As with most of Sony's personal CD players, the D-NE005 is suited to active use as well. The unit is equipped with Sony's Skip-Free G-Protection technology, which minimizes read errors that would otherwise interrupt your music. As a result, the CD player withstands both horizontal and vertical shocks from such hazards as potholes, bumps, and accidental drops. Adding to the portable convenience is the pair of clip-on headphones, which stay secure over your ears when you're jogging or working out.
The D-NE005 also supports bookmark playback, so you can program your favorite songs from multiple CDs and play them back with the touch of a button. Bookmarking makes it easy to program and play a personalized soundtrack--a must when exercising. Other audio enhancements include a digital volume function that allows for extremely precise volume adjustments; a two-position Automatic Volume Limiter System (AVLS), which maintains the volume output at levels below the distortion threshold for a cleaner overall sound; and Digital Mega Bass sound, which boosts the low frequencies to produce rich, deep bass tones with extremely low harmonic distortion.
The CD player offers approximately 23 hours of MP3 playback on a single pair of AA batteries (not included). Listeners are also assured of a long battery life thanks to the auto shutoff feature, which instinctively powers down the player when it's not in use. The D-NE005 measures 5.5 by 1.1 by 5.5 inches (W x H x D) and is backed by a one-year warranty on parts and a 90-day warranty on labor.

Best Valued MP3 player,

This is the best valued MP3 player out there.I am a huge fan of the CD/MP3 player. Here are the reasons/benefits why I love it: 1. I don't have to convert my entire old CD collection into MP3's. 2. I can burn around 7 hours of music onto 1 CD. Perfect for road trips, or in my case, I burn entire audio books onto one CD. 3. CD's are incredibly cheap. 4. I have an unlimited amount of storage on this MP3 player, because I can switch discs. Unlike Ipods or similar ones, once you have maxed out, that is it (you can't change the hard drive in an Ipod). 5. This thing is so inexpensive, I don't feel like I have to wear white gloves when using it. I bought 3 as gifts for my wife, Dad, and Father-in-law. 6. It's so easy, my Dad can use it. Though, I still have to burn the CD's for him. But I never expected him to know how to do that or plug in an Ipod and transfer tunes either. 7. If you get a wireless transmitter ($15-$35) you can play it in your car. I have had great success with this. Look for one that has a cigarette lighter adapter. 8. It takes double A batteries. Just use the rechargeables, and you're set. Or if you are on a road trip, just get another set on the road. The drawbacks of this particular model: 1. It is not made of metal and glass. But I don't think it is going to break on me. I think it is not cheaply made. And for the price it doesn't matter. 2. When you are playing an MP3, you can not rewind or fast-forward within the track. You can in CD mode, but not in MP3 mode. You can skip tracks though. I have to admit, this is is a little annoying, especially if you are listening to an audio book. I think this has something to do with CD/MP3 players today. I have one I got from Panasonic a few years ago (still works and I use it everyday in the car) and the Panasonic has the same behavior. 3. The buttons are not positioned that well. 4. It is bigger than an Ipod-type of player. It is the size of a regular CD Walkman, so it's not huge, but it is definitely bigger than an Ipod. 5. "Keeping-up-with-the-Jones'-factor" I hate to admit it, but it looks like an CD player and not an Ipod. And Ipods have a certain type of asthetic appeal. This does come with the white head phones, and it is stylishly designed. But it looks like a CD player, and when you're jogging down the street it looks like you are carrying a CD player. It is just too close to the 90's to look vintage and retro. But if you don't care about that, hey it's perfect. BTW, I just turned 30 and just got married, so I have this silly thought about getting older. Oh well :) The bottom line. Value. If you don't have a lot of money to spend on an MP3 player, this is a great choice. Sorry about the long review. I hope it was helpful.

A cheap iPod alternative,

This CD player sounds fine -- at $40, there's nothing to complain about. The stock headphones are horrible, of course, but I have posh in-the-ear ones, so this isn't a problem.I bought this CD player after a couple of unfortunate events. First, my iPod broke: the bearings on the hard drive started grinding, the headphone jack started playing up, exactly what you'd expect from a $300 piece of kit. So I switched back to my beloved Panasonic Metal Shockwave CD player, but it was stolen on Thanksgiving, which was nice. At first, I thought I'd bite the bullet and buy another iPod, but bitterness prevented it. So I thought I'd buy a fairly cheap CD player and go through an album-appreciation phase. I didn't register at first that this machine plays MP3s until I accidently burned a CD of one of my favorites (yes, music industry, I bought the CD) because I wanted it on my computer at work. The CD player told me it was playing MP3s and the rest is history. One CD can hold approximately five hours of MP3s. You can play albums or playlists one at a time using its folder function, you can even shuffle individual albums you're listening to, or you can shuffle the whole disc, which is great. Battery life is pretty amazing -- I play it every day and I change batteries every three weeks or so. And I get much of the functionality of an iPod for a fraction of the price. If it broke, I would buy a new one. I don't know how hardy it is; I haven't dropped it yet. But while it is fairly plasticy and the headphones are uncomfortable and tinny, this is definitely a bargain solution for anyone who wants iPod benefits for cheap and who can live with the size of a portable CD player.

Great for the price,

I just recently got this CD player, and overall I'm very happy with it. I didn't expect much from it because of the cheap price, but I'm happy to say this player proved to me that something can be cheap, and still work well.I'll admit the headphones that come with it aren't very good. The sound quality they deliver is pretty bad, and I've never been fond of "in the ear" style headphones. Luckily for me, I had new stereo headphones delivered in the same order. Anyway, the quality of the CD player's sound is pretty good, and in my opinion, the battery life is great. I bought this player to replace my old broken GPX unit, and the batteries last at least twice as long in this player. The location of the batteries is somewhat odd (you put them in on the inside of the player, under the CD), but personally I like it. It helps maintain the sleek look of the outside of the unit. My only real complaint about the CD player itself, is that it doesn't seem too awefully sturdy. It seems like the lid might come off somewhat easily if dropped, but I'm not planning on throwing it around, so it doesn't bother me much. All in all, it's a great CD player, from a respectable name, for a good price.
