With a new baby on the way, I wanted a camcorder that would enable me to easily load the video to my PC and e-mail it to out-of-state relatives. With this camera and a FireWire card (sold separately) I'm able to do just that. The LaserLink and NightShot work well. The 4" LCD is great. If you plan to use the LCD instead of the viewfinder (and you probably will like the LCD better) get an extra battery, because the LCD is a battery hog. Great camera. If I had it to do over again, I'd get the same camera.

This is a great camcorder. I had a Sony Hi-8 camcorder which stopped working and the nice thing about these Digital 8's from Sony is that there is backward compatibility on the old formats.

Lot's of excellent features, but you pay for it in weight and battery use. The 4" screen is excellent, and if you have kids, its nice to show them (with sound) what you just captured. The color viewfinder also works great if you are used to using that (as I am from my old HI-8 camcorder). It also saves on battery usage if you use that instead of the 4" screen.

From a battery standpoint, you really need the 8hour or more batteries that are sold seperately, or you will be recharging all the time. The 8hr Sony battery lasts about 5 hours on this camcorder. I highly recommend you buy Sony batteries as they have a chip on the battery which lets the Camcorder read how much power is left. That feature is great.

I wish that Amazon had better rates on this camcorder though. I bought it at another site on the web for about ... (yes new). They also had it in stock, whereas Amazon seems to have problems keeping some of the different camcorders in stock...

I OWN A FULL SIZE PANASONIC CAMCORDER AND WANTED TO UPGRADE TO A DIGITAL AND COMPACT CAMCORDER. AFTER A LOT OF RESEARCH I DECIDED ON THE SONY TRV-720. THIS CAMCORDER SO FAR IS GREAT. THE DIGITAL VIDEO PICTURE AND AUDIO PLAYBACK IS EXCELLENT COMPARING IT TO MY OLDER FULL SIZE CAMCORDER. WHAT MADE ME BUY IT WAS THE 25X OPTICAL LENSE (THE 18X DIGITAL IS VERY GOOD BUT PICTURE QUALITY GETS GRAINIER THE MORE YOU ZOOM IN.) YOU CAN TURN THE DIGITAL ZOOM OFF IF YOU WANT. OTHER FEATURES THAT SHOULD BE HELPFUL ARE THE COLOR EYEPIECE VIEWFINDER, MANUAL IRIS CONTROL, 6 PRESET EXPOSURE SETTINGS FROM CANDLELIGHT TO FAST ACTION AND NIGHTSHOT. THE CAMCORDER HAS JACKS TO CONNECT TO YOUR COMPUTER USING FIREWIRE OR YOUR SERIAL PORT. COMES WITH SOFTWARE FOR STILL VIDEO TRANSFER TO YOUR COMPUTER. THE STILL VIDEO CAPTURE ON A MEMORY STICK IS VERY GOOD. DONT EXPECT PHOTOGRAPHY QUALITY PICTURES. THIS FEATURE IS NICE TO HAVE AND PRODUCES GOOD TO VERY GOOD PICTURES ON A DECENT PRINTER. THE ONLY NEGATIVE THING ABOUT THE CAMCORDER IS THE BATTERY. IT'S RATED FOR 90 MINUTES BUT YOUR LUCKY TO GET 60 USING THE 4" LCD VIEWFINDER. I PURCHASED SONY'S 12 HOUR BATTERY #960 AND IT'S GREAT. YOU'LL GET ABOUT 7 HOURS OF RECORDING USING THE 4" DISPLAY. I SAVED ALOT OF MONEY BUYING IT THROUGH THE INTERNET. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS DIGITAL CAMCORDER TO SOMEONE WHO WANTS TO UPGRADE THEIR EXISTING CAMCORDER OR FOR THE 1st TIME BUYER.
