4.0 out of 5 stars Nice Product May 4, 2010

I ordered this mic/receiver for my kodak zi8 (note: the customer service people at Kodak told me the zi8 is not capable of using a wireless mic. They were wrong). I've been playing around with it for the last few weeks. It is REALLY nice. Although the mic is much bigger than a traditional wireless lapel mic, it's no big deal to me. Not to mention this thing is pretty sensitive. You can wear it on your pant pocket or some other "hidden" spot and it still picks up your voice no problem. I cannot comment on the battery life since I have not used it for an extended period of time. The distance is AMAZING. I have easily exceeded the 150ft max range and had no problems. At times the communication between receiver and mic is lost from a further distance if the line-of-sight is lost but if you find the line-of-sight it usually picks it up right away. In close range, 50 feet, I've never lost communication. This goes through walls no problem. I highly recommend this product. I've used other more expensive wireless mic systems in the past and this one is every bit as good for what I need (shooting conversations from a distance of about 10-50ft). Nice product. I would have given it 5 stars but I haven't determined the battery life. Comes with everything you need to set up but depending on your application and/or camera, you may need to spend a few extra bucks on adapters. I spent about $10 bucks to set this system up with my zi8 so I can use it per my needs. I like this product!

Update 1-8-2013
I have two updates below in the "comments" section. This product is holding up very well for my use. My only real concern was the plastic attachments (clips) to hold the mic/receiver on shirt, jacket, etc.

4.0 out of 5 stars As Close to Perfect (but NOT Quite) September 24, 2013
Length: 5:39 Mins
**EDIT 10/05/2013: I just saw that you can have two different ways to adjust sound. In addition to using the level adjust on the camera, there is an audio adjustment on both the mic and the receiver. The receiver's sound toggle will adjust the level coming into the camera. But alas, whenever it's shut off, it resets. And there's no way to see what that level is, without getting additional gear. I have to ask my subject to say something while I record, but toggling down a couple clicks does the trick. Without that, the levels on my Nikon D7000 can't knock the input levels enough. If the earpieces are connected to both the mic for the subject, and the receiver connects with camera as the other earpiece is plugged in an output jack, you can have dialog with your subject, instead of having to shout. It's silver (I like a low-profile black)**

Here's a quick video test I did while at my car in a very loud area where I work. I've used the Bluetooth wireless to capture sound from people when I can't deal with my Sennheiser EW 112P G3-A omni-directional EW system (they can be a little more tedious with regards to quick journalism capture. With those you have larger packs, but they also have a tethered mic to easily hide the transmitter. My big problem came when trying to cover pro football at Cincinnati, when the MhZ police came by with a warning for me not to use the device. But the NFL doesn't have a ban code for Bluetooth!

I like how the mic can pick up a voice but it can sometimes pick up the white noise if it's loud enough. But the distance I used was 180 feet, and it only hiccups when there's no line-of-sight with the receiver.

After much research, I bought 2 sets of these for a project that I will be video recording, for which I need to place a remote, wireless mic on the presenter. I found some videos on YouTube that demonstrated the use of them before I ordered.

When the devices arrived, I tested them, and was very pleased to find that they work exactly as advertised. I learned that each microphone/receiver pair are "tuned" to each other. You cannot interchange them. (This might be important for someone to know, which is why I mention it.)

I bought two sets, because I read that they go through AAA batteries at the rate of each 2-3 hours. This way I will have a spare set with fresh batteries all ready to go each time the set in use poops out. The receiver and the mic each take one AAA battery.

There are clips on the receiver and the mic, and you can clip the mic on the presenter's collar, lapel, or pocket. The receiver can be clipped onto the harness of your camcorder or other recording device.

These will work with any device that has a microphone jack of the "mini" size.

3.0 out of 5 stars awesome clarity, beware mic noise January 28, 2011

The clarity of this microphone is awesome. I got about 100-125 feet in range (outside, line-of-sight) before it started breaking up, but before that it was crisp and clear. Even in crowded public places where there's bound to be some other bluetooth users, there was no interference, though less range.

You do have to watch where you place the mic so it doesn't pick up any movement noise. For example, if your subject is walking or moving around and the mic is clipped to a pocket or lapel, make sure the mic is not rubbing against anything (clothing, etc.) or you'll pick up that "rubbing against the mic" noise. If your subject is much more active (e.g. kid on stage) or you're using the included armband, it might be harder to avoid that. Add to that the unsightly silver color of the mic that you're bound to see on video, and I'd have to say the packaging of this mic could use some improvement. Perhaps a lapel mic would've been a much better design: smaller and lighter so as not to be prone to rubbing, moving (and seeing.)

5.0 out of 5 stars Works wonderful
This works great both close and at long range. It drowned out traffic background noise, whereas the built-in camcorder microphone picked up that traffic noise in the background.
