Hopefully this review will help clear up some confusing things which first-time HDTV owners may face.
I am a first-time HDTV buyer who recently purchased my first medium-level, 32" HDTV (720p, but can receive 1080i). When I first got the T.V. I planned on seeing exceptional visuals for my cable and for my DVD movies. I knew that an HD signal would be needed to truly see an HD quality picture, however, I quickly got frustrated to see that both standard DVDs and regular reception from my basic cable looked pretty pathetic even compared to a standard T.V. This HDTV I purchased looked great in the store, so I knew there was something going on I didn't understand, so here's a quick sample of what I learned and how it relates to this DVD upconverter. All of my DVDs are standard (not Blu-Ray or HD DVD). Using a standard Sony DVD player on my HDTV the picture from DVDs was not good. Color was excellent, but the clarity was not good and the resolution looked poor and had a very 'blocky' look (jaggies). At this point the DVDs actually looked better on a standard TV. Cable reception looked equally bad on the HDTV. Another issue is that when watching a widescreen movie on a 16x9 TV the image will be bigger since the aspect ratio on the 16x9 TV can handle more of the widescreen image. So, on top of the standard DVD having less resolution than a HDTV reproduces, that low-res picture is also being enlarged to fill a 16x9 screen, and as like what happens with the cable, because the HDTV reproduces an excellent image, all the imperfections of a non-HD signal (for both cable and standard DVDs) are in a way being magnified and look worse than on a standard unit. I learned that as far as cable goes, the picture will not look very good unless you have HD through your cable provider (and you are watching an HD broadcast of course). Digital cable channels look decent...somewhere between standard cable and HD. As for playing movies, obviously if you have an HD DVD or a Blu-Ray player you are not going to have an issue with those formats. Even though I planned on signing up for HD stations through my cable I almost took back the HDTV because I have a lot of regular DVDs and wasn't planning to upgrade to Blu-Ray anytime soon. Watching my DVDs the way they were looking from my standard DVD player was not good enough. That's when I looked into an upconverting DVD player (specifically this one). Now, I have read a lot of articles and reviews with people saying that upconverters don't work and others saying it will look just as good as HD or Blu-Ray and both are wrong. After hooking up the upconverter to the HDTV (which was very simple with a HDMI cable and running the 'quick setup') I was watching my DVDs again and was more than pleased and was more than thrilled with the results. For the $120 for a Sony upconverter, it exceeded my expectations (which are pretty high). With the upconverter, my DVDs looked great on the new HDTV. I personally felt that they looked better at 1080i (which my TV will accept) than 720p which is my TV's native resolution. But this may be a matter of taste/preference. I would say with the upconverter the standard DVDs looked much better than they looked on standard TV, and of course the size of the 16x9 screen makes them come alive even more. Is the picture with the upconverter as good as a HD DVD or Blu-Ray disc? No. Is it much better than watching a standard DVD on a standard TV? Absolutely. It really is a perfect in-between if you have quite a library of DVDs and don't plan on doing the Blu-Ray thing for a while, and you will still get a better picture from the DVDs than watching them on a standard TV. In conclusion, while I can only vouch for the specific unit I am writing this review on, I would highly recommend an upconverter without reservation if you find yourself in a similar situation where you have quite a few standard DVDs and are thinking about getting or have already bought a HDTV and are upset by standard DVDs not looking good when being played on a regular DVD player. I would like to point out however that most Blu-Ray players (at least most Sony ones) also will upconvert your standard DVDs, so if you are considering a Blu-Ray player but worried about not being able to play your standard DVDs, not only isn't that an issue, but Sony players I have read up on will also upconvert DVDs for the HDTV (but please check to make sure that the model you are looking at does have upconversion and check to what level is upconverts to (1080i or 1080p)). Hope this helps anyone who is a little confused as I was on their first HDTV experience. As a side note: Some have complained about upconverters not being CD-friendly and I would agree with this in general; the loading tray is somewhat slow, and on some models you can not open the changer tray without stopping play on the current disc. If you are into changing music discs frequently I would recommend getting a separate CD changer just for music discs and then using the upconverter only for movies. This is what I do and it has been perfect and is why I still give this unit 5 stars as an upconverter.

I bought this player about 15 months ago. The picture quality is excellent and having a multidisc changer on an upconvert DVD player was a bonus. One thing that did annoy me from the get go was how long it took for this player to start up and to change disks. The worst part of this player is that it has a major flaw where the disc tray will lock up and there is no way to get it open. I contacted Sony and received some instructions, none of which worked. I searched the internet and found out that other users are having the same problem. Now I have a DVD player that works but I cannot open the tray! I had to unscrew the cover just to get the DVDs out of the player. Buyer beware!

No technical gobbledy-gook,

I'll get right to the point with no hi-tech mumbo-jumbo. This DVD player does exactly what I wanted it to. I like to play various TV show DVD's at different times, but found it a chore taking them in and out of boxes and into the DVD player...waiting for them to load etc...forgetting where I left off when I came back to them.
I plugged this DVD player into my TV in about 30 seconds, just like any other...loaded 5 different discs into the player, and voila! You hit one button to take you to the next DVD on the tray, wait about 30 seconds for loading and there you have it. It was worth the vaery reasonable price I paid.

This was a replacement for an older model Sony Dvd changer which simply wore out in three years of constant usage by a shut in. Has a good front panel display and now incorporates HDMI output. If this one lasts as long as the previous one we will be very happy. Just set it and forget it, can't be beat for convenience. We use it 99% for playing DVD made on the home computer and find it will play -R,+R and +RW DVD equally well. It wont play RAM but who cares?

I hesitated to purchase this product because of the reviews I read regarding how slowly it loads. I like Sony products, the price was right, so I purchased it. Although it is true that it loads slowly, it is not a problem for me. The sound quality and overall performance are excellent.

So far so good. I don't understand why there isn't more 5-disk players out in the market. Why have 1-disk player when you can play 5-disk. I had a RCA that rotated the disk. I like this better. Flat changer instand a stack changer.

We purchased this figuring we could consolidate a needed 5 disk CD player with a quality DVD player. Well the shuffle play for CD's will not play tracks at random from all the loaded disks, but will only play them 1 disk at a time. We had another Sony 5 disk player that would do that. So the random shuffle on this is pointless..... The DVD player can take so long to load that you wonder if it's working. It sometimes will not read a Netflix disk that our other cheaper Magnavox DVD player in the basement will. The playback quality is good, but I question SONY's overall quality anymore........ A little dissapointing.

I love DVD changers that I bought this changer to go with my other Sony DVD changer. The only thing I am disappointed in is the time it takes to load a DVD. My other one does not take long. Both have a little noise when the DVD's are changing; however, it is not that irrating. I would definitely recommend this product to all my family and friends.

Absolute Must Have for HDTV,

First of all, if you have an HDTV (720p or 1080p, doesn't matter) and you do not have an upconverting DVD player and are still playing DVDs from a standard DVD player, stop reading this right now, and go get one. You can get a single disc one for under $50. Given the jump in picture quality, there is no sane reason not to do it.
Okay, now the actual review. I finally decided to pull the trigger this year and replace our 27 inch CRT TV with a flat screen LCD TV (37 LG30, if you care). Because our circa 2002 Sony DVD player topped out at 480p, I decided I should get an upconverting DVD player to take better advantage of the new HDTV. This has been an excellent decision. Superb performance. In fact, I could sum up this review by saying I now have no plans to move up to Blu-Ray. The difference between what I have now with this DVD player and Blu-Ray would not be very significant. Add in the extra costs of Blu-Ray and still limited selection, including future online streaming, and it's an easy call. Frankly, I'm amazed they sell upconverting DVD players -- why would consumers buy into Blu-Ray when they could get 90-95% of the picture quality with an upconverting DVD player? Just for fun, I hooked up both the old DVD and new DVD player and toggled back and forth between LOTR DVDs to compare. The upconverting player was by far superior on our new 37' HDTV. (I suppose the HDMI connection vs. component video makes a slight difference, too.) I got the 5 disc because it is so much more convenient. I don't know why they are so rare -- totally worth the extra $40-50 for the convenience of loading several discs in at once and watching. Finally, yes, loading time was a bit of an annoyance. It is a bit painful to trash my previous no-delay DVD player for one that takes longer, but the HD picture is worth it. I am told Blu-Rays take even longer to load, though, so score another point for upconverting over Blu-Ray. Overall, five stars, possibly the best $109 I've spent this year. |
