The HD1000's screen is not as nice as the previous, fluorescent-backlit model. That model had a smooth, seamless picture with no visible pixels, and photos looked natural on it. This screen has noticeable pixels, and colors tend to be garish (especially redness in faces) with no ability to control it.

I returned this frame for the Sony DPF-XR100, which is far better. The entire product is more mature and nicer to use (buttons, menus, etc.). But the increase in image quality is dramatic. Compared to the HD1000, the XR100 is much smoother and more 3D-appearing. Plus, there is an ability to reduce the color saturation (the "Portrait" picture setting) that makes photos look more natural and less cartoonish. If you're reading this review, go for the XR100 - you won't be sorry.

I purchased the Sony DPF-HD1000 specifically because it is advertised as having a 10.1" diagonally meaasured screen, I wanted nothing less. Most of the reviews were very positive and influenced my decision to buy the unit. When I unpacked the unit I immediately thought that the frame looked a little small to have a 10.1" screen. I measured the screen and found it to be 9.1" diagonally, not 10.1". I measured it several times, even using a second tape measure and had another person verify my findings. Can you believe this, Sony's response was that the screen is 10.1", but, the VISIBLE screen is 9.1". Wow!
The picture quality is sharp, as one would expect with a smaller screen. The unit does not always display the photos in order even though the prompted command tells it to do so.
Bottom line is that the on line Sony rep. was perfectly satisfied with his lame explination.

Very nice frame and remote control. Love that it can show 14 megapixel photos & 1080i videos taken from my Sony NEX 5 camera without a hitch or delay - that's both jpeg and the raw .arw formats too. The front 'sony' can be turned off, and the detailed scheduling of when the frames goes on/off in 30min intervals is pretty neat (you can have it go on and off multiple times..say morning hours, and evening only). I now started using Lightroom to export my photos to a usb stick so the frame stays put (if buying a usb stick for this frame only, buy one of the small sized ones as a large/regular [say 2" long] will be seen on the right side about a quarter inch).

My only two wishlist to add to this well built frame would be what Kodak offers, which is the email to frame functionality, or wifi so you can simply send photos over your wifi.

The remote control is fun to use when you first get it to skip ahead and program the frame. It's main use for now is to simply delete a photo or multiple photos.

I have digital frames all over my house. I needed one for my office but I didn't want to spend a lot of money. So I started out trying the frames on Amazon in the $50-$75 range. Couldn't get any one of them (I tried 4) to do anything consistently, or play the file formats they claimed they would. So I had to bite the bullet and spend the extra money to get a real frame. And so far worth every penny. It plays all of the file formats it claims, without skipping a beat. I have the frame set to play each photo for 3 seconds. And it does flawlessly. I have it set to shuffle my over 1500 photos and it is the FIRST frame that actually makes it to the 2012 pictures. Every other frame I have will throw a newer photo in here and there but always seems to "gravitate" to certain pictures over and over. Not this frame. So as I sit here in my office working at my desk getting to enjoy my photos from the 1980s until current day it brings the biggest smile to my face. WORTH EVERY PENNY. The only hitch I have come across is that the frame did not recognize my VIDEO directory on the SD card. So when I press the Index button (as instructed) to play my video they were not found. Once I moved them into the same directory on my SD card as my pictures, the videos were there. But it wasn't feasible to scroll through over 1500 photos to find the video. So I moved the video files only to the internal memory and when I want to view a video I just switch the source and no problem. I also have my frame set to come on at 7am Monday through Friday and off at 4pm. Have not had any issues!

My wife just bought this unit for my birthday. I am not familiar with what other units/options are available so difficult for me to compare. What I can say is that the unit has nice color, brightness/contrast and picture quality. It is easy to use and load photos into its internal memory. The quality of the frame is very nice.

The things I would suggest to Sony to improve:

- The audio at its lowest setting is too loud. When you remove/lose power to the unit, the unit loses some of your settings and defaults to having audio on and screen interval at default setting. So if you have the unit at your office and set the unit for no audio, you might come in one morning and find the unit blasting your audio files.

- The fit-to-Screen does not expand every photo to fill the screen, depending on photo resolutions.

- Video files can only be played from external memory card and not USB stick or internal memory. When you plug in a memory card with a video it will play the video automatically but no way to have it switch between audio and video files on the same memory stick.

- The audio on MP4 files is very low.
