3.0 out of 5 stars Great phone...but not for everyone.
First of all, let me say this is a great phone. I will note a few important things:

1. It is a smaaal phone. The buttons are small. If you have a large hand or fingers, its going to be hard to grasp the phone properly. I have average hands and it was hard for me!

2. No Speakerphone...this is a huge downside.

3. There is an online...

First of all, I would like to say that I'm a Nokia enthusiast. When I started looking for a cell phone, I 'knew' I would get a Nokia of some sort (I've only owned Nokias before and I liked them) -- but I didn't get one this time (and I'm glad).
I bought this phone because some of my friends in Europe had it, and after playing with it for about 2-months, I came back to the States this summer and bought my own.
This phone is great. It is loaded with features. The user interface is well designed and easy to use. I think Sony put a lot of thought into this. Everything is right where you need it. There are some people who don't like the design of the buttons. I really can't see why. They are not hard to press, the numbers and letters are actually under the buttons, so they will never come off due to wear. The screen is awesome - very clear, very bright - that's what sony is known for after all.
What I like the most about this phone is that it has both InfraRed and BlueTooth. I own a laptop and syncronizing my phone with it is a snap. I can upload and download pictures, ringtones, themes, games, I mean everything, without even buying the cable for it. If you don't have an IR port on your computer, you can buy a USB-IR adapter for less then 6 bucks on ebay. I also syncronized it with my pda through infrared - so I put over 200 contacts on my phone automatically, just by pressing 2 buttons.
And another important aspect - this phone is small! One of the reasons why I don't like flip-phones is that once you fold them, they become pretty thick. (I also don't like them b/c everyone in the States has one - Europe and Asia is the opposite)This phone, despite having IR, BlueTooth and a camera, is still very slim. All of my friends, even those who own flip phones, love my phone.
Reception is very good too. I get 3 bars in the basement of our management building -- that's 2 FLOORS UNDERGROUND (not just one like in a house).
Battery last me a little over 3 days, but it charges in a little over an hour.
The only thing I don't like about this phone is the mediocare camera. It needs better resolution. But since I rarely use it (I would be happier if it didn't have a camera b/c it would be even slimmer), that doesn't bother me.

BOTTOM LINE: If you are looking for a very small phone, with many handy features, awesome conncetivity, and an original design, this is the phone for you. It really stands out.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad, but I still miss my Nokia, July 6, 2004
By
This review is from: Sony Ericsson T637 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
I had a Nokia 3595 before and it was a lot simpler to use. But this sony ericsson has a lot new features that I never had, like the camera, internet, and instant messaging (all of which i don't use.)

I was going to buy the t616 but it was more expensive than this one. I think the t616 is more aesthetically appealing, but this phone is slightly smaller.

I got this phone because I wanted something with Bluetooth to sync with my Apple Powerbook's Address book. This phone did the job, but it doesn't let you store that many phone numbers per person. Like for a few people I had over 5 numbers for them (Work, College, Home, Weekend home, etc...) and the phone only keeps 3 and ditches the rest. =/

I agree with the other guy who said the default ringtones are strange, they are! But thanks to bluetooth, you can easily download new ones and themes as well onto your computer and then transfer them to your computer. And you don't have to pay extra for these.

I miss my nokia, but I gave this a four because bluetooth just rocks. It's more confusing as first, but you get used to it pretty quick.

MY BIGGEST COMPLAINT - however - is that it's NOT loud. [I have turned off increasing ring, volume @ loudest] My nokia was VERY loud and I could hear it ring when I'm in the middle of city and there's traffic, buses, and whatnot blaring their horns. Also, the vibrations are not as strong as the Nokia's. I can barely feel it in my pocket vibrating.

I also work at a computer and my ears are plugged into my ipod. I rely on my phone to be loud, but it's not. =/

Oh well, other than that, it's a GREAT phone :)

Been using this phone for 3 weeks now and I love it, i got one of those screen protector things, definitely get one! The menu is easy once you get used to the keys, since I have had nokia's before, the menu/navigation is slightly different. I also got a bluetooth USB adapter, which makes transferring ringtones & pictures as easy as ever. I just transferred my entire phonebook through outlook in one easy click. The camera takes ok-ok pictures, nothing close to a one megapixel digicam. I've seen my friends samsung e715 and this screen is waaaay better. The colors are more vivid. The only drawback is no MP3/voice ringers if you're into that, but the polyphonic ringtones in my opinion are more than enough, you can transfer any midi file (instrumental) to your phone. You can even assign pictures to your contacts so that their face shows up when they call. Supercool phone, would buy it again anytime! Remember to charge it overnight the first time though!

4.0 out of 5 stars Worth it, September 18, 2004

The phone itself is wonderful! Good reception, easy to use,
BlueTooth! It uses java for some applications and games which is
cool! It also has ICQ and AIM which is a plus. Another cool feature is Music DJ, in which you can create your own polyphonic tunes (midi). One button push will get you online. Your phonebook has space for more than one phone number (home, work mobile) plus it has a space for email. You can set up special ring tones for different people in your phone book. You can also take a picture of that contact and the picture will pop up when that person calls. It is a cool idea to have a single push of a button to turn on the camera and allow you to email the picture to someone. After saving the picture, you can save it as wallpaper for your camera and you can send it as a MMS, or via bluetooth or via infrared (IR). The camera is not that good. People need to be 3-4 feet away to get a clear picture of their face. Any further than 4 feet and nothing is clear (feature-wise). But I did'nt buy the phone for the camera quality. The camera is a perk. If you want to buy a Sony Ericsson for the camera quality, I'd purchase the S710a which has a 1.3 Megapixel built into it, or the Z500a which does video and 3x zoom.
The my previous phone was a Sony Ericsson T68i. The reasons I stayed with Sony Ericsson is: Easy to use, lots of options, and the biggest reason: BlueTooth! Wireless is the way to go!!!
I gave this camera 4 stars because it rocks. If the camera would
have been better, it would have gotten 5 stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars Every day gets better with this phone, July 11, 2004

This review is from: Sony Ericsson T637 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
Hi - this is a great phone. Bluetooth syncs with my mac perfectly. All functions I need are available intuitively and easily. It's the details with this phone that I love: the rounded buttons which allow even my huge hands to type with ease, the strong construction, the bright (and great in sunlight) TFT screen, the ability for it to use my calling cards and enter the numbers for me, the SMS and data counters, the "post-it" notes feature, the alarm, the games.

The big stuff - RF and sound are great. Battery life I have found to be good (they clam something like 300 hours in the specs - but I would say more like 150 - still this is pretty good). The camera is only decent - but I don't consider this a big deal - its for fun and it achieves that goal fine. The menus are fast and access to numbers is easy.

The phone is small and stylish, is smaller than my old T720 - if you include the antenna which you must! (ouch!).

Obviously you can pay more and get better phones - but for the great price its selling for now (net $50 return with new 1yr contract), I don't think you can go wrong, especially if you want a candy-bar style.

best of luck!
Rob

5.0 out of 5 stars Sony Ericsson T637, January 19, 2005
This review is from: Sony Ericsson T637 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
This is the best cell phone I have ever owned. It lights up brightly with large digits that you can see without glasses. It goes 5-6 days without charging for light use. Although I ordered cases, they are unnecessary as the phone is small enough to comfortably and inconspicuously fit in any front pant pocket. It has no protruding antenna to break off and require replacement. When talking from Houston to Lubbock, I actually have to hold it away from my ear because of loudness. It even has a camera in its small size. Best of all, it is logical and user friendly with frequently-used operations requiring only 1 keystroke or 2 at the most. Although available in after market, Sony could have easily made a dual charger to handle a spare change-out battery.

4.0 out of 5 stars Pretty good phone!, March 5, 2005

I purchased this phone after the screen on my Nokia 3200 cracked :(. This is a great phone and works really well with Cingular's GSM Network. I wish it had a speakerphone but the clarity between the jabra bluetooth headset I got and the phone is excellent. AIM on the phone is sloooow but I had the exact problem on my Nokia so I think it might be Cingular's network. Another thing is that I stored all my numbers on my SIM card but this phone cannot read them straight off the card. You first have to copy the numbers to the phonebook and that was a little tedious. However it only took about 10 minutes to copy 20+ numbers to the phone's memory.

The calendar and calculator are excellenty designed and are very easy to use. The alarm clock is also great in that you can schedule a recurring alarm for each day of the week.

The camera does take grainy pictures and requires just the right amount of light so things do not look washed out or like an ultrasound.

Cingular's phone service is excellent as well. I haven't had any dropped calls or calls that have gone straight to voicemail. Cingular's customer service, like some carriers, is almost hit and miss. Sometimes I call and get someone extremely knowledgable and helpful and then sometimes I will get someone who does not understand what I'm asking. While those situations have gotten better it does seem that a few reps could use more training about the data capabilities of Cingular phones. I was having trouble sending pictures when I first got the T637 and I was transferred to a Tier 1 tech then a Tier II tech. It turned out to be that my phone needed a download but it took over an hour for them to figure that out.

I am pleased with this phone, and Cingular, but I wish it had a speakerphone and that Cingular would improve the speed of the AIM service. Tmobile's AIM was always quick, when I had coverage that is.

5.0 out of 5 stars Awesome phone, March 1, 2005
By
This review is from: Sony Ericsson T637 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
This is a great phone with excellent battery life. I can usually go four or five days without having to recharge the battery. That's just awesome. The ringer volume is loud and the screen is bright. You'll never have to pay for a ringtone or game again thanks to the excellent Bluetooth support.

Performance of Java games is sluggish - that's my only complaint. You may want to spend some time searching for Mophun games, as those are much more responsive and smooth.

A lot of the negative reviews here make reference to the 'online' button being too-easily-pushed. That may be true, but let me tell you something. This isn't a flip-phone. This is a 'candy-bar' style phone. Non-flip-phones usually have a mechanism that 'locks' the keypad when the phone isn't in use so that random buttons don't get pushed when they're in your pocket or purse or whatever.

If you're too stupid to turn this lock on when you're not using the phone (or to enable the auto-lock function) then you don't deserve to own a mobile phone, period.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good phone, Great Service, so-so camera quality, December 16, 2004

I just purchased this phone when I switched from MetroPCS to Cingular's family share plan. This is the only phone that caught my attention besides the Semiens s66 or whatever. I hate flip phones personally and it seems that everyone in america has one. I saw this phone online and immediately wanted one. When I saw it in person it was a lot smaller than I expected it to be, but still a faily nice size. I love the liquid black color and the clear buttons. It looks a lot better them my Nokia 3586 and feels like its built a little better. The menus are done very well and the screen is bright and colorful. The sound on this phone is also very good and the included ringtones do not sound like something from a 1980's arcade game. The main reason I bought this phone was for the bluetooth technology that works in my Acura TL.

My only two complaints are the poor graphic quality of the camera phone and the sometimes hard to use joystick. I didn't buy this phone for the camera, but it is a pretty cool feature nontheless. I took snapshots of things around me, and found that the graphic quality is at most average. You can take a picture of someone (wife, girlfriend etc.) and put them in your address book, so everytime they call, their picture will come up. I tried that, and was not very impressed with the picture quality. Also when that person calls, the picture you have stored for that person has the top of it cut off. I guess its good for face shots only, but not full body shots. Also the small joystick in the middle of the phone can be very hard to use and frustrating. You have to be very deliberate in moving it around and pressing it down or you will end up doing something in the phone that you did not want to do. If you want to press "enter", you have to really press down on the joystick or the cursor will move up or down instead. This is very apparant when playing the included mini golf game, many times I have thought I pressed down on the joystick, but it did not register and the power bar kept going up and up. Thankfully you can also use the button next to the joystick to press "enter", but that that can be cumbersome and counterintuitive.

Overall its the coolest phone I have had in looks and functionality. I suggest getting a screen protector for it, because it can get scratched very easily.

MetroPCS constantly dropped calls, and I was lucky if I got even one bar while sitting at my 2nd floor desk at work and forget about having any signal in an elevator. I have only had Cingular for a few days, but their service is very good in comparison; I usually get full bar strength, and even get 3 bars in an elevator.

Cingular is recommended as well as the phone if you hate flip phones and are not to concerned about camera phone picture quality.

5.0 out of 5 stars SE gives us something good!, December 15, 2004
This review is from: Sony Ericsson T637 Phone (AT&T) (Wireless Phone)
I just got this phone from my friend and I must say that I was first skeptical about the phone and how it would perform against my Motorola v551 but I must say it's a great performer. I tested out the internal antenna of the phone and I think that the reception on this is superior than that of the v551. In areas where my old phone had minimial signal, I had 3 bars. The speaker phone sounds good and the battery life of this phone kicks major butt. The only disappointment that you might have is that there is no holster for these "candy bar" type phones. You basically are left out and if you're not careful you will scratch the screen like I did. My keys were in the same pocket and I forgot about the delicate display. I will be buying PDA clear covers for the screen soon. I learned my lesson the hard way. As for the camera, it's pretty fuzzy and I don't like it. The bluetooth syncs up with my computer fine and works wonders when combined with the right headset. I've gotten no drop calls or anything but sometimes the buttons can me small for big fingers. Get this phone...it'll be worth it!
