Product Description

Amazon.com Product Description

Sony's D-EJ815 CD Walkman, with patented G-Protection anti-skip memory, provides 10 times faster shock recovery compared to other portable CD players. Sony guarantees skip-free playing during any activity, whether you are walking or jogging.

Nine playback modes give you a choice of how you want to hear your CDs, including full-repeat/random options. The 64-track programming provides additional customized playback. The Digital Mega Bass system produces deep low-end tones, and the two-position automatic volume limiter system (AVLS) maintains volume levels for clean sound reproduction.

The Walkman runs on two AA batteries, and two ni-cad rechargeables are included. An extended battery life (up to 76 hours) is possible when you equip the external battery case (included) with an extra set of AA batteries (not included). MDR headphones (with LCD display), and a carrying case are also included.

Sony provides a one-year parts, 90-day labor warranty.

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm very disappointed in Sony, September 8, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
I needed a new CD Walkman, so immediately looked to Sony. The construction and features of this model are nicely designed and well thought out. I really like the backlit display, but don't care much for the junk headphones supplied.

Now for the bad.....First, the silkscreening of the words above the buttons is all crooked (the display model did not exhibit this problem). I'm disappointed Sony let this slip by in the factory.

As far as the sound is concerned, I can't imagine a CD player sounding any worse (thought I'm sure some of the $29 players are worse.....cringe). I compared the sound of the D-EJ815 to my old Sony D-777, and the 777 wins hands down. The D-EJ815 bass response is muddy and weak, the midrange sounds very compressed, and to judge the overall sound I'd say its about the same as a cassette walkman with an average quality recorded tape. Keep in mind that you will likely not notice a problem if you listen through the junky headphones supplied, but for those people who will spend $100+ on headphones, or choose to connect this CD player to a stereo system, forget it....move on...this one is not for you.

Worse is the fact that I listened to the higher end D-EJ915 in the store, using my headphones, and noticed it also sounds relatively poor compared to my D-777. Must be either the G-Protection memory causing the compressed sound, or the cheapy laser pickup unit in these newer players. Its clear that Sony is cutting costs.

Have not had a chance to listen to a D-EJ01, since no one in Miami has it in stock. I'm not convinced this will sound any better, I'm thinking that the extra cost for this unit will be absorbed in the front loading mechanism and the metal body. Doubt Sony focused on better sound quality.

What am I to do?? Maybe Panasonic??

3.0 out of 5 stars nice looking portable, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
I reckon, when it comes to portables, manufacturers like Sony have the following as their priority (listed in order of diminishing priority):

#1. Good looking and light; 2. Survive shocks; 3. Long battery life; 4. Sound quality.

On the first 3, Sony achieved 100%.

However on the last one, it's an embarrassment. The highest non-clipping volume is too low, it'd midrange frequency response is underemphasised. My 6-7 year old Technics portable sounds so much better than this new state-of-the-art player.

Don't bother connecting anything but cheap ear-buds to this unit.

If you're a big guy like me, you'll need to buy new headphones with a longer cord. The cord on the headphones makes it impossible for big folk to hook this thing on their shorts or slacks. The only other alternative is to put the unit in your top pocket, which is impossible because the unit is too big. The volume on this unit, even when at 100%, just isn't enough. My other gripe with this thing is the "bass" boost. What a joke! All the bass boost does is cloud the image of the music. This includes jazz, classical, metal and 50's tunes. The bass boost is just hogwash.
