At 48 inches diagonal, Sony's KP-48V80 has one of the smallest footprints of any of the company's console-sized "big-screen" TVs. Still, it's more than a foot larger than the biggest direct-view sets out there - and should slake some of your thirst for big instant replays and talking heads. The KP-48V80 also has the best feature set of any Sony rear projector of this size. The KP-48V80 isn't missing much in the way of options. Its 3D-YC comb filter is the best at reducing cross-color and other kinds of artifacts that plague big-screen TVs. This Sony provides selectable color temperatures. The protective high-contrast screen is great for shielding the TV from harm, but does nothing to enhance picture quality. Fortunately, it can be removed. For convenience buffs, Sony's dual-tuner PIP (picture-in-picture) lets you view two programs at once in several ways. Two channels of the same size can appear side by side. Or you can choose the more traditional configuration of a smaller window within the larger main one. The small box can be moved anywhere around the screen. Although it lacks the on-screen program guide found on some other sets, the KP-48V80 does let you label up to eight of your favorite channels. The remote control, which is preprogrammed to operate other Sony gear and many brands of cable boxes, has both backlighting and a joystick. S-Link jacks enable communication with other similarly equipped Sony components. An audio system with 20 watts x 2 channels and simulated surround sound completes the feature package.
