The sound is much better with this mic and it eliminates all the noise from the lens autofocus. I have used this for interviews and the sound is much clearer with this mic. The only problem is that attaching the mic is really awkward and it seems as though you are going to break off the hot shoe cover when tightening it onto the camera.

One of the BIGGEST problems with this mic is that while it is a better mic than the internal one, no matter what...an on-camera mic is always going to sound bad from more than a few feet away. This is because good audio comes from HIGH SIGNAL to noise ratio (in layman's terms, basically: the closer the mic is to the source, the better). Even a $1000 mic sounds like garbage when held 20ft from the source, for example.

This mic will sound to most people much like the original mic. However, they ARE different. This one is definitely an improvement, albeit slight. The improvements are that it rejects SOME sound from the left and right and behind. It's not magical though, it still hears things that are said off axis, but they are limited. The mics are also higher quality so they sound more natural than the camera mics.

However, if you're expecting to use this to film anything more than 5ft from the camera - it's not going to sound much better. In fact, I found that while hand-holding, this mic is worse because the shock mounts inside the microphone do not do a very good job of reducing handling noise and as a result, you get a lot of "rumbling"

So if you're looking to greatly improve audio, the answer is ALWAYS get the microphone close to the subject. Microphone quality matters little until you correct that error. For the NEX this means getting an adapter (there's a website that sells a modified version of this that you can plug a 3.5mm mic into) OR simply recording onto something like an H2n or H4 from Zoom and syncing it in post production.

If you're just trying to improve your home videos, I don't know that this will do it either.

Here's where this thing shines:

- Better scratch audio, especially in noisy environments.

OK sound in a small package. True to form, a good product is delivered the Sony way - expensive and proprietary. The ridiculously impractical connector for the mike/flash is simply a pain to plug into, and ensures that you have to buy Sony's overpriced accessories.
That's really too bad, because the NEX cameras can be really amazing performers.

I received this mic and promptly did a test. I had my music playing and a medium low volume behind the camera about 4 ft away ( mic. set to 90 deg). Then stood 8' in front of the camera and talked in a normal tone and volume. The results was the accessory mic cut the background music almost in half but also cut my voice about 10 percent. I suspect the drop in my voice was all the bounce in my small home office being cut out. My voice was clearly much richer and normal sounding.
This unit comes with a plastic clamshell type case shaped to fit the mic pretty accurately.

I'm not a technical expert so please look on this from an amateurs point of view. This unit is compact and attaches by a screw in to my NEX-5. I used it to record a national conference and was staggered at how clear it picked up the speakers narration. Powered from the camera its easy to attach and comes with a small protective plastic case. For any video narrative its a great addition. Since the NEX-5 hasd only one screw in shoe it can't be used with the flash unit, but then why would you use a flash with video anyway? Highly recommended if doing video.

If you like to use your camera for shooting video, this is a great accessory. Just be careful when you're attaching it, because it has a tendency to be a little awkward and feel like you're going to break it, or your camera, when you're plugging it in.

Once it's in, however, the sound quality is definitely superior, and it eliminates camera noises from being able to be heard in your movie.

I like this product a lot BUT if you plan to use the flip up screen as I did, you won't have any luck. The 180 degree screen is rendered useless by this product.
