Bluetooth Mic. System,
By
This review is from: Sony Wireless Bluetooth Microphone (Electronics)
The Sony Bluetooth mic system's functionality and ease-of-use is consistent with the quality of most Sony products. I use it in the legal profession and so far it has performed to my expectations. If there is a con or a down-side to this particular piece of equipment, I would say that it is the battery usage. I used it on three (3) separate occasions totalling about 4hrs on the same battery. There is a blinking red warning light on both pieces, but you have only a minute of two before it goes dead, so have fresh batteries close by.

Works very good and definatly has a range of 300ft+. As an audio engineer, I will tell you that this mic is very clear and user-friendly. For the price, it is worth it to any one searching for an affordable device with high quality audio! I recommend this product to everyone!

This is a great product. The only two drawbacks are:
* The mic's battery life is too short (about 30-45 minutes is the most I got out of a fresh new battery) * The size of the mic is a bit too big to hide on a subject. You can't avoid having it in the frame and the bright blue light is also not helping hiding it. Would be nice to have an option to attache a wired mic to it so you can have a small neck mic connected to the device and have the device clipped to the belt or something like it on the subject.

I just purchased this unit and I'm pretty satisfied with it. The microphone is about the size of a bic lighter...maybe a little larger and has a clip that can be attached the the person's clothing or to the included elastic armband. The wind screen seems to work well. The hot-shoe adapter that picks up the wireless mic is about 2"x2". I received the unit the night before I needed it and didn't take the time to read it before my morning shoot. I wished I had because the wireless mic can adjusted to 3 different recording modes.
Here's what happened....I was filming a swim team practicing with their coach. As they were swimming laps, the coach was following and commenting on their strengths and weakness. The coach was outfitted with the wireless mic and it worked flawlessly. As he walked to the end of the pool...100' away from me, his voice never faltered. It sounded great. Then, while still filming, I got the idea to change the audio from the "Single" (wireless mic only) setting to the "Mix 5.1 ch" (camera's audio w/ the wireless mic used as a 'center' microphone) setting. I didn't realize what I had just done but it was obvious during playback. While reviewing the video, I got to the point where I changed the audio settings and I was so disappointed. I could no longer hear the coach at the other end of the pool... I heard more of the camera's audio and little if none of the coach. I should have left it on the "Single" setting. It was my own fault but a good lesson learned. As the other reviewers stated, the microphone's battery life is short so bring a spare or two with you. I had about 5-7 minutes warning from the low battery indicator before it died. Overall, I would definitely recommend this unit.

Almost perfect solution for better sound,

The sound recording ability on my camcorder was adequate for providing background sounds to holiday videos but when I wanted to carry out interviews the subjects voice wasn't sufficiently prominent. Wireless microphones can be expensive and although this product isn't cheap it does perform well. There is a blue indicator light on both transmitter and receiver as a visual indication this connection is active. At first I thought this was a benefit but its quite bright if you are recording you can get it shining on the subject especially when using the clip to fix the mic to a jacket or shirt. I'm going to cover with tape this in future. Apart from this tiny niggle the device is easy to set up and is quickly dismantled fitting in a soft bag supplied. The sound is clear and with both the bluetooth picking up the sound from the subject and the camcorder picking up ambient sound the finished effect is good.

Outstanding range and audio fidelity,

Range was much better than anticipated... as far as 579 feet! See video on YouTube (ECM-HW2 lilipuha).
Quality excellent. I use this to record cello in lessons and concerts. Does a fine job in 5.1 mode. Wind sock REALLY works... and hides that bright blue light without diminishing essential sound quality. Interesting that using Vegas Movie Studio Platinum 9.0, the Mic channel is the "Front Left & Right" channels, rather than the Center channel as described in the literature. Used this mic in presence of 802-11n LAN without adverse effect.

I have used this with a brand new Sony Handycam several times. It works great! I can pick up my daughter's skating coach from at least 100 meters away, maybe more, with perfect clarity. Even on a windy day, the wind sock protects the microphone and allows crystal clear sound to come through.

this is a superb product the microphone is really sensitive it records really crisp sound it has different modes a single and a dual(mic on the cam and the mic itself) and dual 5.1( similar to dual but in 5.1 ch) the microphone uses one "AAA" battery and gives around 45 minutes to half an hour the receiver uses the battery on the camera.I think it requires sony active accessory shoe so if you plan to purchase it for some other camera do consult a sales representative or something.so keep some extra batteries.. has a range of about90 meters in an open area without any distortion which is really good. the best part is the mic and the receiver has an option in whcih you can listen to the opposite person like if you have the cam with the receiver then you can hear the person with the mic and the person with the mic can hear you this makes a really cheap wireless communication offcoarse not as good as those expensive ones.
this is a definitely good product for its purpose this is not for interviews where you need ambient noise reduction because this absorb all the ambient sound. but if you are looking to use it for interviews and get some natural sounds from the environment then its a good deal

So far this has worked just as advertised. I haven't used it a lot yet, but when I have it's been just what I needed. The range of the wireless mic is excellent, and the quality of the recordings throughout the range is very good. Haven't had a chance to monitor battery life. Easy to use and set up. Need to cover the blue "connected" light on the mic. It draws your eyes to that and not the subject you're recording.

Did Not Work for Me,

I do not fault the Sony ECM-HW2 for not working in my particular application - amplifying the sound from a medical device. I do fault the Sony technical representative who told me that the bluetooth microphone that is part of the ECM-HW2 would successfully pair with a Sony bluetooth amplifier. It would not.
