The Sony DVP-NS500V packs an extra punch by not only playing CDs and DVDs, but also enhanced Super Audio CDs, which deliver richer, more nuanced audio than traditional music discs. The unit also plays CD-R/RW, DVD Audio, DVD-R/RW, and Video CD formats for added music and movie options, and it includes a multichannel management system that controls such features as channel balance, channel levels, and bass redirection. Among its video attributes is a digital video enhancer that improves contrast and picture detail, along with SmoothScan and SmoothSlow modes that allow users to crisply search for their favorite scenes.

Other features include built-in Dolby Digital and DTS decoding and a 5.1-channel output, along with coaxial and optical digital outputs for connecting to a digital receiver. The unit also includes a component video output, two S-video outputs, and two composite video outputs.

I have a... Sony DVD player. Sony claims a 1 year part/90 day labor warranty. First, the machine simply stopped working after 5 months. Second, to send it in for warranty repair, Sony wants $92.00 for labor, upfront, plus I have to pay for the cost to ship the item. They don't assess the problem and then give you an estimate, permitting you to decide whether or not you want to go through with a repair. Third, when I noted that the cost to repair closely approaches the cost of a new machine, their customer service representative told me I should have purchased the extended warranty.

My suggestion is, buy a more reliable product, not a Sony. Check out what the warranty, when you purchase. Select a product with 1 year parts and labor. Otherwise, find out what the manufacturer charges for warranty service.

Watch out for deceptive warranty policies.

SONY HAS MADE AN AFFORDABLE SACD PLAYER, THAT ALSO PLAYS DVD'S. THE ABSOLUTE SOUND MAGAZINE SAYS, " THE SONY NS500V IS A FINE INTERLACED DVD PLAYER, A COMPETENT CD PLAYER, AND AN ASTONISHINGLY
GOOD INTRODUCTION TO THE WORLD OF SACD RECORDINGS. SACD'S ARE LIKE LIVE MUSIC, COMPELLING AND ADDICTIVE". IT'S HARD NOT TO AGREE WITH THE WORLD'S LEADING HI-FI MAGAZINE, BUT THEY ARE SO RIGHT, THIS MACHINE IS AWESOME AND WELL WORTH THE MONEY AT THIS LOWER COST.
