4.0 out of 5 stars Fast, Slim, Most Important...It's Portable!
I've been searching for a slim external drive and being portable. There are tons out there being external, a few claims to be slim. This Sony takes the cake! It is extremely light comprared to other external drive. Speed of burning isn't too bad. The only complain is it would be nice to be able to use USB power supply rather than having to carry the power block around as...

3.0 out of 5 stars Only Difference from DRXS70U/R ... drumroll please: the Nero SW version
Full disclosure: I don't own this, but soon shall.

I saw the /R version [DRXS70U/R] (selling here at Amazon for far more than this model) at my local electronics discounter -- and from comparing what the box for that model says, the only difference from this version is that the /R version has the Nero v8 essentials software. As this is a MS-Windows-only...

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Altermative to Macbook Air Superdrive, April 27, 2008

This unit is only slightly larger than the Air's optional Superdrive and has all of same functionality but with one additional feature that can either be considered a plus or a minus: It is powered by an external power supply. Because of this feature, it can be plugged into a USB hub - unlike the Air's Superdrive which requires the modified USB port on the Air to run, and therefore monopolizes the only USB port present. Using the Sony, I can have my DVD drive, iPhone, a portable hard drive, and a media card reader plugged in simultaneously, which is quite important to me. As a bonus, the Sony's silver face and black case also blend with the Apple's design reasonably well, meaning that your desk will still look stylish!

This is a great product for a good price. It's small enough to fit in a laptop bag and carry around without even noticing. It is barely bigger than a CD, and less than half inch thick. The guys over at J&R
Music and Computer World were efficient and a reliable. They had quick service.

5.0 out of 5 stars so happy!, June 3, 2008
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
It worked "out of the box". I bought it for a Fujitsu Lifebook mini that had no CD drive. Plugged the drive into the USB port, XP's hardware wizard id'd it, and that was enough. Didn't bother with the fancy software.

Upon reception the device ( Sony DRXS70U External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive ) worked right out of the box, I am using an XP pro system and the unit was recognized upon connection. I have used it to burn some data dvds and it was fine and as quick as USB 2 device can be.

2.0 out of 5 stars Didn't work with my mac, September 16, 2008
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
I don't know why but it didn't work with my Mac. I have OS 10.4.11. I called Tiger Direct and I called Apple and both couldn't figure out why it didn't work even though it says on the box that it's Mac compatible. Oh well. I returned it and got credit right away.

3.0 out of 5 stars Only Difference from DRXS70U/R ... drumroll please: the Nero SW version, August 11, 2008

As this is a MS-Windows-only device, and any OS version beginning with XP supports burning CDs (DVDs?) directly, you can decide if that's worth the extra bucks.

Hope this helped a bit. Thanks for reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Portable CD/DVD, July 1, 2008

The Sony DRXS70U is an excellent portable CD/DVD drive. It is slim and compact and, more importantly, speeds up copying discs considerably. Copying from one drive to a second is much faster than copying from a disc to the hard drive then back to a new disc. It is also a must-have accessory for mini-notebooks, e.g. ASUA Eee PC900, which don't have built-in optical drives. I recommend it.

The only thing that would make this drive better is if it was powered off of the USB port. It's made by Sony. It's quality. What more do you want?

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good, July 30, 2008

Was able to plug 'n play without software. Very necessary for the Eee PC 901. Read the disc quickly. Haven't tried to burn anything yet. Very light and portable. Bought a case I thought was suggested for it, but totally didn't fit so I had to return the case. Will probably buy a new one.
