5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent CD-R for the money.!
I just purchased this Sony CD-R for my Dell system. Easy Installation, Fast and easy to use for burning. I have copied and burned many MP3's, music CD's and software with no problems. Software is stripped down, but does the job. I'm not sure how much more software you would need to burn CD's. Just a note..... 95% of the problems are caused from the person behind the...

1.0 out of 5 stars Software Doesn't Work - Sony won't respond to email
I am sorry I got this item. The software doesn't work. (It won't burn 80 minute CD's) I downloaded the new version of the software and new drivers - they still didn't work but they did almost wreck my computer. I emailed Sony - No Response. So now I have to spend another hundred bucks on software that works (Adaptec), but I've heard even that software doesn't like this...

I have had my Sony Spressa CD-RW for about 6 months now, and it is one of the best investments I have ever made. I build computers, but this is one of the easiest installs I have ever experienced. You are literally up and running 10 minutes after you rip open the box! (depending on the make of your computer of course.) It runs quietly, and is accompanied by a very user-friendly software package for all your cd burning needs. I have had absolutely no errors, and all my CDs end up with a professional-like result. I wish that I had the chance to purchase it at the price it is at now, but I feel it was worth every penny! I love this drive so much, I pushed my brother and co-worker to buy one as well, and I installed it for them, (in minutes!) and they love theirs as well. Especially at the price it is being offered at now, I emplore you to buy this drive if you are in the market for one. It is worth it, and I am confident that you won't regret it. I have owned Adaptec and HP CD-RW drives that can't touch this one in reliability and quality! YOU WILL LOVE THIS PRODUCT!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great, have never had problem with it., June 2, 2001

This review is from: Sony CRX140E/CH2 8x4x32 Internal EIDE CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
I have this CDR-W and I have burned hundreds of CD's with it and I have never had a single problem with it. Yes, the software isn't that good compared to Easy CD Creator, but I've noticed that Easy CD creator has problems with my OS, which is Windows 2000. The first time I installed Win2k on my system I used Easy CD and got the patch from their site so this CDR-W could work with win2k and Easy CD. I would soon discover that it would hang every time I tried to reboot or shut it down. I had to reinstall Win 2k to fix the problem. Soon I discovered the Easy CD Creator has problems from time to time with Win 2k and that it causes it to hang. So the second time around I didn't install it and the computer hasn't had a single issue yet. So software does matter when purchasing CDR-W drives. If you get this drive the software may not be as user friendly as Eazy CD, but it sure won't hang your system.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great burner for the price . . ., May 20, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony CRX140E/CH2 8x4x32 Internal EIDE CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
I bought this burner because of the price. It was affordable without breaking my bank book. It has an average speed capability. I am not constantly burning CDs, so why do I need to waste money to get something that burns 5 minutes faster. Anyway, it took me about 10 minutes to install the hardware and about ten more minutes to install the software. The software, in my opinion, is easy to use if you have ever touched any sort of programming involving simplified windows point and click. Heck, my girlfriend could figure out how to use it the first time she ever touched it. I have not had any problems at all. I have a Compaq Presario, a very low-brow PC and it handled the application of hardware and software seamlessly. It was ridiculously easy to install(for an internal drive). I love the software. I have burned over 50 CD-R's and about 15 CD-RW's and have had no problem. It is quick, efficient and reliable. This was a very good buy. I think anyone who is having problems either does not grasp or have the knowledge of hardware installation. Maybe try reading the directions.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exellent drive with EVEN better SOFTWARE, February 10, 2001
This review is from: Sony CRX140E/CH2 8x4x32 Internal EIDE CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
I think this drive is really good. I have burnt about 100 cdr's and have not had a single coaster because of buffer underrun. Anyway the most harsh criticism against Sony CDRW's is that the software is bad. I would like to rephrase it as " The online help of the software is TERRIBLE" it seems sony(actually it is made by PRASSI) prepared it's help in a lot of hurry !!! Anyway sony does provide an exhaustive online manual on the web which is EXCELLENT. Once you get used to this software you simply can't use anything else !!! It is that Simple !!! The Anti-wizard strategy of Sony really works. I have used Nero 5 as well as WinOnCD 3.6 but nothing even comes near Sony CDXtreme software. You can actually burn a cd in just 2 CLICKS. Also it supports upto 220 LENGTH FILENAMES and 110 JOLIET FILENAME LENGTH which no other software supports (all others support only 64). I think this is one of the best features of this SOFTWARE + it can also burn 700MB cd's which adaptec easy cd creator can't. So i highly recommend this drive and especially the software (though it may take a little time to get used to if you are new to CDRW's).

P.S. Though i must mention one flip side of this software is that it not as feature rich as Nero or WinonCD....but trust me u won't need those extra features ever!!!

2.0 out of 5 stars Terrible Software, April 25, 2001

I bought this CD-RW for my son. I spent hours trying to get the software to work, but it ALWAYS locked up the computer when trying to do a disk copy. I configured it several different ways; as master on the secondary EIDE buss with a CDROM as slave, as slave with the CDROM as master, as the only device on the EIDE secondary buss, and as a slave on the master EIDE buss. Even if the software hadn't locked up the computer it wouldn't allow you to mix songs from different CD's unless they were in MP3 or WAV format. I finally installed a copy of Adaptec's E-Z CD Creator software from my system, but it wouldn't recognize the Sony drive. A quick visit to Adaptec's web site for a free download fixed that problem. The SOFTWARE is the key to CD burning, and Sony's CD Extreme is the worst software I have ever seen for this purpose. I read a magazine review that loved this software, the only reason I could imagine for liking the Sony CD Extreme software is if you were burning CD's with a cigarette lighter before. Don't, repeat DON'T buy a CD-RW unless it comes with Adaptec's E-Z CD Creator software, or you have a copy you're sure will work with the CD-RW you're buying. I've had great success burning CD's with my 8x4x32 Phillips CD-RW that came bundled with Adaptec's E-Z CD Creator software, and it was $10.00 less than the Sony. After this experience I will never buy another Sony computer product. By-the-way, contrary to another review, the Adaptec software does support 74 or 80 minute CD recording.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great product at a Great price, August 6, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony CRX140E/CH2 8x4x32 Internal EIDE CDRW Drive (Personal Computers)
No complaints at all. Can't ask for anything better. I would have burnt around 15 CDs so far and havent had a problem at all. The software CD Extreme is so easy to use. Dont know why ppl make a big deal out of the CD Extreme software. If you dont know how to use it, download the manual from SONY's website. Overall, I am very very happy with the hardware and the software. Bottom line - If you know how to use the software, u can burn CDs with just 2-3 clicks.

I bought this burner about a year ago and it's still cranking out CD's like a charm. The software is pretty bad until you go to their site and download the update, but afterwords it was great. Unlike some other software, Sony CD extreme is reliable and easy to use. The users that had a problem with hardware either don't know how to use their PC properly or didn't check to see if their PC was compatible. I've burned about 70 CD's so far with no problems unless I interrupted the burning process by bumping the PC. The software also allows you to set a pre-gap before each song, which other software does not. I will definately continue buying sony PC products.
