4.0 out of 5 stars Nice for the price
I bought this to replace my aging Kenwood 5.1 surround system. I chose it primarily because I had recently purchased a Sony Bravia LCD TV, as well as an upgrade DVD player. I bought this to replace my aging Kenwood 5.1 surround system. I chose it primarily because I had recently purchased a Sony Bravia LCD TV, as well as an upgrade DVD player. The set up was smooth and easy. I had one issue with sound quality that turned out to be something I must have accidentally done while playing with the effects settings. The phone support at Sony helped me reset the system and all was well.

Good:

Great sound for the price.
Easy set up.
You can sync it up to work seamlessly with other Sony products & remotes.

Bad (but not that bad, really):

Passive Sub-Woofer (If that sort of thing is important to you)
Speakers wires attach to the unit with special connectors. If they detatch, you could be in for a tricky fix or replacement.
The auto calibration is pretty slick, but it doesn't work all that well. Most people (owners in online forums) end up setting the levels manually.

Overall, I am very satisfied with this purchase. Right for the price, and a good pick for Sony product owners.

[edit] The more I use this product, the more I want to upgrade my rating to 5 stars (can't figure out how to change that). I keep finding more features that make me happy.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good for the price, especially for a small-med room, November 30, 2007

I just picked one of these up for our small family room off of our kitchen. I needed something small as space is tight. Overall, I am pretty impressed with the system considering the price. The sound isnt outstanding but not bad for a $320 system and the connectivity is pretty nice. Hooked everything up quickly and had no HDMI syncing problems at all. Sound isnt as crisp as a more expensive system and it is underpowered but for the price it gives me what I need. I did pair this with some better speakers from an older Sony HTIB and the sound is better. I had to splice the wires due to the proprietary connection but it was worth it. Sound is a bit better than the tiny included speakers but not much.

If I could change anything on this I would: (1) give it more power, at least a 6ohm system, (2) give it a powered sub, and (3) add TrueHD and DTS-MA support. I would have happily paid another $300-400 for these features and I expect to see all of these things standard on high end HTIBs in the next 2 years.

I just got this system two days ago and so far it has exceeded my expectations. The sound quality is amazing and setup was fairly easy. The only way I think it could have been better for me is if my TV were a sony bravia(HDMI control) but I'll live with the extra remote. The only other improvement I could see needed would be an on-screen menu. Yeah, staring at the little display on the unit definately is a little irritating. But its quick. And oh yeah, dont do the auto calibration thing. Big mistake. You can get way better sound if you scroll through the menus and spend the extra 5 minutes doing it yourself. BUY IT! And as for the people who said the wires were too short and the system is weak, ALL LIES unless you put the thing in a 50x50 room and you sit a hundred yards away. lol. This thing will make your ears bleed if you want it to. Seriously.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Home Theater System, December 26, 2007
This review is from: Sony HT-SS2000 Component Home Theater System for Sony Blu-Ray Players (Electronics)
Pros: Great Sound for the price, 3HDMI Inputs
Cons: Auto Calibration

This is a great Home Theater System. Excellant Sound Quality.
Auto Calibration sucks. Please don't try that. The sound was much better before Auto Calibration. Then, I un-loaded the Auto Calibration. There is a setting Load Auto CAL - Y/N. I choose N and I got back the quality sound.
Other thing, I feel missing here is to have different setting for different mode. I mean, I change Bass, Treble for Movie Mode and it carries forward for Music mode as well. I would prefer to have different Bass/Treble setting for Movie and Music mode, which is not possible.
Other than these, this system is a great buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great System, April 25, 2008

For around 3 bills I don't see how you could find anything better than this Sony system. Take the time to calibrate on your own (read the manual) and the sound will be worth well more than what you spent. Ordered this from Amazon and was at my place in like 2 days....I really cant complain about anything with this system....its so much better than TV sound and has a lot of power. If you want inexpensive, crisp 5.1 audio with 3 HDMI inputs, go get this baby.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great and reasonably priced, January 28, 2008

I purchased this to go with my Sony Bravia 52" LCD HDTV. I haven't had a lot of Sony products in the past but I decided to go with this because of the price and the syncing with other Sony products. This is my first home theater system and I have been impressed. Set up was simple and I had no problems. I simply connected other components with HDMI cables into the respective inputs and one HDMI cable from the receiver to the TV. This does not include a DVD Player as some do. Be careful when purchasing, some home theaters do NOT have HDMI inputs! When I turn on/off the TV, the home theater also turns on/off. I am impressed.

Looking for a simple to use, but effective system to match up with my new Sony HDTV. The SS2000 was recommended to me by the salesperson. He was right but I couldn't find one in any store in our area. Bought it online from Amazon. The unit performs well, was easy to hook up, and even my wife can operate it. The speakers are good and HDMI passthrough is great. I am happy.

5.0 out of 5 stars As good as it gets, March 26, 2008

Sony...a name we all love and trust. I had a friend who just bought a Bose surround sound system (approx. $450). It sounds very good. I just hooked up my Sony HT-SS2000. Let me say that personally, the less expensive, better looking Sony (to match my Sony Blu-Ray player BDP-S301), sounds much cleaner and fuller than my friend's Bose system. To top that, even he likes it a little better. I read the review before I bought this HTIB and people were saying that it was okay for the price and it was okay for a small room. My living room is about 16 x 16 and not only does it fill the room with sound but I can hear it outside with the door closed and the sound turned only halfway up.

I tend to try to stick with Sony. I already mentioned my relatively new Blu-Ray player (if you don't have one, get the BDP-S300 or S301). Aside from the PS3 these particular players have the fastest load times. Once the movie is loaded, the player is as fast as a dvd player. I digress...back to the matter at hand. A few people mentioned that the passive subwoofer (no power cord to plug in...runs from signal straight from receiver)was sub-par. B.S....this subwoofer sounds phenomenal!

Bottom line, Sony products rock and this system is the finest of the finest. Do yourself a favor and get this awesome system while you can. Why not get some speaker stands too and really set this thing up. With Amazon, you can't go wrong anyways (love that Amazon Prime).

4.0 out of 5 stars Good sound - decent price, January 16, 2008

This is my first ever surround sound system and it's just what I expected. Crisp clean sound. It may not compete with "expensive" set-ups but for people who simply don't have the money to the high-end equipment this definately gets the job done. I only wish they would of included an on-screen menu that would display on the TV but oh well.

I have had this unit for close to 4 months now. One of the main reasons for getting this unit was the multiple HDMI ports on the back and the 1000 watt capability. Despite what many reviews say on here, the sound is truly amazing. While its not as nice as the Bose, its pretty high up their. Their are a few times when I hear noises through one of the side speakers and think its a noise in the other room. The auto-calibrate is bogus and the menu through the small lcd screen does get annoying sometimes, but overall its a great surround sound system for the price. I have the bass setting fairly low, and even then it cause some rattling with furniture in the room. I would not recommend this for someone in an apartment, as it can get pretty loud without realizing it (found out the hard way). The audio sync function is great for matching up with the TV speakers, as sometimes one will have a slight delay.

Note: The center channel does not line up with the Sony SU FL300L TV stand brackets. If you have this TV stand and want to attach the center channel in its described location, you will have to either drill new holes or get different brackets.
