6 Month Review of the product...,
By Dave B. (New York, NY United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Sony DVP NC80V/B DVD changer (Electronics)
I purchased this product about 6 months ago, as soon as it came out. I was on the market for a DVD player that provided the most "bang for the buck" and this one matched what I was looking for.Picture Quality: Good (Interlace mode) As I have yet to upgrade on my current TV to HDTV - I can't provide a useful information here on the progressive scan quality of the player but I've been pleased with the quality of interlace scan and once my TV is upgraged to HDTV, it'll be that much better. Sound Quality: Excellent (Movie and Music) Remote: Good Feature: Excellent Build: Good Overall: 4 1/2 Stars

BUY THIS DISC PLAYER,

The SONY DVP-NS755V is an outstanding disc player for the price. I have owned several DVD players in the past, beginning about 4 years ago (since I got into DVDs), but they have all been PANASONICs, this is my first experience with a SONY. First of all, the hook-up was easy and straight forward. Although this is a combination DVD player and SACD player, with multiple outputs, the hook-uo and set up was quick and went off without a hitch. Secondly, the picture quality is great, bar none. The sound on DVDs and CDs are excellent, I can not find any faults to list. Now for the real low down on this player. Although the hook-up options are numerous, you will need to use six high-quality RCA style analog jacks in order to listen to multi-channel SACD sound. Also, this player does have a pair of RCA jacks for devoted CD playback as well as analog DVD output. Then there is the fiber optic Toslink output in order to play the DVDs using an interna digital to analog decoder. All of these jacks cost a lot of money, and I found myself using about $240 worth of jacks to hook this DVD player up to my system. That $240 does include a high quality MONSTER CABLE componet video jact to transfer the video signals to the television. One could forego a set of devoted CD cables, and possibly buy a lower quaility video cable, but no matter how you hook this player up to your system, expect to spend at least $200 for cables.Having said all that, once this bad boy is all hooked up with the fiber optic cable and the multi channel cables, you will have a variety of options of decoding your precious CDs upon playback. Using some audiophile CDs of my favorite bands, I found that this player has extremely quick response times, great sonic quality, and a very wide dynamic range, (all the better to play JIMI HENDRIX). Now for the multichannel low down. The only reason why I even bought this player was to listen to PINK FLOYD DARK SIDE OF THE MOON in glorious multi-channel sound. Let me tell you, the experience of listening to multi-channel SACD is amazing, I can not even find the words to describe the experience. If for no other reason, you should consider this player for the multi-channel SACD playback capability alone. All of the other features are just icing on the cake.As a little footnote. It has to be remembered that to play multi-channel SACDs, you must have a receiver with at least six channel analog input, as well as six discreet amplifiers. For this purpose I used a SONY STR-DE895 (which I will rate in a separate review.)

The Awesome Sony DVPNS755V,

This is my first DVD player, and I couldn't be happier. The picture quality on our 32" Sony Trinitron monitor is superb, but what really blows me away is the sound. It has onboard Dolby Digital & DTS 5.1 channel decoders, and I have these connected to an A/V Reciever with 5.1 inputs and 5 channels of amplification at 100 watts each. With front and rear speakers, as well as a center speaker, the surround sound is incredible. The unit will also play Super Audio CD's (SACD), and three demo SACD's are included with the player. These not only sound out of this world, but along with the manual allow you to really tweak the system until you have everything just right from an audio standpoint. The onscreen menue allows for lots of customizing - you tell the DVD player the size, placement, and even the distance from the listening area of each speaker, exactly what you have in the system for amplification, the type of TV, and then the unit is optimized for your exact situation. It has all the outputs you could imagine including coaxial and optical digital, component video, line out video, and S-video outputs. I am using the S-video connection to the monitor with excellent results. You can adjust and cusomize both sound and picture to suit your personal taste. It would take the entire manual to give you the complete story on this remarkable piece of equipment, but it is an audio/video geek's dream machine.

Great picture quality plus SACD sound capability.,

Sony makes great DVD players and this model is no exception. Furthermore, it is a progressive scan player which will give enhanced picture quality with a high-definition TV. You may not have HD TV yet but you probably will have one within a year or two, at which time you'll want your DVD player to have progressive scan capability. So, if you're buying a DVD player now, why not get one with progressive scan, like this Sony, and be prepared for HD TV?Another terrific feature of this model is that it plays Super Audio CDs. Most modern DVD players play CDs as well as DVDs, but very few have the capability to play SACDs which are the highest fidelity audio medium currently available. And the circuitry which allows this unit to play SACDs actually improves the sound of regular CDs. So if you want both the best picture and the best sound a progressive scan player with SACD capability is the one to get. This Sony has both of these features at a very reasonable price.

As close to a universal surround audio player as I've found,
This review is from: Sony DVP NC80V/B DVD changer (Electronics)
I'll defer to the other reviews of the video quality, since I bought this unit for it's audio capabilities.I've collected a number of titles in various surround formats - from DVDs with Dolby Digital, DTS & PCM soundtracks to SACDs & the older, DTS CDs. The built in decoder makes playing this hodgepodge of formats incredibly simple. Just put it in & hit play. There are playback options if you want to exercise them, but you don't HAVE to. All players should work this simply. I was pleasantly surprised to find that the 2-ch output even downmixes titles with no stereo track - specifically DTS CDs. The only format this player doesn't specifically handle is DVD-A with it's high-res multichannel tracks, but since every DVD-A I've bought has a Dolby Digital or DTS track, the discs have still been playable, and sound very good on my syetem. This player lets the user focus on the TITLE not the FORMAT... Dark Side of the Moon on SACD, American Beauty in Dolby Digital on DVD, or Abraxas on DTS-CD all sound great through this deck. All players should do this - but as far as I can tell, this is the only one that does! That it also plays DVDs & home-burned VCDs is just icing on the cake.

A great progressive-scan DVD player that also plays the customary assortment of CDs, CD-Rs, and CD-RWs. It is also a multichannel SACD player. NO DIGITAL OUTPUT FOR SACD section ! You can use only the analog RCA connection!!I used digital coaxial cable for the DVD/CD connection to my receiver, for instance, and an assortment of analog cables for the SACD connection via the six-channel analog input. |
