After agonizing for months over which shelf system to purchase, I am quite pleased with this. I wanted something that could play classical, jazz, reggae and Afro-Cuban. This provides good sound and rhythm across the board. It has an equalizer with a jazz setting that does nicely with classical as well.

There are specific reggae, salsa & samba settings. Ernesto Lecuono rhumbas sound fine on the latter.

The speakers are powerful enough to rock the casbah and maintain sound clarity at the higher volumes. I seldom push it past two thirds of its capability.

I'm not an audiophile, merely a music lover. Can't believe how satisfied I am at so low a price and I'm not easily pleased. I wrote this review to save others the months of indecision I experienced.

I have been eyeing this stero at Best Buy for a while now and Final was able to get it. This thing is a monster in size and power. My current stero was a JVC 500W, I had that for 2 years and it was a great system, But I wanted to get a new stereo with more power. I love strong bass and this stereo has plenty of it. It handles very very good, The sound does not get distored when On high volumes.

I like that it has a 5 cd try rather than the common 3 cd tray. Plays MP3 cds. U can connect a Microphone to it, I connected my pc to it so i can listen to my music and watch tv and movies with 560Ws of power!!

However I do wish the main unit was a bit smaller, Its gives the impression that it's a powerful system. I had to take it out of its Box and put it in my car lol.

Overall I love love this system!!!! Its well worth its price. + Sony is a great company and their products last a long time. My sister had a Sony stero for a good 6 or 7 years. BUY THIS STEREO

I bought this item the day after I reveived my JVC HX-D77 540-Watt DVD Mini System. why? The JVC has a HUGE sound and is great, but a couple things rubbed me wrong. First, none of the good sound settings work with video input i.e. theater surround type settings. Second the "sound turbo" function is hardly noticable on the JVC! Third, the JVC was cosmetically cartoonish. Don't get me wrong...It's a killer system for my 17 year-old son! (that's where it ended up.) The SONY is a better all around system, sounds great at all volume levels, crystal clear highs and HUGE punching bass as well! Further, it looks like a stereo system as much as it functions like one. It has the old-school dual tape player/recorder, a much sturdier build than the JVC, especially the CD changer, and most importantly, an EQ that I can dial in to my own liking and create a preset sound for ME, as well as 10 preset EQ's. Again, this system lacks the settings I would like for movies,i.e. theater surrond, hall, live, etc. (the echo type sounds that I loved on my old Aiwa). There is a surround button that adds a little fullness to movies, but no adjusting it. At one point I had both the JVC and SONY in the same room and I go with the SONY! It's just better IMHO. (my son would argue that the JVC wins.)

Last night we put it to the test. My 9-year-old daughter had a 70's disco party at our home. This stereo rocked the house!!! And the volume wasn't anywhere near topped out. Sound still very clear, absolutely no distortion. One warning: measure your space before ordering. The speakers are 3 feet tall, and the "unit" is about 2-1/2 feet tall - ain't no shelf I've seen with shelves that wide. So, if you've got room, get this stereo!

The system is visibly pleasing but it is under the hood that's great! Sound quality is excellent. User friendly controls. Easy set-up. The FM antenna quality allowed us to receive the FM channels we like. Can record cd's to tape. I have old and new cassette tapes. They seem to play fine. If you can, have it delivered to the closest ingress area, unpack it and place items one at a time. The individual components are a bit heavy and tall. That said, I would buy it again in a heartbeat. Speaking of which, be careful where you purchase this. I had originally planned to buy this from Amazon, as usual. But I became adventurous and purchased it from SonyStyle.com (a subsidiary of Sony.com). The most generous evaluation I can give them is that they ship quickly but they would only get one star for that.

When I purchased this stereo as a gift for my wife, I was concerned by some reviewers distaste of its appearance. One even returned it because, though he said it sounded awesome, it looked too ugly to keep!
Shockingly, my wife loves the look of this old-school-style beast!
SO, now about the sound...
It can get LOUD! The speakers are really great quality and can punch it out without sweating. Cannot find the distortion level because our ears bleed before we can get to it!
Some of the other components may last or may not.
Disk tray seems flimsy, as well as cassette door.
This seems typical of any stereo put out these days.
Will not know about reliability until a few more months/years down the road. I would assume that something will go wrong with this stereo eventually. They don't make em like they used to in the 70's folks.
Overall, this stereo has some real kick to it. It might not look like the high-end stereos from the 70's, but it sure can sound like one!
This stereo was the perfect choice for us.

Let's ignore all the silly flashing lights that appeal to my 3-year-old...this feature has been well covered by other reviewers, and can be disabled.

When this arrives at your house, your first impression will be, "Hey, somebody has mailed me a Buick." Some compact stereo systems have to be assembled, this one is only in three pieces: the unit and the two speakers. But all three pieces have been placed into one enormous box, so that it cannot possibly be carried by one person without dragging it around like Linus' blanket. If you're buying this at a store, you'll need a pick-up truck or a hearse to get it home.

In regards to the cassette deck, the manual makes many references to "Type I" cassettes. That's right, this unit cannot handle the advanced technology of the "Type II" cassette that became widely available in the 1970s. This is just sad, did Sony have a bunch of 1968 tape heads in a warehouse that they needed to get rid of? Here in the 21st century, most $99 stereos handle "Type II" cassettes if they play cassettes at all, never mind all of my "Type IV" tapes.

I'll be holding onto my 10-year-old JVC compact stereo system, it doesn't play MP3 discs, but is superior in nearly every other way.

I bought this system for my school and it is perfect for our needs. It is really loud, enough to fill up a cafeteria or gym or even outdoors. The addition of 2 microphone jacks even makes it a PA system or great for kareoke. This system plays really loud without distortion. The CD player is sensitive so make sure it is on a rock solid playing base as the bass vibrations can cause it to skip.The students love the looks of the system and were in awe of it. For the money, you can not beat it!

This unit is replacing a Sony MHC-GX99 component system. The '99' totally crapped out after 6 months of light use...very disappointing!! I'm taking a chance on the ZX6, hoping it will last longer. Sure, they have a 1 year warranty and I could have had the other one fixed, however, that requires mailing the entire system back to Sony!! The effort and expense was just not worth it.

So far, so good with the ZX6 system. This baby does have some great sound and will pump out tunes at full volume with no discernable distortion (consider I'm old and have terrific tinitus). The system is a little slow when shuffling between CD's. The only thing I find lacking is a discrete equalizer. Yes, you can set a custom program for equalization, but, doing so is a PITA compared to an old fashioned equalizer with slide controls.

Overall, this is a great system and worthy of the 5 star rating. I just hope is lasts longer than the last one!!

I Have always been in into the best sound I can get at good prices. and Sony products always comes thru. This system does the job 10 times over. easy to install great sound and you can add on if you like. I recommend it highly and the price you can't beat.
