5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 1024 x 768 progessive HD display. Be aware of potential DVI-HDMI issues..., June 22, 2006

This review is from: Sony CPFM-42X1/B 42IN XGA 1024X768 BLACK PLASMA (Electronics)
An excellent 1024 x 768 progessive HD display.

Fortunately, it does not come with a Dukes of Hazard DVD.

I'm using the S-Video input for our Sony Tivo and VCR, component video from a Sony 5-disc DVD changer into the RGB/YUV input, and HDMI digital video from a Sony 400 disc DVD changer into the DVI-D input.

Picture quality is superb, and the monitor upscales all sources nicely.

There is also a Control S input and output on the monitor, a pair of BNC connectors for composite video in/out, as well as audio inputs for each video input (DVI-D, RGB/YUV, and S-Video/composite), and a single audio output. All of the connectors are located side by side along the bottom of the rear of the monitor. The composite input, S-Video input, and audio input for S-Video/composite are located on a removable adapter card (supplied with the monitor).

I don't use the for composite video or any audio features. (Speakers are an optional add-on for this model).

Note that like most plasma monitors, the PFM-42X1/B does not come with a stand. There are several option available to you, I settled on the PSS Swivel Table Stand from Chief Manufacturing.

Be aware of potential HDMI to DVI-D issues with this monitor:

Although the monitor is equipped with an HDCP compliant DVI-D input, when you connect a Sony DVD player as an HDMI source (in this case a Sony DVP-CX995V DVD changer) using a single HDMI>DVI cable (no other intermediate devices), the player will only output 640p. The DVD player is capable of outputting upscaled high definition video from a regular DVD as either 720p or 1080i on the HDMI connector. No matter what settings I try on the player, it refuses to output anything other than 640p.

I have called Sony for support on both the monitor and the DVD player, with no fix for the problem.

So, presumably, unless Sony come out with an HDMI input adapter card for the PFM series, I'm out of luck !

What concerns me is that all of the new Sony consumer video devices have HDMI for high-definition output, and presumably they won't work with DVI-D either...
