5.0 out of 5 stars Performs excellently
I think the review below either received a faulty mic, did not properly attach it to the hot foot, or did not activate its presence on the cameras menu. My product works flawlessy and picks up amazing sound, especially in nature. Highly recommended.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone
Although the sounds it records are very life-like, this microphone's HUGE amount of background hiss makes it totally unusable. I originally bought this microphone for my new Sony DVD camcorder. The result was beautiful video with sound that was reminiscent of a 1960's mono cassette recording with lots of tape hiss. This is not what I expect for a totally digital video...

5.0 out of 5 stars GREAT!, March 24, 2007
This review is from: Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone for DCR-DVD 203, 403, 305, 405, 505 & HDRHC1 Camcorders (Electronics)
Pros:

This mic is great because in a crowded room you can actually hear the one conversation that is being recorded. Without the mic, all you would hear is a multitude of conversations going on at one time. We recorded a surprised birthday party and while we recorded best wishes to the birthday girl, we were next to this massive speaker and the mic picked up the conversation without any interference from the music that was coming from the speaker. I would not have this camera (DCR-DVD 505) without this mic.

Cons:

The blue fuzzy wind buffer that covers the mic is okay for teens but Sony should have put more thought into the mic cover. With that in mind, the mic is still a great product!

The result was beautiful video with sound that was reminiscent of a 1960's mono cassette recording with lots of tape hiss. This is not what I expect for a totally digital video and sound recording. I went back to the original built-in microphone, which has no audible hiss at all, and am much happier.

1.0 out of 5 stars Sony ECM-HQP1 - Surround Sound Microphone, March 3, 2006
This review is from: Sony ECM-HQP1 Surround Sound Microphone for DCR-DVD 203, 403, 305, 405, 505 & HDRHC1 Camcorders (Electronics)
This didn't function up to our expectations and didn't serve our purposes. Unless we were recording one-on-one interviews with the camera/microphone directly on the person we couldn't get good voice reception. In attempting to record a group setting it was of no value. We had to purchase an alternate device.
