Promising Specs, Decent Sound, Disgusting Craftsmanship, October 18, 2003
This review is from: Sony MDR-CD380 CD Series Headphones with 40 mm Drive Units (Electronics)
I bought these as a replacement for my aging Koss R/100's(by far the best headphones I've ever owned).
When I took these out of the box, the first thing i noticed was that they looked to be very cheaply made. The entire headband is one thin piece of plastic, no padding at all. The earcups are padded in plain foam covered with thin cloth. After about 1 month of use, I picked them up one day and the headband had broken where the height adjuster is located.
I tried them on and played some rock, metal, and rap. The sound was good, but wasnt anything special. I have some tracks that go above 20khz, and below 20hz, and I don't believe i heard any sound outside of that range. Their 10hz-25khz rating is a bit optimistic, especially for a $30 pair of headphones.
If you baby them, these are decent sounding headphones. As far as durability and workmanship, they are worthless.

Durable, comfortable and great sound, January 31, 2011
This review is from: Sony MDR-CD380 CD Series Headphones with 40 mm Drive Units (Electronics)
I've had my MDR-CD380 for 7+ years. They've traveled with me around the world (various climates from tropical to temperate) and survived. The sound quality is very good and they're very comfortable - you can wear them for hours at a stretch, without your ear lobes feeling any pain at all, thereby allowing you to enjoy your music and carry you to another dimension :)
As I look ahead (may a few years down the line), I wonder what earphone can come close to this one as a replacement ?
