then it is a light-weight portable. Producing a lot of bass takes a lot of power and drains battery life. So it is a decision you have to make: do you want lots of bass or long battery life? You can't have both. This little portable will last all week on a set of batteries and it sounds great!

A basic digital tuner, CD player, tape cassette player/recorder boombox. There are no treble/bass controls, just a Mega Bass button that doesn't make much difference. Has a useless Mode button to switch from stereo to mono (why?). Has a headphone jack but no other output ports. Sound quality is not impressive, with or without the Mega Bass.

It does have a nice Sleep button with preset shut-off intervals of 10, 20, 30, 60, 90 or 120 minutes. It can play CD-R's and CD-RW's but other than that, it's a simple, no-frills, no-thrills boombox.

I just did a blindfolded comparison between this (friend had it, bought on sale at Target for $30) and the much-lauded sony cfd-e100 - which I just ordered from amazon and am going to have to return! - and there's NO question this is the better player. It won the Bach, Beck, and Bob (Dylan) tests hands down. This one has a clearer, bigger, not-at-all tinny sound for different kinds of music. I may still take my chances with the sony cfd -350, but I may just get this one. It's a perfectly good player, seems sturdy and isn't too ugly or unwieldy (and my friend's has been alive for a while now). Don't listen to the negative reviews! It deserves its five stars because the other doesn't deserve ITS stars, and because it will not disappoint for the cost.

Good machine for the price. Sounds very good and as a matter of fact, when checking the sound against a home theater system or a higher priced player, we found it to be fairly close in quality of the sound (no hissing, background music was heard, various instruments could be heard, etc.)

Perfect for what I want it for.........my sewing, computer,relaxing room......also great on the deck in warm weather. It could have a deeper bass sound but for what it costs, it does the job.

I bought my Sony CD player/cassette/radio at Sears for $49.99. It is a good buy. The CD plays fine and the digital radio tuner makes it much easier to locate the station you are looking for. It is excellent for recording from the radio or CD player to cassette tape. It is quite sturdy and the instruction manual is complete and easy to understand. The only drawback is that it does not have a built-in microphone and so can only record from its own radio or CD player. But for that, I would have given it 5 stars. All in all, it is an excellent buy for the money.

I have purchased 2 of these to play CDs in the kids room at night. They love it! I like the REPEAT ALL and 10, 20, 30, 60, 90, 120min self timer functions. As for sound quality... this is an entry-level player, hence the model number 01. It is not really a hi-fi stereo system. Now, that said, for what it is it does have a nice sound. It would also be very suitable for playing loud in a construction work environment. It is a Sony but it is not audiophile.

They have worked flawlessly for us since late in 2007 and are still working fine. I recommend this product for what it is. Good sound but not hi-fi.
