After the birth of my son, I wanted a camcorder to record the typical family memories. The goal was to get a camera that had great video quality, a wide-angle lens, able to shoot in a variety of conditions, and was small/easy to use. After owning this camera for a couple of months, I can say that it has definitely met my expectations.

When deciding what camcorder to buy, my experience with digital camcorders was basically nothing other than using the video setting on digital cameras/phones, so I had to do a lot of research just to know what was out there. After doing said research, I realized the situation was pretty typical of lots of technology: each major brand has a very similar product in each price-range and you probably can't go wrong with any of them unless the model just happens to have defects or something. I decided on this camera mainly because of the Sony brand and it having a wide-angle lens and decent internal storage.

Overall, this is a great camcorder. It is exactly what I wanted and there's not much I would change on it.

One warning (and not specific to this camera): if you will be primarily shooting to share over the internet with family and friends and aren't concerned so much with quality/features, you might be better off getting one designed to do that and save a few hundred dollars. Else, for every video you shoot, you'll need to convert it to an internet-friendly format. So, while you may be excited to send a video to grandma right after you shoot it, you'll need to go sit in front of a computer for a while and edit/convert it before doing so...

Positives:
- The quality of the video is great. You can output the videos on the camera to your HDTV with an HDMI cable and you'll definitely be amazed.

- For just basic recording, the camera is easy to use (one button to start recording) and the size of the view-finder makes it easy to tell what you are recording.

- The wide-angle lens pretty much allows you to capture what you see with your eye

- The size of internal storage is more than adequate for a day's outing to the park or similar, even on the best quality. It might come into play while trying to record an entire sporting event or similar though.


Negatives:
- The menus can be somewhat hard to navigate around, both software design-wise and quirks using the touch-screen

- Some software for editing the videos would have been nice to include (or at least a discount?)

- It's not obvious how much storage/battery is remaining, so it's easy to be caught off-guard

This is a nice camera with great functions, however, do not expect same from the body built. It feels more plastic in contrast to previous models. In addition, transition between builtin memory and additional memory (sd or ms) is not as user friendly as the other brands. Does it deserve to be priced for 800 bucks, no.

We had a Samsung 1080i camcorder we bought mid 2010. I thought that was the best camera in the world until we got this one from best buy. The picture is absolutely incredible and the stabilization made it easy to shoot a movie that looks like it was made by a professional. I'm giving it 4 stars because it is very expensive, but so far we love it.
