Which Size HDTV is Right for My Room?
HDTV Size chart
With standard-definition TVs, the rule used to be that viewers would feel comfortable watching a set from a distance of 3 to 6 times the screen size in inches. With HDTV, the resolution is so much better that you can sit closer to a larger TV without noticing the pixels. So with HDTVs, the rule tends to be you can sit anywhere from 1.5 to 3 times the screen size (in inches) for the best experience.

If you know the size of the room you have already, where you want to sit, and where your new HDTV should go once you get it, you can figure out the size HDTV you should get.

  • Minimum size = Viewing distance/3
  • Maximum size=Viewing distance/1.5

The remote control is easy to type for internet use and the manual is very user friendly to look for specific information.

Maybe they hope that all of the problems with the unit will make the customer's head explode and dead men can't return electronics.
Mountain Bob
Love not having to have additional equipment to watch a movie and the wireless connection to the internet for Netflix works great.

I was looking to buy an LCD TV for past 1 year and specifically want Internet content. It paid off with SONY KDL32EX40B. It has internet content, it has Blu Ray player, excellent menu design, easy to operate, all in one functionalities.I ordered immediately and I got TV 3 days ago. It has easy quick setup guide. The remote control is easy to type for internet use and the manual is very user friendly to look for specific information. With this TV, there is no need for seperate box of DVD/BD players and couple of remotes to operate.

The TV switched on perfectly and blu ray was able to play DVD's, CD and of course Blu Ray Discs. Now its time to connect LAN cable to TV. Here started the trouble. The TV just got hanged when I turn it OFF and turn it ON back again because of Internet connectivity. when i disconnected the LAN cable, it works fine, but freezes when connected to Internet.I called Sony Customer Care and they asked to reset the TV to Factory settings. But still no use. so they sent a new replacement TV. To my frustation, this TV also came up with same issue. When i called customer care, they escalated to Product support specialist and they assisted to DOWNLOAD new FIRMWARE and installed it to TV. Awesome, it works now !!

TV's which are manufactured before June 18th (Sony released new firmware for this TV - [...]) have this problem of freeze and reboot by itself.

I am bit disappointed with Sony, if it has released firmware for particular model then why it hasn't updated at the time of shipping or atleast it should advised when i called for Sony customer care for first time rather than sending replacement TV.

I am enjoying this TV with all internet content fully loaded and its an amazing piece if you have home theatre system too.

Two of these are sitting in my living room, and they are both going back. This would be a great product, if it worked for more than one day. Sony is shipping these units with a major software flaw. Among other problems, after one day of use, the unit cycles on and off in three minute intervals. Enjoy THAT while you are trying to watch a show.

We wanted a one box/one cord option for TV and DVD player in a smaller room. This product would be perfect, if it worked. We had the exact same experience with two different units--an original order and a replacement. Some difficulty with initial setup because the unit was reluctant to respond to the remote control. With multiple resets, that resolved. Then the unit worked fine for one day. Picture was very good. DVD player was fine.

Second day, the problems began. First, the on-screen volume display went away. Next, the actual sound went on strike. Then, the unit began cycling off and on, endlessly. Two minutes on, 30 seconds off, more or less. Continues until you are crazy. Then, the unit becomes totally unresponsive to the remote and the DVD player quits.

Spent HOURS with Sony "customer service" either by phone or online chat. First rep made me spend a full hour trying various reset commands. After all of that time-wasting, he asked me for the serial number. As soon as I read the number to him, he replied, "Oh, that's a defective unit. We will send you another."

Second unit arrives. Works fine--FOR ONE DAY! Next day, the exact same problems as the first unit. Phone support told me--wait for it--"Oh that's a defective unit." Just to torment myself, I tried chat support. That rep told me there was a software download that might fix the problem.

I have had this tv for about a week now and I must comment on how amazing it is. The setup was a breaze I have had NO problems with the connected apps. Netflix looks better on this tv then using the PS3 or the Wii. The bluray player loads fast and the and sound is great for just TV speakers. One feature I didn't think I would like is the Ambent light sensor. When it dimms the brightness of the tv when you turn the lights off it realy makes it easy to fall a sleep. The last thing I would like to talk about is the Xbar menu it work very well and it is user friendly to navagate. All in all I would recomend this tv to anyone.

As they say, the devil is in the details, and so it is with this product. First the good news: Playing Blu-rays delivers a good image, as we'd expect from Sony. But the shortcomings may outweigh the plusses, depending on how you use this TV.

For starters, playing DVDs shows lots of MPEG noise including mosquito noise, even when MPEG noise reduction is set to maximum. You also have to manually switch between 4:3 and 16:9 aspect ratios if you want to see DVDs undistorted (the "auto wide" feature is disabled for DVDs). If you burn your own DVDs, you can't simply insert and play: A techy-looking interface comes up, and you have to first confirm the media, and then confirm the track. Even after you've done this, an on-screen display shows technical details such as video and audio bitrates as each track starts to play. If you plan to use this unit exclusively for playing disks, you will see video noise until you start playing a disk. You will also hear loud static for about 2 seconds each time you turn on the TV, and eject a disk. This happens because the TV assumes you will connect it to cable or an antenna, or to some other device.

Assuming you connect this TV to another video device and/or cable or antenna, and you rarely play DVDs, it has a fair bit to offer in terms of playing other media from disk or USB memory sticks. It also offers access to a wide variety of Internet services such as YouTube, pictures, etc., though I did not explore these items, as the unit did not meet my needs (a gift for my mom).

Depending on your expectations and intended usage, either you'll love this combo unit, or it'll leave you cold. As with all products, it's important to be well informed before making your purchase decision.
