5.0 out of 5 stars Best Valued MP3 player
This is the best valued MP3 player out there.

I am a huge fan of the CD/MP3 player. Here are the reasons/benefits why I love it:

1. I don't have to convert my entire old CD collection into MP3's.
2. I can burn around 7 hours of music onto 1 CD. Perfect for road trips, or in my case, I burn entire audio books onto one CD.

I have owned maybe 8 portable cd players in my lifetime, most of them sonys. This is the cheapest one I've bought and I noticed the following right away:

-the viewing screen is tiny

-it takes a long time from the moment you hit play to actually hearing music (alomost ten seconds)

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Valued MP3 player, August 2, 2006

This review is from: Sony D-NE005BLUE CD Walkman with MP3 Playback (Blue) (Electronics)

3. CD's are incredibly cheap.
4. I have an unlimited amount of storage on this MP3 player, because I can switch discs. Unlike Ipods or similar ones, once you have maxed out, that is it (you can't change the hard drive in an Ipod).
5. This thing is so inexpensive, I don't feel like I have to wear white gloves when using it. I bought 3 as gifts for my wife, Dad, and Father-in-law.
6. It's so easy, my Dad can use it. Though, I still have to burn the CD's for him. But I never expected him to know how to do that or plug in an Ipod and transfer tunes either.
7. If you get a wireless transmitter ($15-$35) you can play it in your car. I have had great success with this. Look for one that has a cigarette lighter adapter.
8. It takes double A batteries. Just use the rechargeables, and you're set. Or if you are on a road trip, just get another set on the road.

The drawbacks of this particular model:
1. It is not made of metal and glass. But I don't think it is going to break on me. I think it is not cheaply made. And for the price it doesn't matter.
2. When you are playing an MP3, you can not rewind or fast-forward within the track. You can in CD mode, but not in MP3 mode. You can skip tracks though. I have to admit, this is is a little annoying, especially if you are listening to an audio book. I think this has something to do with CD/MP3 players today. I have one I got from Panasonic a few years ago (still works and I use it everyday in the car) and the Panasonic has the same behavior.
3. The buttons are not positioned that well.
4. It is bigger than an Ipod-type of player. It is the size of a regular CD Walkman, so it's not huge, but it is definitely bigger than an Ipod.
5. "Keeping-up-with-the-Jones'-factor" I hate to admit it, but it looks like an CD player and not an Ipod. And Ipods have a certain type of asthetic appeal. This does come with the white head phones, and it is stylishly designed. But it looks like a CD player, and when you're jogging down the street it looks like you are carrying a CD player. It is just too close to the 90's to look vintage and retro. But if you don't care about that, hey it's perfect. BTW, I just turned 30 and just got married, so I have this silly thought about getting older. Oh well :)

The bottom line. Value.
If you don't have a lot of money to spend on an MP3 player, this is a great choice.
Sorry about the long review. I hope it was helpful.

4.0 out of 5 stars A cheap iPod alternative, February 24, 2006

This CD player sounds fine -- at $40, there's nothing to complain about. The stock headphones are horrible, of course, but I have posh in-the-ear ones, so this isn't a problem.

I bought this CD player after a couple of unfortunate events. First, my iPod broke: the bearings on the hard drive started grinding, the headphone jack started playing up, exactly what you'd expect from a $300 piece of kit.

So I switched back to my beloved Panasonic Metal Shockwave CD player, but it was stolen on Thanksgiving, which was nice. At first, I thought I'd bite the bullet and buy another iPod, but bitterness prevented it. So I thought I'd buy a fairly cheap CD player and go through an album-appreciation phase.

I didn't register at first that this machine plays MP3s until I accidently burned a CD of one of my favorites (yes, music industry, I bought the CD) because I wanted it on my computer at work. The CD player told me it was playing MP3s and the rest is history.

One CD can hold approximately five hours of MP3s. You can play albums or playlists one at a time using its folder function, you can even shuffle individual albums you're listening to, or you can shuffle the whole disc, which is great.

Battery life is pretty amazing -- I play it every day and I change batteries every three weeks or so. And I get much of the functionality of an iPod for a fraction of the price. If it broke, I would buy a new one.

I don't know how hardy it is; I haven't dropped it yet. But while it is fairly plasticy and the headphones are uncomfortable and tinny, this is definitely a bargain solution for anyone who wants iPod benefits for cheap and who can live with the size of a portable CD player.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for the price, March 22, 2006

I just recently got this CD player, and overall I'm very happy with it. I didn't expect much from it because of the cheap price, but I'm happy to say this player proved to me that something can be cheap, and still work well.

I'll admit the headphones that come with it aren't very good. The sound quality they deliver is pretty bad, and I've never been fond of "in the ear" style headphones. Luckily for me, I had new stereo headphones delivered in the same order. Anyway, the quality of the CD player's sound is pretty good, and in my opinion, the battery life is great. I bought this player to replace my old broken GPX unit, and the batteries last at least twice as long in this player. The location of the batteries is somewhat odd (you put them in on the inside of the player, under the CD), but personally I like it. It helps maintain the sleek look of the outside of the unit.

My only real complaint about the CD player itself, is that it doesn't seem too awefully sturdy. It seems like the lid might come off somewhat easily if dropped, but I'm not planning on throwing it around, so it doesn't bother me much.

All in all, it's a great CD player, from a respectable name, for a good price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great price and great performance, August 9, 2006

Love this CD player. It is durable, has 45-second delay so that you can jog with it (and it sounds great while on delay), has terrific enhanced bass and great earphones! Only one complaint: the batteries are a little difficult to change. However, the machine is battery frugal. Go Sony!

5.0 out of 5 stars Extremely Good, December 18, 2005
This review is from: Sony D-NE005BLUE CD Walkman with MP3 Playback (Blue) (Electronics)
Really good diskman with good quality sound. Only possible disadvantage is that even if you save songs in different folders in a CD (in MP3 format), it plays them and numbers them cotinuously and not like (T01-01, T01-02 .... T02-01 etc..)... It lables them as (01, 02, 03.... )... I find this personally a small disadvantage as I have all my songs sorted in artist order on MP3..

Apart from that a really good diskman... Just heard it for the first time today..

I have owned maybe 8 portable cd players in my lifetime, most of them sonys. This is the cheapest one I've bought and I noticed the following right away:

-it's pretty clunky

-the viewing screen is tiny

-it takes a long time from the moment you hit play to actually hearing music (alomost ten seconds)

-The programing is really limited i.e. you can either listen to one song and it shuts off (haven't found a use for this yet) or you can shuffle. No repeating or programming that I can tell.

And so far I haven't experienced anything positive with the actual design over previous models I've used. All things considered the sound is very comparable and that has outweighed the flaws. It has two bass boost settings and the first one is full sounding but not painfully bassy

Also the battery life is good. I would buy it again.

4.0 out of 5 stars MP3 For Dummies, September 27, 2006
This review is from: Sony D-NE005BLUE CD Walkman with MP3 Playback (Blue) (Electronics)
These days, everybody has to find a way to MP3 their music off the internet. Although there are those who want to get into it, but they don't know how, they've got two options. Either you can choose to get a digital MP3 player like a Ipod, where you can store several different songs on the go, or you can try the traditional way by storing them onto a MP3 CD you make from your computer. For those who are interested in buying a proper MP3 CD player, they might have a tough time trying to find which ones are the best ones for all. Thankfully, the people at Sony know what it is like, and they've made a high-quality MP3 CD player, for all to enjoy.

The Sony DNE005 MP3 CD Player, is a very simple, and easy to operate MP3 CD player for those who want to MP3, but can't afford it, or who've had a tough time downloading music off the internet. This simple player, plays all your traditonal CD's, as well as your burned discs from you MP3 files, and CD-R/RW discs that you simply record. The battery life handles very well, as well as the surprisingly strong Skip Free G-Protection, which isn't really labeled on the LED screen but hasn't had any problems either. There are a few disadvantages though with this CD player. One of them is that you cannot play Windows Media music files you download off the internet, they have to be converted to WAV or MP3 files instead. Another disadvantage is the the display screen is very small, and can be tough to read at times.

I definitely needed another MP3 CD player after my previous one broke down, and this one by Sony is very convient and affordable for all who want a portable MP3 player. I definitely recommend the DNE005 CD player a whole lot. I'm very impressed with it. It is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Works like a charm, November 5, 2006

I've used this player every day for three months, and it works like a charm. In fact, I use it so much, it has become more economical for me to invest in rechargable batteries. The sound reproduction is excellent, and the included earhook-earbud headphones are comfortable for all day wear, and don't prevent hearing of ambient sounds and conversation. The mp3 capability is what I especially like, since I can record several small books, or a single large one, on a single disk. A really nice feature: It restarts exactly where last stopped, EVEN AFTER BATTERY CHANGE. There is a significant delay at startup while it reads the files, but subsequent navigation between files is nearly instantaneous. I have accidentally dropped it several times on a hard floor (once on asphalt from pickup truck seat) and it just bounces and rolls. I love it!
