so far so good best earbud/phone mic combo i've found.,

the ex300ip seem to me to be the alternate solution for the klipsch s4i. I wanted something that sounded as good as the s4i's w a bit more bass and better mic placement. this is the best I could find so far. I think the sound betters the s4i slightly but more importantly the mic is up closer on the chord like the orig earpbuds (except it's on the left not right which is a bit odd).I would've kept the s4i's if the mic was placed better but people complained too much about the noise and that sometimes I sounded like i was in a tunnel or talking thru a tin can. remote on s4i is better. I've tried almost everything with 3 button remote. btw. the sony 38i are also good for a cheaper pair but 300's sound much better UPDATE THEY BROKE! aug 24th.

I bought a W800i when it first came out and Sony provided relatively great in-ear phones for it. Rich bass and good treble. Since moving to an iPhone I struggled to find a good headphone set that also controlled the audio controls. I first tried the Shure SE210MPA, and they really lacked bass or they were defective. Returned them because, for their price, I expect a better QA job.Next up I tried the Griffin SmartTalk along with the old Sony headphones from the W800i, and this seemed like a decent compromise... until the Griffin wiring became frayed internally at the cord and tip point and shorted out in only a few months. Seems it's a common flaw for those guys with that product and some others. After the SmartTalk, I ordered the Klipsch S4i, and while their treble range was impressive the bass was just nearly non-existant (almost like the Shure unit) in comparison to my phones from the W800i. How is that the cheap headphones that came with my old phone is beating the pants off these $70 - $140 alternatives?? Finally, Sony announced the DR-EX300iP and I ordered them. Got a defective unit (buttons worked exactly once), returned to [...] (bought via Amazon), and the replacements have been working flawlessly for weeks now, and finally after too much money I have found a great set of headphones for my iPhone. Had these been around two years ago, I would have stuck with Sony. Spend the money and buy these, don't waste your money on anything else. Also I should note that I never tried the Ultimate Ears product, they may or may not be a great choice too.

Nice highs & strong bass; weak mids,

This is a pretty good pair of headphones. Build quality is nice and the iPhone functionality works nicely. They do an excellent job of blocking external sound, which is nice when I'm on the commuter train (why do I always sit near loud talkers?). The enclosed carrying pouch is a useful accessory. In terms of sound quality, here's what I found:- Bass: Strong. A little overpowering depending on what you're listening too. Cannot be entirely toned down with the iPhone EQ (see below). - Highs: As clean and crisp as you're likely to find in this price range. - Mids: Weak and somewhat muddy. It's as if the EQ is set to "Rock" mode and neglects the mid tones. These are great for listening to some music, but are a mixed bag overall. For example, when I'm listening to jazz there clarity and separation of instruments is definitely there, but the sax is lacking in soul and warmth. When I put on some classic Dylan, some songs can sound a little muddy and dull. I think this is probably the same with a lot of other ear buds in this price range, as a lot of them are bass-heavy. A note about audio books: I spend a lot of time listening to audio books on the train, and the overpowering bass and highs (no matter what setting the EQ is on) distracts from the listening experience. I should be hearing a clear mid-tone voice, but instead hear one bass voice overlaid by a weaker mid voice overlaid by a shrill treble voice (the S's can be a little raspy here). It's strange quasi-echo chamber experience that I just can't get used to. Not terrible, but a spoken voice should be a smooth mid tone that is not dominated by bass and treble. OVERALL, this is a good pair of headphones for the money. Comfortable, functional, and pretty good sound quality (if you like bass). I decided to return these and go with a more expensive set by Etymotic research, which deliver higher quality sound and a flatter tonal balance (equal bass, mids, and highs), which is better for the type of music I listen to and for audio books.
