4.0 out of 5 stars One of the few nice pocket radios, July 19, 2004

Hey - call me an old guy, but I wanted a decent "transistor" radio with a built in speaker to take fishing, ball games, or to keep in an emergency kit. Only problem is that most radios these days suffer from terrible reception. Not so with this Sony. AM reception is exceptional when compared to a typical CD/Radio combo. It picks up my favorite AM sports station clearly, where most of my other portables won't. FM reception is slightly above average. I have a very powerful FM station close by, and most other radios will pick it up on several spots across the dial. This radio is selective enough not to get swamped by that station, yet sensitive enough to still pick up stations across the dial. I've got a pile of Rad Shack, Coby, etc. radios that don't even compare, and some costed more! Only gripe is that the antenna doesn't swivel 360° - but whaddya want for 10 bucks I suppose. :)

4.0 out of 5 stars Collapse the FM antenna, March 5, 2001

The ICF-S10 is a pretty good AM/FM pocket transistor radio for the money. However, as the previous reviewer noted, the FM section does suffer from signal overload in strong-signal areas (such as in cities where there are lots of transmitters). When that happens, you usually find one station at 2 or 3 parts on the dial.

I've found that keeping the FM whip antenna collapsed helps keep such interference to a minimum. All things said, however, it's a nice-sounding radio for its size.

3.0 out of 5 stars just your average radio, January 9, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: Sony ICF-S10MK2 Pocket AM/FM Radio (Electronics)
I purchased this radio about a year ago at a department store and found it to be just ok, nothing out of the ordinary. AM reception is good, but FM isn't great. In weak signal areas FM reception is good but in strong signal areas it picks up a lot of interference and because of this it won't pull in the distant stations well. Other than that it's very small so it is convienient to carry around. It also has a telescopic antenna for FM that can be extended and pivoted left or right to get the best reception. I used mine at the beach and it worked well particularly because there was no strong signal where I went. Overall it makes a great pocket radio but if you live where there's strong FM reception I'd recommend looking for another model.
