5.0 out of 5 stars Everything I expected and more
I expected a high-quality DVD player that would flawlessly play any video DVD I threw at it.

It plays DVD -R, +R, -RW, +RW, +R DL and -VR discs recorded on my Sony burner. (-VR discs allow for multiple play lists without affecting the original recording, great for sports broadcast recordings).

It also plays CDs, CDrs and CDRWs with both normal CD...

3.0 out of 5 stars Good player, a few quirks though...
Sound quality is great--I've got two beefs with this though:

1) The viewing angle on the display is terrible--you cannot see anything if you are too high, too low, or too much at an angle.

2) The buttons on the unit are cheap and don't respond well. The remote is OK, but the ones on the unit stink.

It also plays CDs, CDrs and CDRWs with both normal CD audio and jpg/mp3 data, as expected.

What I didn't expect and is most welcome is that it also plays jpgs and mp3s from data DVDs. This is perfect for slideshows of high-quality digital pictures or extended music of high-quality mp3 collections.

Other positives include:

The remote control is well designed with the right buttons in the right places and a comfortable fit in the hand.

Front panel controls are enough for most tasks. 5 buttons allow direct access to each disc. Play, pause and stop buttons function as expected with the addition of a a dual function stop button. One press of the stop button stops playback and allows for resumption of play from that disc. A second press of the button clears the disc from the "resume playback" memory.

The chapter forward and reverse buttons also have a second function. Pressing the button and letting off performs a chapter skip. Pressing the button and holding it down for moment initiates the forward or reverse scan at 1x speed.

All discs except the one being played can be exchanged without disturbing playback using the Exchange button to expose two discs and the Disc Skip button to expose the second set of discs once the first has been exposed.

The only negatives I have are a blindingly bright blue light on the front panel when the player is idle, the front panel digital display is difficult to see from an angle and the unit is large, as deep as it is wide.

But those are very minor issues compared to the flexibility, quality and price of this unit. If it lasts as long as my other Sony electronics products I will be very happy, indeed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing DVD Player for the Price, September 23, 2005
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Sony DVP-NC80V/S SACD DVD Changer, Silver (Electronics)
I purchased this DVD player because as a technology gadget collector/lover a 5 disk DVD player was of course on my list of upgrades to my small home theatre. The thing that attracted me to this particular dvd player was the price, and the color.

When I recieved the player in the mail and set it up I realized that I had definately picked a winner. The picture quality is amazing and there are a ton of different options to customize each movie watching experience, and it's not like dvd players I've had in the past where every option seems to look or sound excactly the same. Each one is different and unique in it's own way, and there's even an option to change the picture color to suit the movie.

My only complaint about the player is it's size and the lack of navigational buttons on the interface. The player itself is huge, too big to fit on top of my tv, not that it's too thick, but it's length surprised me. To give you a better understanding of the size I will describe it this way: 3 playstation ones could easily and comfortable fit on top of the player. As far as navigational buttons go, I was surprised to find that the only buttons on the front panel of the player itself are the standard eject, play, pause, stop, scene skip, disc skip, and disc 1,2,3,4,5 buttons. There is no way to access or play any special fetures without the remote.

Overall, this is a great player and I wouldn't trade it in for anyother.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best Value Multi-Disc Player, December 4, 2005

After going thru 2 "higher-end" Yamaha multi-disc players within a few years, I decided to try this lower priced Sony unit, and so far I am thrilled with the performance. This player has everything the Yamaha had (my last one was C940) with the added bonus that if I find myself shopping for a new one in 12 months, at least it was only $120 instead of $400 that was spent. The MP3 capability is the one I value the most; I love making my own 5-6 hour compilations (and you can just leave 2-3 dics in your spare slots with these multi-disc models) plus this Sony model allows for MP3 DVD's, the Yamaha would only recognize 100-song MP3 CD's, and that was a $400 C940 unit (which broke in 13 months).

The sony DVPNC80V/S,produces a very good picture and sound..The remote is user friendly,in my opinion...There are other brands to choose from, but their quality, cannot hold a candle to the sony player...The machine is rather large and deep...But you get top notch performance...The disc loading system is fast and responsive...The sony is a honey of a machine and i highly recommend it...Please only purchase from a retailer, with a good/refund/exchage policy of at least 30 days..."Enjoy" thank you stewart L.

I needed to replace my old RCA 5-disc changer and was surprised to find a combo CD/DVD player by Sony for so cheap. So far it has been great, but I agree with the 2 complaints aired by Jimbo Jones:

1) The viewing angle on the display is terrible because it is set deep behind the glass. You basically have to have it almost at eye level in order to read it.

2) The buttons on the unit don't respond well. I have not tried the remote yest as I plan to use a universal.

5.0 out of 5 stars I can't complain, December 22, 2007
This review is from: Sony DVP-NC80V/S SACD DVD Changer, Silver (Electronics)
Well this can be billed as a durability review as I've had this model for about three years now and it's never given me a problem. The only mild complaint I have about it is that it's a little slow on the controls and the remote has to have an almost completely uninterrupted line of sight.

But other than that, this one gets an A+. I do alot of avi movie downloading and converting, this player has never failed to play a rip so it's hard to beat that.

For todays standards, some might think it's a bit oversized but it's still not bad at all. I like this player, it does what I want and what I need and it's difinately reliable.

Speaking of the remote control, there's nothing I can think of that can't be done--angle, subtitles, fast forward at 3 different speeds, etc. It's awfully hard to beat the price as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Can't shuffle between DVDs, September 27, 2006
This review is from: Sony DVP-NC80V/S SACD DVD Changer, Silver (Electronics)
I bought this machine for one purpose -- continuously play multiple DVDs and shuffle chapters on all discs at my office reception room. This machine does not do that. I returned the machine, and purchased an RCA DVD changer. It does not shuffle between DVDs either. Did anyone here find one that shuffles between DVDs?

3.0 out of 5 stars No Multi Disc Shuffle, May 31, 2006
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)

I can't believe this 5-disc player cannot be set to shuffle songs from all 5 discs. You can only shuffle songs within one cd. If I would have known this I never would have bought it. What good is it to have a multi-disc player when it can't shuffle between different discs?

An acceptable DVD player, although it does take much longer than any other DVD player I've even seen to switch, load, or play discs. However, mine just stopped playing discs after about 7 months. Plan on a warranty exchange or two if you buy a Sony DVD player.
