A GREAT Fingerprint Biometric Reader. Works fine with MAC's OS X 10.4, 10.5, and WINDOWS!, June 15, 2009
This review is from: Sony FIU600 Puppy Fingerprint Identity Device for Windows with Securesuit Software (Personal Computers)
My company has been using these Puppy devices for several years at work and I have always had great luck with them. In the three years we have used them I've never had a single failure on any of our readers.
The readers usually recognize the finger scan within a second or less and you go on with your day. We have our machines all set to paranoid mode and they auto lock after 5 minutes of non-use. This really saves time as you don't have to keep typing your username and password all the time to log back in. Just place your finger in the reader and BAM! you are right back where you left off. Misreads happen once in awhile, maybe once every 50 times when you don't place your finger on the reader properly and it gets a bad scan.
Now for our super paranoid machines we have two-factor authentication setup with the puppy and so when you want to use those you have to first scan your finger, then enter your username and password before you can use it. That way even if someone had your finger and you were unconscious or your password but no finger they wouldn't get very far without both the fingerprint AND the password.
As a funny side note the scanner actually stores your fingerprints inside the scanner itself in an encrypted form and not on your computer so there is less chance of hacking or failure to recognize the fingerprint.
It works for well for us and we wouldn't be without them at this point.
We use them on both the Mac with PPC's and Intel processors under OS X 10.4.x and 10.5.x (yes there is software and updates for them to work properly under Leopard. You just have to contact the company that made the software for Sony and not Sony itself to get it as Sony Support has no idea what is going on most of the time.
We also have a few machines running Windows XP that we use them with too. I have not tried them with Vista nor do I know if they ever made the software for Vista like they did for XP.
I do like the mac puppy software better than the windows puppy software because of the way it integrates with the mac os, but that is probably just my personal preference.
I don't usually spend my scarce free time posting product reviews but I thought the dearth of decent reviews on this device were uncalled for. Hopefully this review will help someone to make an informed decision to buy one or not.

No matter what I tried it doesn't work for websites. It works great with logon and programs like AIM but if you are looking for something that handles the passwords for all your different websites you should wait for them to get it right.

the product packaging does not purport to support Mac. Our addtional efforts were fruitless and the product was returned.
