I've been through quite a few cameras in my lifetime and this is by far THE best SLR-like camera in it's class.

The picture quality and is superb.. the clarity of the Carl Zeiss lens is beyond breathtaking. Taking pictures of my daughter, it was so clear that you can clearly see the subtle differences in the hair color and separation. the background defocus is very good (you have to zoom in on the portrait) although you won't get like for like with a fixed 50mm lens. In low light the camera performed well. In HDR mode, it worked okay but wasn't great. I had to use the built in flash to compensate.

The auto focus could use some improvement and probably the weakest link here. At times, the camera will try and hunt and you can see and hear it laboring trying to focus correctly. Because of this, there were a few shots that came out less than ideal.

One common problem with the Sony cameras (especially with the DSC-HX series and the NEXs) is that it can take a few seconds (sometimes it took 6 seconds in Superior Auto mode) to process the image. With the RX10, I didn't notice this lag; shots were captured and took less than a second to process the image.

Battery life, I was able to get about 350 pictures (very little flash and mostly eyepiece) before the battery started complaining.

The weight of this unit is not light but has a good solid feel; I used a hand strap and after a few hours, it felt like a dumbbell.

The on screen LCD navigation has much been improved and more intuitive. In the "P" mode, press the "fn" key and you can use the directional dial to select the setting.

I bought my RX10 from Beach Camera. This is not the first time I bought a camera from them, and won't be the last.

The Sony RX10 is one of the best camera's I've ever had. It shoots great pictures right out of the box for people who just want to use it as a point and shoot. But for the rest of us that are picky when it comes to high quality pictures this is the camera that will compete with DLSR's and with any movie cameras.

The only reason I'm giving a 4 star rating is for the total package. The camera bag is to small for the camera. The two Bower batteries will not eject from the camera and I needed a screw driver to get them out of the camera. I'm glad it came with a Sony battery. The Dvd they sent wasn't helpful for this camera.

Now for the good news when I contacted Amazon about the batteries they immediately ordered me two PHO O batteries that arrived in 2 days and they work just like the Sony battery . Thanks Amazon!

In the end I just want you to know that my first digital camera was a Sony and for some reason the last 18 years I have bought at least 7 other camera and all different brands including my last one which was a Nikon. So when I saw the write up about the RX10 and I told my wife that the camera I liked the best was my first one a Sony I think Ill go back to them and I'm sure glad I did this camera is build like my old 35mm with great quality and the pictures are great.

The camera is fantastic, as already explained in so many reviews. Unfortunately it's also very versatile, or using another adjective, complicated. I've bought the paperback book; I bought the kindle version and downloaded it on my computer; I downloaded also the unofficial Sony manual, still it's a lot of work learning all (if I live that long) possibilities and options the camera is capable of delivering. One setting I very much like is the "Automatic". When you're getting beyond a certain age, as I am, your ambitions decline and you realize that not everything what was important in your youth, such as knowing every detail of your car, camera etc., is really that important.
Accessories: most of the accessories included with the camera are rather useful, especially the two batteries and the external charger. I'm not sure if I ever will need the second 64GB card.

Six or seven weeks and a few hundred pictures later: My opinion of the camera has not changed. I used to have a Sony DSC V3 which I liked very much. Fortunately our daughter wanted it, so I did not have too much of a guilty feeling when I bought the RX10. Most pictures taken in Auto. Most pictures very good. What I really appreciate is the wifi transfer capability. I usually take a few pictures in the morning and put them on my web page showing the weather. With my old camera I took out the stick and inserted the stick in my computer. Not too complicated. With the RX it's a little bit more complicated, so I was looking forward to using the wifi feature. It took me several days of trial and error and reading on the internet until I finally determined that the RX10 and my Norton firewall were incompatible. I disabled the Norton and enabled the Windows firewall and voila, it works.

I moved up from a point and shoot and after a great deal of research decided to try the RX10. I love it!! It is easy to handle and takes beautiful photos. Light weight and only one lense to use. Great for everyday use as well as travel. I am using Auto mode for now. Eventually will learn the other settings. The package deal is a tremendous value. Everything is shipped as described. Only complaint is that the camera bag is too small. For novices, I highly recommend the Photographer's Guide to the Sony DSC-RX10 by Alexander White (availabe from Amazon).
