Sony's DNE-920 MP3/ATRAC CD Walkman Portable Compact Disc Player sports some of Sony's most advanced technical and design features, making it one of the finest and most stylish compact disc players on the market today.

For starters, the player's new, exceptionally slim, lightweight aluminum body design and overall new high-tech look sets it apart from virtually every other portable CD player. These features extend to the player's slim-line remote that fits naturally in your hand and allows you to take advantage of the player's array of operations using just your thumb. Also included is a new high-tech carrying case that rounds out the player's overall cutting-edge design.

As for the technology behind the player, Sony's advanced Sony DSP system means that you can play your music for over 100 hours continuously off of one rechargeable battery, which is included with the player, and one AA battery (not included). And when you're finished with your listening, simply place the Walkman on its specially designed stand to recharge the battery.

A 5-line negative/positive backlit LCD allows you to select the display properties of the LCD, providing a unique way to view track, title, album and artist information of ATRAC or MP3 CDs you're playing. Sony has also provided a highly intuitive file navigation system -- the new Vertical Jog Lever Control -- and a new digital amplifier that is much smaller, uses less energy to produce the same signal, and is 80 percent more efficient than traditional analog amplifiers.

The player's Skip-Free G-Protection technology provides quick recovery from both horizontal and vertical shocks, so hitting those unexpected pot holes or making sudden stops won't ever interfere with your listening while you're on the go. Playback options include 18 playback modes and a bookmark function that offers a wide array of listening choices, including hearing one track repeatedly, hearing a selection of tracks in a desired order, or listening to tracks randomly.

Compatible with Sony's ATRAC3plus technology, the DNE-920 Walkman is loaded and ready to play the rewritable CDs of albums and tracks you download and burn from Sony's Connect Music Store. The player also comes bundled with Sony's SonicStage CD Simple Burner software. Compatible with most CD burners, this application transfers songs from CDs or MP3 music files from your PC's hard drive and burns them to recordable CDs using ATRAC3plus compression.

ATRAC3plus is Sony's high-quality audio-compression technology that reduces the size of digital audio files while preserving much of a track's original sound quality (similar in concept to MP3 or Dolby Digital sound formats). With ATRAC3plus, music can be burned and compressed at 132, 105, 66, 64, or even 48 kbps (kilobits per second), letting you select the right balance between fidelity and storage space, and allowing you to burn up to 490 songs to a disc at 48 kbps.

Other features include Sony's Digital Mega Bass Sound, which produces rich, deep, bass tones with extremely low harmonic distortion; a five-direction control key, which means that you control five individual functions from a single button; a three-line LCD that provides fast and easy identification of track, title, album and artist information along the location of specific songs; and an automatic shut-off feature that powers the player down when it's not in use, helping to further conserve battery power.

I purchased this CD player for its multi-format reading capabilities, long-lasting rechargeable gumstick battery, 5-line backlit display on the player (1 line on the remote), extensive options such as a customizable graphic equalizer and numerous play modes, and of course the trusted Sony name. The first remarkable thing I noticed about this player when I received it in the mail was its extremely small size - hardly any wider than a cd and very thin. You could stow it away if you have deep enough pockets, and use the included remote to operate almost every function without touching the player itself.
The player is smart enough to recognize ID3 tags which is handy when they are included on a cd.
It comes with software for SonicStage which allows the user to burn ATRAC or ATRACplus (or MP3) data files which the player will read. The battery lasts longer when playing these types of files than when playing a standard cd, but either way it is nice to come home and stick the player into the charging stand overnight and not keep buying new batteries for it all the time.
The CD player does not come with a car kit. However, I find that an AC adapter is not needed due to the incredible battery life, and a casette adapter can be easily purchased separately at a store.
If the gumstick battery happens to die and you simply can't recharge it at the moment, you can attach the external AA battery case.
The player has a digital amplifier which doesn't cut down on battery life when you crank up the volume.
In addition to a customizable graphic equalizer, there are also a small handful of equalizer presets, plus four bass intensity options.
The included earbuds serve their purpose but if you're going to be listening under headphones most of the time, I'd suggest purchasing a higher quality pair if you are picky about sound quality.
Some of the features are difficult to navigate on the cd player & remote, but that's easily fixed: read the manual first.
The player has a durable aluminum casing but if you're going to be tossing it into the car a lot, look into buying a more cushioned carrying case. The G-Protection anti-skip can take a little beating, but I like to protect my new player from scratches and such.
This is one high-quality little cd player! One of the best on the market, I'd say. It's worth the price.

My DNE920 failed after about 30 hours of use. I paid to return it for a warranty exchange ($15). The exchange unit (supposedly fully re-manufactured and tested) turned off with the slightest bump - such as setting it (not dropping, setting) on a sofa or sliding it into my pocket. Not a skip - the unit would turn off and reboot. This time, Sony paid the shipping both ways. The second replacement unit seems to work OK, but the charging base arrived broken: the electrodes were broken off. As the broken-off pieces were not in the sealed bag, the base must have been broken when it was put in the bag. The repair center wants the entire package (player and all accessories) returned to exchange, yet again; another 10-day turnaround. My conclusion: the repair center is out of control. Don't depend on any repair service from Sony. If it breaks, kiss it goodbye.

Oh, Yes: The sound quality is outstanding when it works. Especially with upgraded earphones. I listen to classical.

like this player alot, I use it on my motorcycle, the controls on the ear pice wire helps out a great deal. skips on the motorcycle unless its starped on me.
