3.0 out of 5 stars Good but expensive
I bought a Mylo Com-2 predominantly for Skype calling from wi-fi (802.11b/g) hotspots. My impression of the unit was that it was well put together and the software was easy to use. I'll cut to the chase on what I didn't like: (1) the Skype functionality can't be used in hands-free mode - a big no-no for me since I like to communicate whilst having hands free. It's a...

I have been using this sony mylo com-2 for a couple days. Let me start by saying that i feel alot of the reviews that are negative about this device are wrong. I use the sony mylo 2 to make skype calls and read and respond to emails also i use it to watch youtube videos. The skype application works great very good call quality and if your listening to music or surfing the web and a call comes in a skype screen comes up and you can answer the call.Email function is great and you can add photo attachements and view photo attachments.Web surfing is really fast but you have to turn off the power save feature(tools then network settings then click on advanced and uncheck the box that says power save) and if you do that the youtube videos are smooth and the surfing might be faster.
some of the reviews complained about the memory problem with multi tasking on the sony mylo com-2 if you are running three applications at the same time you can get this memory error screen and you have to shut down one of the apps. alot of pocket pc's have this memory problem i own the Dell Axim X51v and even though the dell goes for $455 you encounter the same problem and have to shut down apps.
I love the sony mylo-2 so far so good...

4.0 out of 5 stars A personal comunicator, not a computer., March 12, 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The mylo COM2 is great, I had the first one and didn't like it so much, but made use of it anyway. I think this thing is great, it works all IM clients well and you can go on the net and actually upload stuff. The keyboard is backlit so it's always easy to work that, it's touch screen and easy to navigate. Websites load pretty fast for a handheld and you can scroll 3 different ways. You may not be able to have every one of the applications open but, it's NOT a computer, it's a personal communicator. Just wanted to mention that since some have that confused.

(REAL NAME)
I bought a Mylo Com-2 predominantly for Skype calling from wi-fi (802.11b/g) hotspots. My impression of the unit was that it was well put together and the software was easy to use. I'll cut to the chase on what I didn't like: (1) the Skype functionality can't be used in hands-free mode - a big no-no for me since I like to communicate whilst having hands free. It's a shame because the music player works through the speaker - I guess it's a firmware patch thing. (2) the fact that you have to use Sony's proprietary memory sticks. Wake up Sony. The world now uses SDCards. You lost the race! (3) The price. At $299 USD it's way over priced. If you consider that a Blackberry with Skype costs ~$200 and you get a relatively cheap data-plan from a cell phone carrier you're going to have similar costs plus you have a cell phone and the other MP3 capabilities etc. (4) the proprietary microphone attachment. Admittedly they have improved this model by having a standard headphone socket.

So being fair, the product is actually well designed and the concept is good. you get AIM/YIM, Facebook, Myspace and web access without the use of a laptop (which you could probably get for a similar price used). You also get a 1.3Mpixel Camera. It's aimed at the Social-Network generation. It has the standard very good Sony 'out of the box experience'. It's a shame that it's so late and I feel that it has missed the market window. However I see that the product is aimed at children, so it may be appropriate. The question you have to ask yourself is: Do you really want to spend ~$300 on a toy that has limited use ? Why not buy a cheap cell phone and a family cell phone plan (lot's of cell phones have IM/MP3 and web/email access and Facebook/Gmail plug-ins for free - heck the iPhone has all of the above and it's really cool with an 8Gb MP3 player default [for ~$400]!. With that you can keep in contact with your kids any time and they can call 911 or emergency services if needed !! (This is a big deal for most parents I know). My money would go with the Cell Phone Plan.

The reason for a 3 star rating is that the product is well designed and functions very well at what it was designed to do. I just wish it had a cell phone built in (which would be a killer product!). I just can't justify the cost of something like this. For $100 maybe. An expensive handset otherwise. Yes, Sony is probably using the argument that you will get free communications and you are cell-phone plan free. Guess what, you're also tied into wi-fi hot-spots (which is not everywhere!). That compromise doesn't justify the cost.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's really good, March 9, 2008
This product is actually really good. I got one for myself( white one) and another one for my fiance ( black one). They look very nice and everything else works great. The only problem I see is that you can't buy internet for this. And the hotspots are not that good, you can't use it on the bus or the car or the train... only where there is free access to internet and that gets me upset.

4.0 out of 5 stars Works Great, December 3, 2008
I bought this device primarily for using the Skype client while travelling overseas. It works GREAT! The sound quality is great and I've never had a problem connecting to any hotel wireless network. I also purchased a D-Link travel router (about $70) to use at hotels where only wired internet is available through an ethernet cable, and have not had any problems with that either. I read some of these negative reviews and it appears that some people bought the Mylo thinking it would do things that it didn't claim to do. It is NOT a cell phone, it is NOT a computer, although it is reasonably capable of browsing the internet. You DO have to have a wireless internet signal to use this on the internet. I've put movies on it to watch and music to listen to, and have been overall very happy with my Mylo 2.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT DEVICE!!! FREEE IS KEY!!!!, July 2, 2009

LOVEKISS1 (New York, NY) - See all my reviews
I have been using the sony mylo COM 2 for over a year now. There are so many great things to say about this beloved device of mine. It has held up pretty well. People can try to compare this to other communication devices out there but the bottom line is that communicating with this device is free. There are no contracts that you have to pay for like the others. Now let's get into details about the COM 2. I did post my review on CNET as well. It has everything that I need to stay in touch or communicate. The Skype feature allows you to make free calls nationally and internationally as well thus omitting the need for a cellphone. With AIM, I'm able to send instant messages at anytime. It has an okay battery life I'd say 5 hrs without AC. I love the text editor, I can record my thoughts and journal. You can synchronize this with your pc, upload docs, music, vids. Has widgets for facebook, youtube, google and a couple others. The only downside I'd say is that if you live in a rural area, wifi accessibility may not be great. This is a communicating device and I think it gives 100% as far as that goes plus more (being able to watch videos, listen to music, taking pics, creating videos, playing games). Perhaps the folk who gave it a bad review did not spend time with their mylo and truly didn't understand how it works. Mylo will do you well...GO GET IT!!! You know you dig it!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Adequate personal communicator, February 18, 2009
This is a great little communicator... THIS IS NOT A COMPUTER!!!

With that in mind, I purchased it for it's tiny footprint that can connect to wifi for use with SKYPE. It does a pretty good job of that. The screen resolution is phenomenal. Now, with that said, if I would have paid full price, I would feel a bit taken. I purchased it on the sony site under the refurbished section for $150.

1. It is a decent little camera... Just 1.3mp, but decent
2. It is a decent little video camera... Just 1.3mp, but decent
3. It is great for using with facebook...
4. It works great with SKYPE... (neither the touch nor the G1 can compare on this one).
5. It is good with AIM, Yahoo! Messenger and Google Talk...
6. It has some limited games...
7. It is good for viewing photos (very high resolution screen) at a 1000 pixel limit. Much nicer than my old Ipod
8. Is reasonable for listening to music, but I have an older model Ipod that I am very used to and don't really use this feature.
9. Haven't gotten the Rss/Podcast feature to work... but again, my old Ipod has me very spoiled on this.
10. The web browser SUCKS! Don't know where they got the browser from, but it is very selective on what it browses, in other words, it's pretty much unuseable. You cannot check web-based email...
11. I can't seem to watch anything video related... Really haven't tried that hard, due to the size of the device. I also have an older video Ipod, and don't watch video on it's small screen either...

All in all, mainly because of SKYPE, I'm generally happy with the device. I still carry my cell phone, and my older 80GB Ipod... I was using an Asus netbook before for my SKYPE, and the MYLO is more convenient...

Fits my uses... You need to decide what your uses are before you purchase it.

5.0 out of 5 stars It's terrific., January 24, 2009
I have both an Ipod and the Mylo 2. The Ipod touch doesn't have a keyboard, sound video and photo camera, an owner replaceable battery, expandable memory, a built-in speaker and an included AC adapter. It does play MP3s, unlike what previous reviews say, and sounds terrific. There are lots of other features, too. By the way, windows has had all the basic features in a small device for years while apple has slowly introduced what windows has had, by coming out with a new model with a feature windows has already had and getting people to buy them. Since 2003 pocket pcs have had video, word processing, internet, built in speakers, and many other features that apple still doesn't have.
