I just love this cd burner/dvd rom!!!!
I bought it for my kid so she could play a dvd-rom game but I had always wanted to try burning my own music cds.
Well I am soooo pleased. Sony has made this so EASY. It was easy to install and plenty of instructions and with diagrams for the mechanically uninclined. I was intimidated but I got it in, and it worked right away.
Sony gives you some free music downloads so I went there right away to try it out. You have to download their software which took me a long time because I have a dial up connection, but it was worth it. You pick your song and download, which takes 15 minutes at dialup speed. Then you transfer it right to the cd. Bam! I got in a hurry and used a cd-r (which is not erasable) and only put two songs on the cd. After I took it out and played the songs it wouldn't let me put any more on the cd. So I need to wait until I have all my songs downloaded before I burn them to cd. I still have some things to learn.
Sony gives you software so that you can make jacket covers for the cd and to make a track listing. Nothing fancy but I liked it.
You can watch dvd's on your computer and you can drag and drop information on your hard drive to a cd so that your info is backed up. I love that too, having a way to back up my photos and other info.
You can also create video CDs.

I bought this dvd burner August 2007 from Amazon on the basis of these reviews. The burner worked fine, but then it stopped being able to work with any programs to burn disks. It will play media fine, but no longer record. It may be the device itself, but it also could be the software driver. When I went to download an updated driver, I found others online had the same problem with this Sony dvd burner that I did. And I found like they did, that Sony did not support the product with updated software drivers.

What I am saying is, before you buy a dvd player/burner make sure that the company supports their product by providing software drivers for it. I am looking for a new burner, and the next one I buy will be from a company that supports their products.

Besides working just great, this was easy to install. I know little about hardware and I was nervous opening the tower but I did it and had no problems.

This Read/Write internal unit by Sony is top notch; and the price is incredibly reasonable!!!

The most important feature that potential buyers ought to pay attention to is that the default speed is ONLY 40x. Each and every time you want 52x, you have to hold the eject button for 5 seconds. At first, this may sound like a real inconvenient pain.

Sony says this on their Product Information sheet: "On rare occasions, some discs may not be able to tolerate 52x speed, causing them to break. We recommend that you do not use deeply scratched, brittle, or other discs that may break at 52x speed."

As someone who has had an irreplaceable treasured disc shatter in a 52x CD drive, I greatly appreciate Sony setting up the drive speed in this manner.

Another surprising feature is that even though the Amazon product page shows this drive with an ivory faceplate, a black faceplate change-out kit is included. Never before have I seen a manufacturer do this for their customers.

The instructions and all other included documents are written in 12 languages.

Replaced my old drive which had died with this drive. Easy to install. Works great. Very reasonable price.

Great Sony quality. This drive is easy to install and flexible to use. I have already purchased two of them and will likely buy one more very soon to replace a factory-installed CD drive in my Gateway PC.

The Samsung that came with my Dell started giving me trouble about a year after I bought the PC. After less than 3 years it stopped working entirely. This Sony installed easily and so far works fine (I've only had it for a month). My only gripe is that the write up said it came with both a black face and a beige face, but mine only has a beige face (and my Dell is black). This cosmetic issue doesn't really bother me, but I can't give it 5 stars for this.

I bought this and obviously from my title it came pretty fast and it works great, easy installation did it on my own so you probably can too.

I've had a DVD drive for 8 years, and it has been having difficulty reading some minor-scratched DVDs, which include some newly purchased ones. So that bothered me a lot. This SONY drive takes care "some" of that problem for me. I am able to play almost all of those minor-scratched DVDs now, excepting only a couple. The actual DVD players that cannot be hooked to a computer can play those scratched DVDs OK, probably because those have a lot higher error tolerance...

Reading speed was great, setup was simply plug-and-play. No software needed unless you want to burn CDs.
