4.0 out of 5 stars An entry level digital photo frame with a high quality display
The DPF-D72 is another entry level DPF from Sony. The D72 and the cheaper DPF-A72 both share a 7" display, but the D72 comes with an additional glossy glass-like panel that protects the LCD panel. Also, the D72 has an internal memory of 1GB for storing pictures, whereas the A72 comes with just 128MB for the same purpose. The D72 also supports CF cards, whereas the A72...

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK
Having a hard time getting some of my pics to display properly and navigating through the frames menu was not easy to figure out. I thought it would be easy - size the imgages, drag and drop.
Not so, but the frame itself is nice and when I figure it out it will make a great additional to my living room.

The D72 also supports CF cards, whereas the A72 does not.

Perhaps what sets the D72 apart from the affordable DPF-A72 is the quality of the display. At 800x480 pixels, the pixel density of the LCD display is very high, making well exposed photographs pop in front of your eyes. The image processor and the LCD screen (clear-photo LCD) also render colors faithfully, making sure the pictures look as good as they do on the frame as they do on your computer screen. Unlike the D72, the LCD screen of the A72 suffers from oversaturation in the green and yellow region, and the displayed images look somewehat pixelated with the lower resolution screen (480x234).

The D72 costs substantially more than the A72, which probably explains the difference in quality of the LCD panels. However, like the A72, the D72 comes without a USB cable, which is strange given the price of the frame. Although not entirely necessary, the USB cable allows easy and direct management of the photos in the photo frame's memory, so you don't have to copy the files to a memory card and feed it into the frame's memory through the built-in card reader.

Sony indicated that the device has a backlight life of 20,000 hours (before the brightness drops to 50 percent), so you might want to keep the backlight level at around level 5 (the default is 10) and switch the frame off when you are not in the room.

The device also comes with a handy remote control that runs on a single lithium ion battery, so you can control the slideshow and viewing mode without accessing the control buttons on the back of the frame.

I purchased two of these as gifts and spent some time loading images onto each before giving them to others. While the manual was somewhat difficult to interpret, the actual process of getting images onto the frame could not have been easier. I have a mac and use iPhoto for images. The frame screen is 800x480 pixels, so I simply cropped a set of images to those dimensions and exported them as jpegs. I connected the frame using a USB cable (not included) and the frame popped up as an external device. I dragged my images onto the frame, unplugged the USB, and voila the frame rebooted and started displaying my images. Couldn't be easier.

Lots of extra options and settings to customize the experience, I left most of those alone except I did toggle the sony logo off on both of them since the frames look sleeker without the brand name.

Very happy; I'll likely pick up a third one of these for myself.

I liked this frame so much, I bought two. One for my parents and one for my family. The features are great, I like that it can double as a clock. Ease of use is well...easy! Pop in a memory card or plug into a PC via USB to use the 1gb of on board memory. Picture quality only slightly suffers when a picture outside the native display dimensions is loaded up. When a cropped picture for this frame is displayed, the results are spectacular. For a bigger room you probably want to get a bigger frame, but as an accent or in a smaller room I recommend this frame without hesitation.

5.0 out of 5 stars Can't beat Sony quality., February 1, 2010

We had some very bad luck last year with two different digital picture frames we recieved for Christmas, one a Westinghouse and the other some weird brand. They both died within a very short period of time. Westinghouse would not honor the warranty because we didn't have a receipt. We tossed them both in the trash! I wanted to give one to my husband for his office as a Christmas present this year and I started researching these things online. This Sony was very highly rated with an excellent warranty, so I purchased it with confidence. So far, so good, it's working flawlessly. The picture quality couldn' be sharper and it was very easy to set up. It was a little more expensive than other brands, but you get what you pay for. We're completely pleased!

Loaded over 500 family pics and sent them to grandma. She loves the pics and also uses it as a night lite in clock mode. She learned how to use it on her own.

4.0 out of 5 stars Classy Look, But A Littly Clumsy For Older Folks To Operate, September 19, 2010

I selected this Sony pic frame after spending a goodly couple 3 hrs or so agonizing over the poor reviews of almost all the others on the market including other Sonys. I must say I was pleased with the product out of the box and the packing/presentation was very good. The unit operated well and for the most part displayed all of the some 3200 pics on the Xd card quite well. One issue I found was that after spending a good deal of time editing the pics I wanted to put on the card for max size (300K or less worked very well) and correct orientation, the frame still managed to display a very few of them incorrectly even though I had spent a lot of time identifying and orienting a few dogs and cats from sideways to vertical. It's as though the frame detected my changes and changed them back?! Anyway, this was only a few pics and nothing to blow fuses over. Secondly, the remote control uses the popular (these days) membrane type of button which caused my elderly mom (and ME!) to struggle to get it to communicate with the frame. A lot of re-positioning of the remote and multiple presses of the hard-to-detect closure of the membrane bubble-buttons to know if you're actually making a press or not. I understand the value of a sealed button, but if it only successfully communicates to the frame maybe 2-3 out of 4 presses most of the time it gets a bit frustrating. The alternated on-the-unit controls seem OK, but are very awkward to use being on the back and almost impossible to read or know the proper orientation for left-right-up and down. Anyway, I'm pleased that once the unit is running correctly in the mode you want, one can sit back and enjoy the presentation, but I was a little embarrassed trying to encourage my 86-year-old mom to "play with it" when I had a lot of trouble myself--and I'm a retired electronics/computer professional.

5.0 out of 5 stars My lovely office desk digital photo frame, August 25, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DPF-D72 7-Inch LCD WVGA 16:10 Photo Frame (Black) (Electronics)
I had many 7" digital photo frames for my office desk in the past. Yes, I only look for 7" because my goal is seeing my family pictures with a small frame when taking rest at work . After trying many differnet brands such as Coby, eMtion, Philip, and Viewsonic. Sony DPF-F72 is the one setting on my office desk in the end. The reasons are: 1. Resolution 800x480, it makes huge difference on the photo quality comparing with other 480x234 frames. 2. iPhone style rotation, you can turn the frame when you see a portrial photo, and DPF-F72 will auto rotate it. 3. Clock and calendar, you can also set the frame showing all on the same page or you can swap them manually per remote control. On the other hand, DPF-F72 gives you photo frame, clock, and calendar. I get a clean organized desk. :)

5.0 out of 5 stars 7" Sony photo frame, August 7, 2010

Sony DPF-D70 7-inch Digital Photo Frame

I have purchased two of these frames. The first one as a gift for my daughter. It was so great I bought another one for my mother.

The pictures were, sharp and not distorted. The menu was easy to follow and installing the photos was simple. It even allows you to schedule "on" and "off" time frames, so the photo frame turns off at night (or whenever you want it too)and starts back up in the morning.

I did have to buy a larger memory card for my daughter's frame. I think I put close to 400 pictures on hers. But again, the process was easy.
