My older Sony is obsolete as Sony no longer supports it with updated software to Win7.Decided to update to newer stereo model.
It has a built in USB connector which is very handy. The included software works extremely well...found all my music albums and transferred to my 4GB micro SD card leaving the original 4GB for additional live recording. Controls are easy to use and suspect they will be durable as my old one got heavy and hard use and always worked (but still ticked they didn't provide an upgrade to Win 7 that worked).
Sound quality for recording music is OK although for really high quality I will always prefer my Zoom H4n...but it is larger. This one fits in a shirt pocket.
For voice I use it to record data in the dark...I am an astronomer...and this works great. The bult in back light is handy although I put a piece of red gell over the light so it won't effect my night vision.
Battery life is about 22 hours and while it can get hours of recording time at lower quality levels...at the highest quality (the only one I use) it gets about 6 hours on 4GBs.
Pros....the single AAA nimh rechargeable battery is recharged via the USB connector...and the battery is included.
But you can also use any AAA battery rechargeable or otherwise (it has option to turn off charging if need with non rechargeable battery).
Cons...no included case.

This recorder is a replacement for another Sony recorder I still use. I needed an upgrade. This item is great, works well, has great sound quality and I always trust Sony for making good products. This recorder, unlike my previous recorder, can be connected to my computer and files transferred that way. Works well. I am very pleased with my purchase. Holly Kaczmarski

I love this recorder. As a writer, I am constantly recording ideas and/or conversations. This unit fits nicely into my pocket so I can take it anywhere. And it's easy to operate in a hurry. I especially like the built in USB connector.

This recorder provides surprisingly good sound quality with good sensitivity for voice recordings. I have tried it with the Sony powered external microphone, but I find that the recorder itself provides a better recording without using any external mike. There are sensitivity levels you can play with. Dictation or personal notes will probably be a little better with low sensitivity, since you are speaking right into the microphone. High sensitivity works great for room recording, such as lectures, meetings, etc. In addition to sensitivity, you can choose the recording quality or resolution, up to LPCM 44/16. The tradeoff is that a lower quality recording uses less space on the chip, but on a 8 gb chip at full LPCM 44/16 you can record about 12 hours, which is more than the battery will last anyway. Just use the highest quality recording. The only reason for using a low quality recording would be if you want to record for a week or so before downloading it; then you want to maximize the chip capacity, but even then, you can overcome this problem by using a larger chip and replacing the battery when it is dead. It does have a speaker and earphone jack, so you can play back immediately if desired. You can use a patch cord and play through your car's aux input to listen to recordings on the way home, and after that, you can listen through your computer. Playback through a computer or sound system will be superior to what you hear through the recorder's own speaker. The files are named by time stamps. Since it is digital, you can simply jump to the next file. There is no need to move through a linear recording, as with a tape. You can use five folders for storing files, so this makes it easier to find what you want. For example, you can use a separate file folder for each subject.Read more ›
