Appearances aren't deceiving,

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony D-EJ001 CD Walkman (Blue) (Electronics)
This player is 20-30 bucks cheaper than the previous generation Sony CD Walkman (D-E350) with identical features. It looks it.
The previous player was manufactured in Japan; this one is made in China. Only a hair smaller and lighter than the earlier player, this one lacks the upward-facing, finger-friendly chrome buttons. They're plastic and all but inaccessible and invisible on the player's lower, inward-slanting surface. The read-out window on the previous model was not only larger and marked more clearly but was readable from top-side; the only way to read the window on the current model is to hold the player close to your face and at eye level or higher (I'd planned to use the player in the bathroom. Not a good idea unless your toilet tank is at least 6'). As for the advertised "reduced" price, don't buy it: it's being advertised for the same price and postage-free on the Sony site. Notwithstanding all of the reservations expressed above, I was prepared to allow this mass-produced piece of plastic to impress me with pure performance. Three CD's and three "no disc" readings. It goes back to Amazon. Good thing it's light.

I will start with the bad things about this player because that is probably why you are reading this review. I must agree with the other reviewer in that these players do not last long. Mine lasted about two weeks before the laser stopped detecting the discs. My player is used about 3-4 hours each work day, but I've had other player last for years under the same conditions. The batteries are very difficult to remove because they are housed in the disc tray. When the compartment door is opened, there is very little room to work your fingers under the batteries to remove them because the door gets in the way. Also, the DC adapter receptor does not fit any of the standard adapters, even those with multiple plug offerings. I also do not like buttons for volume control because too much force can cause the disc to slip; I prefer a knob control. There were a few things I liked: the display is on the front so that it can be viewed as it rests on a shelf; play resumes where the disc was stopped without having to keep in on `pause'. However, the battery life was nowhere near the advertised life and there was no line out plug. The cons far outweigh the pros with this unit.

I almost didn't purchase this CD player because of all the bad reviews it had been getting, but I decided to go for it! I am glad I did, I am very happy with this Sony Walkman! I use it for walking, listening to meditating CDs, audio books, everything and have not had one single problem with it. I am so glad I did not let the few negative reviews sway my decision! As mentioned in another review, I love that if you have to stop playing whatever your listening to it will pick up on the same track when you press play again, it also fits in my back pocket so I can walk around the house listening to anything while doing chores, the earpieces fit well, there is absolutley nothing wrong with this walkman! Those of you who seemed to have this walkman break in 2-3 weeks must not take care of your things. I love it, the price was great, so don't let the negative reviews stop you on this purchase!

serious drop in quality,

I have always been a fan of Sony because they make quality products that are "user-friendly". That is why I was in a state of complete shock that this little blue cd walkman is made by Sony, because it is on the other end of the spectrum compared to what they usually manufacture.
First the bad...the control buttons (sound, changing tracks, pause, etc) are tiny and nearly impossible to read. I found myself having to hold the cd player up to my face to find the right button, and I do not have any vision problems. The little lcd screen is hard to read as well. Next, the sound quality is poor and has a cheap "watered down" feel to it. Then there are the stock headphones that the product comes with. These are cheap and don't fit well. I bought a yellow "psyc" sony walkman a couple years ago, and that one is 3 times the product that this one is. The sound is near-perfect and the buttons are easy to see and use. The headphones fit well and the whole package has lasted with no issues at all. I wouldn't write sony off simply b/c of this product, but I would definitely do some research prior to purchasing a walkman from them.

This Sony rounds out to have better quality than others, but design is lacking,

As far as other reviews, there must be a high defective rate because I dropped mine uncountable times and it plays like new.
As far as sound, it has the same bass settings as previous Walkmans. No bass, bass boost, and full bass, but this player lists them as sound one and two. Volume goes pretty high but not high enough to hurt your hearing. This player has enough features to make the $30 worth it. It has a bass boost, repeat one, repeat all, program, and shuffle. Don't expect a radio or MP3 features since this is only 30 bucks, but there are other models that are a little more expensive with these features. The LCD is okay when it held by your hand but very unreadable on a desk or platform unless your far enough away from it, then the numbers get small. The LCD on earlier Walkmans were larger and were slanted so they were readable above. This player as I know of comes in five colors, white, light blue, light green, pink, light orange (which looks to similar to the pink...sorry), and the more expensive ones are in black. Most guys will find any color other than black or white (maybe green) "girly", so stick with white, green, or black for guys (if your getting it as a present). The headphones are okay. They have a rubber grip that goes over your ear easily, then you can twist the earbud to fit better. I also found that you can make the grips come off and you can use them as earbuds only, the sound is the same. Sound of the headphones is okay, not as good as the Sony street style but better than the h.ear. There is also a hold button on the back if you want to ever travel with it. The back is white on all models like this. There is also an AC adapter on the top. There is no line out, make sure your not using this for a stereo. Overall it's pretty light and not too bulky. So far it's read every disc I threw in it, only ones with heavy scratches would not play (it overall did better than the Philips). Overall, you should be happy with your purchase as long as it works! 4 stars.

A Player with Plenty of Problems,
This review is from: Sony D-EJ001 CD Walkman (Blue) (Electronics)
I haven't had any trouble with this player as far as it reading discs, skipping or sound quality.
This player does use up batteries very quickly, the batteries are hard to remove due to how the space for them was designed (it's not just because they're in the disk tray because I had a Sports Walkman with a similar design, yet I didn't have trouble removing the batteries) and the top of the player which covers the disk tray doesn't fit very closely, so stuff could go under there (including long fingernails). I haven't had any problem reading the display, though it's small and light, so I can see how it could be a problem and the buttons on the player are small, so if one doesn't have small fingers, that could be a problem. Is it worth it? I would be more on the side of saying no than yes, though even when I was given a more expensive player (Sony D-SJ303 S2 Sports CD Walkman), it didn't work very well, either.

Rip-off.,

This review is from: Sony D-EJ001 CD Walkman (Blue) (Electronics)
I've only had this CD player for about two months, and today it just randomly died. I was very gentle with it, too. I would recommend this as a temporary CD player only, because of it's cheap price. Overall, it is a poorly designed player.
Pros: -Pretty color -Cheap price. Cons: -Sometimes it would skip when I was walking (Don't even THINK about running with the thing.) -HORRIBLE battery life. I've spent more on batteries than I have on the player itself. -The design is not ergonomic at all. The button layout is awful. -It's NOISY. And I don't mean the music; you can tell if it's playing or not because you can actually hear the disk turning, and all the little mechanical operations that are going on inside this peice of junk. -The lid (or whatever it's called) does not seem to fit properly and it lets crud into the CD Player. I have a disk that got torn up INSIDE the player, all because of dirt that got in. -It doesn't work for very long. At all. -If you jostle it, sometimes it turns off, and sometimes it stars playing the CD from the very beginning.

Just fine...,

Pros:
- My player did not skip, ever. - Looks okay, I guess - Cheap?? - Has bass and good sound (loudest setting is loud, quietest is quiet) Cons: - Not that durable. Although I was rougher on this player than on the others I had, I started having all sorts of problems I've never seen before such as: top would not close all the way, not keeping dirt out of the inside; tapping the top would cause the player to turn off; lots of static and drops in volume because of loose parts (probably my fault) - Those earbuds. They are uncomfortable to me, but I guess I just got the bad ears. Oh, and if you choose to use earphones instead, remember that this player was designed for earbuds, so the music will not be as loud. It worked fine with my headphones though. - Bad design. Every other reviewer was right. Buttons are small and close together, none on the top. The screen is small, and the batteries are harder than normal to remove. Takes getting accustomed to. In all, I am buying another one, because bad stuff isn't that bad. My player worked great until the time I think I broke it. The sound was great, and you really can't get great sound for the same price.

Great,
This review is from: Sony D-EJ001 CD Walkman (Blue) (Electronics)
I purchased this product for myself and my husband to take with us when we walk or fish or whatever. The first time I used it I was so impressed with it, it didn't skip then shut down, it kept right on.
One of the best things I like about it is, if you have to turned it off for some reason, it picks up right where you left of instead of having to go through the whole CD again to get there. This is a wonderful thing to me as I do audio books, now I can just close it like a book and open it back to the spot I left it on. Thanks so much. J L Hunter

Bought this for my 13 year old daughter to take on an airplane. She had other CD players but always complained that they skipped. I think she tortured this CD player and it had never missed a beat. Great item and well worth the money.
