Suprisingly good,

This review is from: Sony CMT-NE3 Desktop Microsystem (Electronics)
I've purchased two of these systems as gifts, and I've been pretty happy with the feedback from the recipients. I've heard them in the home setting, and they sound quite nice for the size (and price).
I gave one to my girlfriend, and I hooked it up so that her DVD player in her bedroom runs through it. Works just great. Easy to hook up, and perfect for a small room.
I've been really happy with this model. I'd purchase one for myself if I needed something for the office or a small room.
The appearance of the system is very good, compared to others in this price range.
Recommended.

I wanted a separate speakers, bookshelf system with a good sound that had the smallest footprint possible. This Sony looked promising, but I was made somewhat apprehensive by the one very negative consumer review I came across; however I found 14 more consumer reviews at another website which were mostly positive.
I took a classical music sampler CD to a local store and, amid the din of other blaring units, gave it a listen. Although the bass and treble controls didn't seem to change the sound a great deal, I heard a surprisingly nice output, with crispness and enough separation to convince me it would be worth the $90 price. I have had the unit for a few weeks now and will say it was a bargain indeed. Mind you, I do not crank up the volume and don't require a floor thumping bass, but do enjoy the rich sound this little unit puts out. I listen mostly to an FM classical music station and the reception is fine. I am not getting as many clear stations as I might like, but believe this has much more to do with my location than any fault of the unit. The sound from CDs is excellent. My one gripe is that some of the text ("Preset," "Auto," etc.) on the screen is so small I can't read it from my seat 10' away. But this is a very minor irritation - and I highly recommend the Sony CMT-NE3.

I put a CD of mine that I brought in from home and basically took some time out to ajust the bass and treble which each go from -3 to 3. I had the impression that there was a graphic equalizer on it with 4 settings, but I couldnt find it. I did however find a some sort of bass enhancement switch or something which added an interesting sound when it was on, although it sounded good off as well. The sound was nice for that price range but the projection was a bit soft for a larger room I would think. My opinion, I would definetly think of using it in a smaller bedroom or other small spot or listen to it at closer a range situation.

Reached the warranty period and died,

I was initially very happy with this machine and others I've bought from Sony: good quality sound, excellent price, full set of features without being too complicated. After six months, CD's started skipping occasionally for no apparent reason (which I attributed to the disks). After twelve months, the radio simply refused to receive any stations and CD's are more likely to skip to the end of the disk then they are to play, even the machine's "favorite" disks. Very disappointed with the reliability. I've had better luck with $50 boomboxes. I aim to replace it with a product from another manufacturer.

I bought this for my office. I wanted a good sound at low volumes and with a small footprint because it has to sit on my desk. It's perfect. Everything sounds great on it, from NPR to blues guitar to Bach cantatas to Cake. I use the radio about half the time and the CD player the other half. The one small gripe I have is that the clock only displays if you explicitly press the clock mode button. But I can live without that. It's really made my work hours better.

I bought this for my kitchen, replacing a portable CD player. I absolutely love it. The sound it great. There's a little static with the radio, but I'm still working out the bugs. I'm considering buying one for my son for his birthday.

Hard to find a micro system that plays cassettes these days. This Sony system does the job and looks good too.

Died after around 4 years,
This review is from: Sony CMT-NE3 Desktop Microsystem (Electronics)
I bought the radio in late 2004 or early 2005 to replace an old boombox on which the cassette and CD did not work. It worked fine until the last few months when the back of the unit started getting hot even though it was off and the only way to get it to cool down was to unplug it and it would only stay cool after plugging it back in was not to use it. I had dusted it out with canned air and it still got hot but it still worked until when it died for good. Nothing worked on it even the LED that glows when it is off didn't glow or even flash an error code (Some Sonys do that to tell you that somethings wrong, I learned that from the internet) and there was no --:-- on the LCD screen. Me and my dad are going to try to figure out whats wrong so I can do CD to Cassette recording as I already got the parts to build a custom system which is got more features than this one.

I bought this little compact system for a vacation rental property I manage. It has held up well and continues to work well after nearly two years of usage by various rentors. Sound is good and functionality is easy to figure out, even for the techno-phobe.
