5.0 out of 5 stars CD Player-MUST HAVE!
If you are in the market for a Portable CD Player, then look no further! Everything that you would possibly need is right here, and in a very attractive package too! If you are willing to spend the [money], then you will definetly be getting your money's worth...the 815 has 76 hours of playback time (with the external battery pack), it has almost NO skipping at all...

3.0 out of 5 stars I'm very disappointed in Sony, September 8, 2000

This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
I needed a new CD Walkman, so immediately looked to Sony. The construction and features of this model are nicely designed and well thought out. I really like the backlit display, but don't care much for the junk headphones supplied.

Now for the bad.....First, the silkscreening of the words above the buttons is all crooked (the display model did not exhibit this problem). I'm disappointed Sony let this slip by in the factory.

As far as the sound is concerned, I can't imagine a CD player sounding any worse (thought I'm sure some of the $29 players are worse.....cringe). I compared the sound of the D-EJ815 to my old Sony D-777, and the 777 wins hands down. The D-EJ815 bass response is muddy and weak, the midrange sounds very compressed, and to judge the overall sound I'd say its about the same as a cassette walkman with an average quality recorded tape. Keep in mind that you will likely not notice a problem if you listen through the junky headphones supplied, but for those people who will spend $100+ on headphones, or choose to connect this CD player to a stereo system, forget it....move on...this one is not for you.

Worse is the fact that I listened to the higher end D-EJ915 in the store, using my headphones, and noticed it also sounds relatively poor compared to my D-777. Must be either the G-Protection memory causing the compressed sound, or the cheapy laser pickup unit in these newer players. Its clear that Sony is cutting costs.

Have not had a chance to listen to a D-EJ01, since no one in Miami has it in stock. I'm not convinced this will sound any better, I'm thinking that the extra cost for this unit will be absorbed in the front loading mechanism and the metal body. Doubt Sony focused on better sound quality.

What am I to do?? Maybe Panasonic??

3.0 out of 5 stars nice looking portable, August 17, 2000
This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
I reckon, when it comes to portables, manufacturers like Sony have the following as their priority (listed in order of diminishing priority):

#1. Good looking and light; 2. Survive shocks; 3. Long battery life; 4. Sound quality.

On the first 3, Sony achieved 100%.

However on the last one, it's an embarrassment. The highest non-clipping volume is too low, it'd midrange frequency response is underemphasised. My 6-7 year old Technics portable sounds so much better than this new state-of-the-art player.

Don't bother connecting anything but cheap ear-buds to this unit.

If you're a big guy like me, you'll need to buy new headphones with a longer cord. The cord on the headphones makes it impossible for big folk to hook this thing on their shorts or slacks. The only other alternative is to put the unit in your top pocket, which is impossible because the unit is too big. The volume on this unit, even when at 100%, just isn't enough. My other gripe with this thing is the "bass" boost. What a joke! All the bass boost does is cloud the image of the music. This includes jazz, classical, metal and 50's tunes. The bass boost is just hogwash.

It also has a great feature for Minidsic and Digital enthusiasts out there...yes of course, I am talking about the Digital Optical Cable output on this bad boy! Wow, this player absolutely takes my heart away! I feel like I can fall in love again after using this one! Buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Buy!, March 5, 2001

I spent a lot of time trying to decide whether to get the Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman or one of the other top-of-the-line discmans out there. After much consideration, I went with the DEJ815 and I haven't regretted it since. The pros of this little discman are endless-- I am very satisfied with it, it has never let me down in any area, and I would definitely recommend it to anyone who's considering buying a new discman.

First of all, it looks great- very sleek, light and thin. The controls are well laid out. The sound is very good- especially with the Mega Bass. The headphones are a bit cheap, but those can easily be replaced. The backlit remote is convenient for controlling your discman while running. As for skipping- IT WON'T SKIP. I've shaken it, dropped it on the floor, jogged with it, and it has never skipped. I replaced the rechargeable batteries for a two-week trip with 2 normal AA batteries, and after playing 15+ full CDs on it, the battery was still full. With the rechargeable batteries it will last a few days, then can be charged back up to full within 2 hours, which saves a lot of money on batteries. The CD to MD text transfer is useful for me when I record on to my minidisc player, but most people don't need that feature. The included rubber carry case w/handle is great for use while jogging.

As for the other popular discmans out there-- the DEJ915 has an impractical design, the DEJ611 is OK but does not match up to the DEJ815 in quality.

I am very satisfied with this discman. I recommend spending the extra money on this one instead of buying a cheap one then having to replace it later when it breaks. It looks great, it sounds great, has long battery life and plenty of extras. Overall, it's a solid product and well worth the price.

4.0 out of 5 stars AMAZING battery life, November 25, 2000

This diskman comes with everything possible you could want in a diskman, Rechargeable batteries which seem to last for ever. I take this diskman with me running for an hour each day and i never had a problem with it skipping, so if you are looking for a diskman to take jogging this is for you. The only flip side is if you are the kinda person who likes to juice up their headphones to the maximum level of sound you will be dissapointed on the bass, and the quality. But overall this is a defenite buy for those who dont like eating through batteries and like to jog with headphones

5.0 out of 5 stars It sounds fine to me, March 21, 2001

This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
Many of the negative reviews seem to focus on the "poor quality" of the sound or bass. As a regular music listener, let me say right off that the Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman sounds fine to me. You might have some complaints if you are some music or sound junkie who can discern the difference in a change of decibiles, but there is nothing overtly wrong with the sound.

The most appealing feature of the DEJ815 is the g-protection. My DEJ815 has not skipped even once since I've purchased it. So comfortable am I with the player that I take it with me wherever I go without the slightest concern. The player is very compact and weighs very little, allowing me to put it in my backpack or even the pockets in my pants without weighing me down.

If you are looking for a portable CD player that's compact, lightweight, and sounds decent enough for everyday play, I highly recommend the DEJ815.

5.0 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BUY, November 29, 2000

This CD player sounds great. The battery life is the best, when I first bought it the manual instructs to charge the supplied batteries at full capacity before use, wich only took three hours to charge them.So then I was ready to listen to my new CD player and it sounded great. The only down fall was that my ears hurt the next day from hearing it to loud, and I learned pretty quick not to here it at full blast. And also the instruction manual says not to recharge the batteries until the batteries are fully discharged, and it took a couple of days to discharge them with loud and full bass use.You wont be dissapointed with this buy and the remote is very handy to.

4.0 out of 5 stars nice package, ok sound, January 30, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
I have to admit I read all the reviews of this CD player beforebuying it, and even after I noticed that most people said the soundquality was not that great, I still opted to buy it. I was using anAiwa sports discman before this one, which was huge, and I was hopingto get a very compact discman because I was tired of the size of myprevious CD player. So I was a little prepared for just OK sound.People were right, the bass boost function is worthless, but I don'tthink the sound is THAT bad. Actually, it's pretty good up till aboutthe 6.5-7 volume settings. (but once you get above that, the soundsgets a little staticky) I didn't care for the headphones that camewith the CD player, but I switched to my own and it was muchbetter.

The remote is a wonderful little thing. I love how itlights up, so when I use the CD player in the dark (i.e. in my car) Ican still see what track it's on. And having the remote makes theoverall cord longer.

One big issue I have with the player is that ithas a tendency to stop at some tracks and not move on. At first Ithought it was the CD, since it was one I had burned myself. However,on subsequent trials with various other CDs (some of which were notburned but store-bought), the same thing happened. I am not sure whyit does that, but it's very annoying.

I must commend Sony on itsG-protection, however. The thing virtually never skips, and thebattery life is amazing! I bought a new 8-pack of batteries before Igot this discman because my old one ate them up, but I have only useda few and I use my discman frequently. I brought the CD player on theplane with me (on a 14-hour flight) and there was still about halfleft in the batteries afterwards. The unit even comes withrechargeables, so you never really have to buy batteries anymore.

Ifit weren't for the weird pauses between tracks that happens with myunit, I would totally give it 5 stars. I have one question though:why is the blue one ... more than the silver one at amazon? They'reexactly the same (well, except for the color, of course).

5.0 out of 5 stars O Yea...., April 21, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DEJ815 CD Walkman, Blue (Electronics)
This cd player is very useful. I have own this cd player for 3 months....it [is] worth the investment. The cd player offers backlight on the top of it and even on its remote control. The cd player has a self recharging capability so you will never have to waste your money on batterys every 2 weeks. I charge my cd play every weekend overnight so i never have to buy battery. The device is metal on the top and plastic on the bottem. The cd player has never fail to work properly. It is less then a inch thick, has 2 bass function, external battery, and can play cd-r cds. The only problem is that i have no use for the carry case, the extra external battery, the head phone really sucks and i sold the remote control not because there was anything wrong with it, I just had no use for it...but maybe some people might like it. The most useful item that comes with the cd player is the cd player of course, the ac adapter for recharging the battery, and the rechargable battery.
