I recently had to switch out my Philips SPD2143 which had died a rather odd, premature death.

This drive performs as advertised and is actually about 5-6% faster (based on a burn session utilizing the same ISO file) than the Philips drive although both were spec'ed at 20x. It's responsive and amazingly quiet even at full burn speed.

I would highly recommend this drive for anyone looking for a reasonably affordable replacement or new drive. The price is a little higher than some of the bargains that you can find, but you do get what you pay for in terms of longevity.

I purchased this product as part of a backup/archival strategy that required daily burning to DVD-RAM using automated backup software and monthly archival burning to DVD+R. One of my priorities was that the product be highly reliable, and I was willing to pay more with the hope that I would get better quality for my money.

I have not been disappointed. This product has worked flawlessly for over two months now - not a single problem!

By the way, I never installed any of the included software. Windows recognizes DVD-RAM as just another drive so backups are no problem. I downloaded freeware to cover my archiving needs.

I replaced my drives because of SENSE CODE ERRORS when I tried to burn discs and it solved all my problems!

Basic computer user with Windows XP on a HP computer........
After researching a few burners I bought 2 of the Sony DRU842A units to replace my old internal drives. I was able to install them myself and they both work great. I have been playing and burning on both drives without a problem. The directions were basic so I used my computer manual to show me how to replace the internal drives.

I like the free software that was included but some of it is only good for 30 days. (Maybe all of it, not sure).

Overall good drives that work without problems, so far.

**Update, I have been doing a lot of burning without any errors or problems. I burn music to TDK CD-R, photos to TDK DVD+R and music videos to Memorex DVD+R DL (dual layer discs). I love the free software "NERO" for burning and ripping. When I copy a disc I go to BACKUP and it will show the progress as it copies the disc, including layer 1 and layer 2 on dual layer discs.
Everything I do on these drives works great!
