5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Acer Aspire One user
It seems like everyone and his brother is getting this to use with an Acer Aspire One.

Well, it works fine with mine.

When I installed the CentOS/Linux operating system, the installation software didn't automatically recognize the drive, and I had to pick from a list of CentOS's drivers. That was no problem, however.

1.0 out of 5 stars HAS EXTERNAL POWER ADAPTER
I bought this drive since it IS a sony and its SLIM LINE.

The key thing I did not notice? It REQUIRES an external power adapter.

I was planning on using this drive with my soon to be shipped (I hope) acer aspire one, but since it requires an external power adapter, its not nearly as useful as I would have thought.

SO please take...

5.0 out of 5 stars Yet another Acer Aspire One user, November 11, 2008
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U/R External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)

If you're going to use the unit to install a new operating system, or otherwise boot to the unit, you'll appreciate the outside power supply, since the USB ports on the Aspire One aren't powered until a few seconds into boot-up. By then the bios would have decided that no DVD was connected, and would be booting from the hard drive.

I found that out the hard way with a USB-powered unit made by LG, which is why I went for the Sony instead. That and several other problems with the LG.

Best for the Aspire One would be a USB-powered unit with an optional external power supply.

This is a first-rate drive, at a reasonable price.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Portable Drive., October 2, 2008
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U/R External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
Yes it would be nice to have this thing powered off the USB Port, but with a small device like the Acer Aspire One (which I also bought this for), it would not be practical. So far, I've only used it to watch some movies on the Acer, this worked great. I plan to use it as a backup/second DVD Drive with my other systems. Though I've not tested all features, I've not had any issues with it and it seems sturdy enough given it's size.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great for Macbook Air, February 6, 2009
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U/R External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
I just bought a second Macbook Air and did not the external Apple drive that I bought with this first one because it would not work connected to a USB hub. This drive from Sony works great for my office setup. I have all USB devices hooked up to a hub and then connected to the ONE USB port on the Macbook Air. Only draw back is that this drive needs external power, but I don't travel with it so I don't care.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cute drive. Very compact, January 24, 2009
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U/R External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
I bought this for my sister and she was very pleased with it. It is very compact and it works, too. It does come with an adapter but that was what we were looking for. Uninterrupted power. Won't give out on you while you're burning DVDs unlike other USB powered drives.

SO please take note of this before you buy this...I will have to try it out with the acer before I make a final judgment, but in terms of storage and space, to take this WITH adapter on a trip with the acer and its adapter is already a lot more bulk than I would like..

but it looks real pretty!

DVD worked correctly out of box. Easy to set up, comes with an AC adapter, and usb cable. I am using it with a Laptop running Windows XP, and Windows recognized the device right away. Easy to use with the enclosed Nero software. Of course if you want the deluxe version of Nero you are directed to the web site for an upgrade.

Nice Product from Sony. I did have some trouble setting it up using Windows Vista. I could get video but no sound. I had to update my drivers on my video and sound card and now it works fine. Nice overall. 4 stars. Not much in manuals. Not much in troubleshooting info either.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best external USB drive which I found, April 30, 2009
This review is from: Sony DRXS70U/R External Portable Slim-Line USB 2.0 DVD Drive (Personal Computers)
The USB2 port on my laptop cannot power an external drive so this was perfect, having an external power supply. It's built solid and performs very well. Nice feel to it, works similar to a laptop style drive. It's slim and rugged, but will add a small amount of weight to your laptop case to lug around. As usual, I do not install any of the included software but use the freeware Image Burn program instead - it works when Nero 6 failed. Switching from XP to OSX, the drive is quite fast on a mac and does not need any special software or drivers. Of all the external DVD burners I looked at, this was the best built and supported the largest range of formats. Having had many poor experiences with TigerDirect, I suggest to use a quality retailer when placing your order.
