1.0 out of 5 stars Nice while they worked
I did a lot of research before deciding on these headphones. I was looking for a replacement for the stock headphones that came with my iPhone that would stay in my ears better and allow for more outside noise reduction with the same remote functionality. I have had great luck with Shure headphones but didn't feel like making that kind of investment. These absolutely did...

I think the sound betters the s4i slightly but more importantly the mic is up closer on the chord like the orig earpbuds (except it's on the left not right which is a bit odd).

I would've kept the s4i's if the mic was placed better but people complained too much about the noise and that sometimes I sounded like i was in a tunnel or talking thru a tin can. remote on s4i is better.

I've tried almost everything with 3 button remote. btw.

the sony 38i are also good for a cheaper pair but 300's sound much better

UPDATE THEY BROKE!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great headphones, Better than the Klipsch S4i, May 18, 2010

I bought a W800i when it first came out and Sony provided relatively great in-ear phones for it. Rich bass and good treble. Since moving to an iPhone I struggled to find a good headphone set that also controlled the audio controls. I first tried the Shure SE210MPA, and they really lacked bass or they were defective. Returned them because, for their price, I expect a better QA job.

Next up I tried the Griffin SmartTalk along with the old Sony headphones from the W800i, and this seemed like a decent compromise... until the Griffin wiring became frayed internally at the cord and tip point and shorted out in only a few months. Seems it's a common flaw for those guys with that product and some others.

After the SmartTalk, I ordered the Klipsch S4i, and while their treble range was impressive the bass was just nearly non-existant (almost like the Shure unit) in comparison to my phones from the W800i. How is that the cheap headphones that came with my old phone is beating the pants off these $70 - $140 alternatives??

Finally, Sony announced the DR-EX300iP and I ordered them. Got a defective unit (buttons worked exactly once), returned to [...] (bought via Amazon), and the replacements have been working flawlessly for weeks now, and finally after too much money I have found a great set of headphones for my iPhone. Had these been around two years ago, I would have stuck with Sony. Spend the money and buy these, don't waste your money on anything else.

Also I should note that I never tried the Ultimate Ears product, they may or may not be a great choice too.

4.0 out of 5 stars Nice highs & strong bass; weak mids, November 30, 2010

This is a pretty good pair of headphones. Build quality is nice and the iPhone functionality works nicely. They do an excellent job of blocking external sound, which is nice when I'm on the commuter train (why do I always sit near loud talkers?). The enclosed carrying pouch is a useful accessory. In terms of sound quality, here's what I found:

- Bass: Strong. A little overpowering depending on what you're listening too. Cannot be entirely toned down with the iPhone EQ (see below).

- Highs: As clean and crisp as you're likely to find in this price range.

- Mids: Weak and somewhat muddy. It's as if the EQ is set to "Rock" mode and neglects the mid tones.

These are great for listening to some music, but are a mixed bag overall. For example, when I'm listening to jazz there clarity and separation of instruments is definitely there, but the sax is lacking in soul and warmth. When I put on some classic Dylan, some songs can sound a little muddy and dull. I think this is probably the same with a lot of other ear buds in this price range, as a lot of them are bass-heavy.

A note about audio books: I spend a lot of time listening to audio books on the train, and the overpowering bass and highs (no matter what setting the EQ is on) distracts from the listening experience. I should be hearing a clear mid-tone voice, but instead hear one bass voice overlaid by a weaker mid voice overlaid by a shrill treble voice (the S's can be a little raspy here). It's strange quasi-echo chamber experience that I just can't get used to. Not terrible, but a spoken voice should be a smooth mid tone that is not dominated by bass and treble.

OVERALL, this is a good pair of headphones for the money. Comfortable, functional, and pretty good sound quality (if you like bass). I decided to return these and go with a more expensive set by Etymotic research, which deliver higher quality sound and a flatter tonal balance (equal bass, mids, and highs), which is better for the type of music I listen to and for audio books.

I've tried a few different brands of headphones for my iPhone 4 and was about to spend a LOT of money on something else. Then I found these and I'm glad I gave them a try. The sound quality is excellent, very clear and vibrant sound reproduction. I love the built in controls on the left cord that mimic the original Apple headphones. I'm extremely pleased with my purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars The best headphone(earbuds) for iPhone 4, June 11, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DREX300iP Headphones (Electronics)
I have been shopping for a better headphone(earbuds) for iPhone 4 for quite a while, especially after WHO lists mobile phone use in the same "carcinogenic hazard" category as lead, engine exhaust and chloroform recently.

Now I think I have got what I wanted: Sony DR-EX300iP

(1). DR-EX300iP delivers very rich base, the major factor for me when come to choose a headphone.

The DR-EX300iP frequency response range is 5 - 24000 Hz. It feels as good as Sony MDR-Ex500LP (5 - 25000 Hz) I bought before, if not better. The base is so rich that for a good music with a lots of base, you will feel the music is alive. Try Brian Culbertson's "Take Your Time", pay attention to the beginning of the piece and you will understand why I think most premium headphones on the market are not even close.

(2). The remote control/microphone works fine.

-Volume +/-, works fine.

-Center button plays/pauses, double click to go to the next track, works fine.

-Center button triple click, to go back to previous track, sometimes seems hard to apply and sometimes mess up the track play order, which is similar to other phones, like the default Apple headphones. This may be an iPhone's design issue too. Therefore I feel DR-EX300iP is as good as others for the center button triple click.

-Center button starts/ends a phone call, works fine.

Here you can find the spec for DR-EX300iP on Sony's website.

Hope these help if you are looking for a premium iPhone 4 headphone.

5.0 out of 5 stars the Sony EX300ip : are Incredible..., June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DREX300iP Headphones (Electronics)
So I bought the following from AMAZON with hopes of finding one pair that would be better than the stock I POD ear-buds. all in one order....

1. SONY DR-EX300ip top of the line Sony w volume control.

2. SONY EX38ip mid range Sony w volume control.

3. JVC HA-FR50-p Marshmallow remote

1. the Sony EX300ip : are Incredible..... The BASS and HIGHS are 100% distortion free at all volume levels, the EFFICIENCY : A+, is awesome at half volume they feel and sound much louder then any thing I've heard. the clarity of the sound is Monitor studio quality. you can listen to these at full volume and you will not feel any fatigue. if you want the better than BOSE sound at half the price look no further...

2. The SONY EX38ip : are Great, The BASS and HIGHS are 80% distortion free which is very good; the stock Apple ear-buds are about 60% distortion free. So these are fantastic for the money, the bass is clean up to %70 volume and then begins to break up a little... EFFICIENCY : B+, to hear loud music you need to crank the volume level past 80% levels, at 80% you hear the same thing that you hear with the Sony EX300ipa at 50%. I don't want to say anything negative about These, but they seem like they were built with some resistance in the wires or the drivers..but for $27 bucks these are FANTASTIC...

3. JVC HA-FR50-p - Marshmallow remote : are Amazing.....The BASS and HIGHS are 95% distortion free which is very good; the bass is clean up to %95 volume and then begins to break up a little. and becomes a little harsh to deal with causing a little fatigue. EFFICIENCY : A+, to hear loud music you only need to crank it up to 60% volume and they sound like a you have a 8" sub stuck to the back of your head...simply fantastic Bass response...for $27 they reproduce an amazing clear mesmerizing sound that will absolutely rock your world....

A little about me: I have been in the hobby of building clean competition quality Car Sound systems for 20 years, I only use Diamond Audio AMPS and MB-Quart components.

I am very happy with all 3 sets....not a dud in the bunch....

NOTE : I bought two pairs from the apple store and returned both; a Sennheiser Adidas PMX 680i and a pair of Philips headphones, " Both Horrible sounding, they had no bass , no highs, sound was muted and distorted ". I did however love the incredible sounding BOSE at the local Bose store, I didn't buy the Bose because I though there has to be something that sounds better for a better price.

5.0 out of 5 stars Remote works with 2010 MacBook Pro!, August 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DREX300iP Headphones (Electronics)
The sound quality is quite good and I consider these headphones are at a value price.

Here's a neat surprise: I tried these out with my laptop - a 17" mid 2009 Macbook pro...

The remote functions all work: volume up/down/pause, next and previous song.

Not too surprisingly, the mbpro doesn't see the audio from the inline microphone.

5.0 out of 5 stars These are great, don't hesitate, March 7, 2011

I have had 6 or so different pair of earbuds in the last two years. BoseŽMIE2 mobile headset, Ultimate Ears Metro, Dr. Dre beats, apple, and others. They have all had their strengths and weaknesses. Most broke in short order, the Bose I just returned--for the price the quality was hardly better than the stock apple ear buds.

These Sony are the best by far. Best sound, fit and work perfectly with the iphone 4 and have the exact same functionality. Not to mention they are about 1/2 the price of some of the mentioned. I haven't had them long and can't speak to durability.

1.0 out of 5 stars Nice while they worked, January 17, 2012
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

These absolutely did the trick at lower price point. I was able to mow the yard and vacuum while listening to music and they are more than adequate for calls. Everything was fine until today. The up volume button no longer clicks and it will not adjust the volume up. The main button and down volume still work. I called Sony and was given the 90 day warranty spiel and that nothing could be done but take them to an authorized Sony repair center. I only called because I was about two weeks beyond the 90 day warranty and I thought Sony might make some sort of concession but they chose to let me go away dissatisfied.

While they worked these headphones were fine and performed as expected. I cannot recommend them from my experience. Take your $70 and give it to Klipsch or one of the other (probably superior) alternatives!

5.0 out of 5 stars Solid performance, October 2, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DREX300iP Headphones (Electronics)
Let me preface this with the fact that I have never written a review. I'll keep it short.

They are a great value for the the money. When shopping for ear buds, look at the frequency response for the range of treble and bass (Hertz). Frequency response tells the tale, not reviews which are subjective. These had much better HZ than most ear buds over $100. I use them every day in the gym. They need to be slightly adjusted every so often, but nothing annoying. I've had Bose before. Sony ear buds sound just as good and actually stay in your ears.

I love the iPod controls on the cord. It works flawlessly.

Amazon offers the best price too.
