5.0 out of 5 stars Great Picture!
I purchased this DVD player a few months ago along with the rest of my home theater system. I investigated every aspect of the player and compared it with others in the same price class. Without a doubt the Sony DVP-NS300S is superior. The Phillips and Panasonic do not produce quite the same, tight picture. Plus, I read that the Sony DVD players read scratched DVDs...

3.0 out of 5 stars NS300DVP
Very simple to set up and operate. Picture is great, and great features. Only two complaints... the Sony will not play CD-R, and digital picture cd's, and the remote only controls the TV volume (no channel control etc.)

I purchased this DVD player a few months ago along with the rest of my home theater system. I investigated every aspect of the player and compared it with others in the same price class. Without a doubt the Sony DVP-NS300S is superior. The Phillips and Panasonic do not produce quite the same, tight picture. Plus, I read that the Sony DVD players read scratched DVDs the best [just a note if you rent more than buy]. I'm not sure about the other review, but I have no trouble playing CD-Rs, but CD-RWs do not play.

5.0 out of 5 stars Entry-level DVD Player from Sony Really Rocks, April 9, 2002

What first attracted me about this player is its appearance. Slim, neat-looking and cool silver finish. Has several useful features which includes, Block Noise Reduction which improves the picture on screen, a very fine sound (96kHz 24Bit), component video output, digital outputs... At its price range, it surely has several flaws. Inability to play CD-Rs, MP3s.. lack of numeric keys on the remote and a noisy dvd/tray mechanism. What it lacks in features will surely be overwhelmingly compensated for by its outstanding picture and fine sound.

4.0 out of 5 stars Quality Basic Player with Exceptional Laser Head, February 21, 2002
By
This review is from: Sony DVP-NS300S DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
I bought my DVD player to play DVD movies very well - ie. good picture, good sound. I didn't buy it to play 'copied' audio cd's, or MP3's so I dont care if this unit doesn't do that. There are DVD players out there that will do all that & more for the same price as this Sony - but at the end of the day ask yourself 'are they cutting corners to give me all that?'. The Sony is a stylish slim-line machine WHICH does the main job it was intended to - play dvd's (it does play purchased audio cd's, by the way). Ask yourself this question before buying your DVD Player - Is a machine with basic features but a quality laser important - or a machine with a mediocre laser and stacks of mostly unncessary features (eg. zoom) important?

5.0 out of 5 stars The NS300 can actually read CD-R's, October 15, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DVP-NS300S DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
I'm just writing to correct some information written by other reviewers... This DVD player does indeed read CD-R's, I have verified it with burned VCD's I have created. (But not SVCD)

I suppose wether or not it works may depend on the brand of CD-R media you are using, but at least the Sony CD-R's media works flawlessly for me.

Overall this is a great player for the price. It's easy to use, has great picture quality, and I have yet to find a DVD movie that it will freeze on. (Except when caused by disc scratches) I'm very satisfied.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent!, May 22, 2002
This review is from: Sony DVP-NS300S DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
This is probably one of the best DVD players on the market. The picture is crystal clear and the sound is extremely good. This DVD player exceeds the required standards! I strongly recommend this DVD player to prospective customers who want a high quality player for a good price. In my view, Sony is the best when it comes to DVDs and VCRs. Buy this player and you will not be disappointed!

1.0 out of 5 stars Do you rent DVDs?, May 17, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DVP-NS300S DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
If you rent DVDs, this is not for you. The player gets stuck even for minor scratches and dust. I was able to play the same DVDs on PlayStation and also on other players. If looks could mislead, this is it.

3.0 out of 5 stars Nice DVD player, but not worth the price~, January 8, 2002

It's design and the brand name caught my eyes at the first glance. And I picked it because it supports VCD as well, but later I found out my brother's (less expensive) DVD player from a different infamous manufacturer (...) can do more than this sony does. Especially this sony does not support CDR videos, which really makes me wanna return it. I am not saying this sony (...), it does it's job and very realiable, but if you are planning to play some CDRs or want more "unnecessary features", then go for a different one.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player, December 31, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony DVP-NS300S DVD Player (Silver) (Electronics)
Bought this DVD player as an open-box item for $... Great deal. Plays DVD's flawlessly, build quality much better than the highly touted Panasonic RV-31K. Excellent video and audio.
Ample outbound connections (S-Video, Component video etc.)
I don't care that it doesn't play CD-R's, CD-RW's and MP3's.... This is a DVD player and a GREAT one at that! Buy a CD player to play audio CD's.....By the way, this unit DOES play certain CD-R's. Try it, you'll like it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great DVD Player!, July 26, 2005

My university's library has a bunch of these players in the media room for personal viewing. What I like about this player so much is that it looks sleek, and willing to play your movies! You can navigate DVD menus without a remote - just use the joystick-like control on the unit (easy to use, BTW). I've watched many movies on that machine (like "Airplane!," "Back to the Future Trilogy," "Raiders of the Lost Ark," "The Incredibles," etc.) and watched a couple of movies in Spanish sound with English subtitles. Best of all, when the DVD changes layers on a dual-layered disc, it's just a one-second pause - no "check for scratches" warning or anything! It's too bad this player was pulled from production a few years ago but oh well.
