Great Sound!,

For the price, these can't be beat! I anticipated good sound coming out of our regular stereo system, but the fact that these give great sound from an ordinary portable CD player is a plus. Couldn't be happier!
Update [05/29/2007]: Still going stong - still great sound - after almost 3 years [October 2004]!

Great Sound, Extremely Comfortable,

These are awesome headphones that can easily handle all the output of any portable device. There is a fair amount of sound deadening on these headphones for i can barely makeout what people say when the volume is off, but when the using at high volume sounds and lyrics are audible across my small dormroom. These are easily the most comfortable over ear headphones i've ever tried. They play smoothly throughout the entire frequency range playing anything i listen to such hip-hop, pop, rock, and classical. These are full-size over-ear headphones but effectively do what they are intended to do. They also seem to be holding up well but i've only had them for a month in which they've been used daily.

Very Pleased,

I have been using poor headphones for awhile, so I decided to go out and buy a half-decent pair of cans. For the $.. range, the Sony's are very nice. They have a good padding design in the phones that keeps them extremely comfortable. Sound quality is soooooo nice compared to my old P.O.S. phones... I tried out some Sennheiser HD500's along with another Sony pair and these and comfort wise and sounds wise these are just great. Also, they do get very loud compared with the HD500's who didn't get even 75% of the volume of these phones. I would definitely recommend them to anyone with a semi-budget who wants a comfortable pair of phones.

Very pleased with these phones. ... so these were a very nice step up from what I had. I compared these to the Sennheiser HD500s and I liked these a lot better for a number of reasons. Comfort-wise these are fantastic! Sound wise these are nice, LOUD and great sound from lows to highs. ... these are high quality phones for the price.

yeah, i'd have to say these cans are pretty freakin' sweet. Sound is great, better than most sennheisers i've heard, especially at this price. The bass is mabye just a tad bassy, but barely. one of the most comfortable pair of headphones i've ever had the pleasure of putting on (around) my ears. They dont make your ears to warm like many high end phones, and the pads are uber soft. Sony may be a big faceless corporation, but they sure make some great audio equipment.

Great Quality and Durability,

These Headphones are great. I bought these about 4 or 5 years ago for like 150$. Last night I has to repair them, a screw holding the left earmuff to the headband came apart and had to fix it. Thats the only thing to ever go wrong with them. These are family headphones, used everysingle day. Used for watching dvd's on the hometheater system late a night, blasting music on the computer while my parents sit next to me watching the news; these puppies are great. I have never heard super good headphons like 650$ koss ones, but these are great. the sound is excleent, way better than any included computer sound system.

very good sound, ok comfort,
This review is from: Sony MDR-CD580 CD Series Headphones with Neodymium Magnets (Electronics)
I have been using these headphones for over three years with my laptop. The sound quality is good even for listening to symphonies or sophisticated jazz.
The main problem I have experienced is that my head is bigger than average, so these headphones put some extra pressure on my head, squeezing it to some extent and reducing the bloodflow. This effectively limits the time I can use it to 1-1,5 hours (perhaps 30-40 minutes comfortably), then I need to rest. That said, the sound quality is still so good that I can live with it, sometimes trying to readjust the headphones while listening to make it more comfortable. Also, to achieve good sound you need to have the music playing fairly loudly. Firstly, it may be disturbing to the people outside (as any headphones, to some extent.) Secondly, it is extra work for your ears. I wouldn't recommend that mode of listening for several ours every day --- this can probably hurt your ears in the long run. Maybe it happens with any headphones anyway... Overall, it is a pretty good thing, especially if your head is not that big.

Great Investment--Three Years Ago!,

If I could have reviewed these headphones when I bought them, I would have given them 5 stars easily, but that was awhile ago, and I purchased them for even less than what Amazon is listing them at now (I bought them for about 75 dollars--that was when a dollar was worth more than today). When I think about how long they have lasted, and the fact that I could get 40 bucks for them in resale value easily if they were sold today, I must say--this is one of the best electronic purchases that I have ever made! I only have a very minor short in the cord now, and that is replaceable anyhow, even though it is not even bothersome enough to replace yet...
Even so, I wouldn't sell these for 40 dollars, as they are still worth more than that to me while I wait for the next generation of headphones to hit the market in force (two years I wonder???). But I can not believe they have lasted as long as they have. I have used these about an average of two hours a day, and have probably used them for over a thousand hours total, and they still sound nearly as good as my dad's brand new $350 Bose QC3 or whatever the heck they are called. Granted, these are not noise-canceling, but if you listen to your music as loud as I do, you shouldn't need that nonsense (annoying battery charging feature and on/off switch anyhow); plus, my cord stretches a lot further and I can watch movies even though the receiver is on the other side of the room. In any case, I would still say these are a pretty good deal, but honestly...they should have a decent pair of wireless headphones on the market now that are full surround sound for $150 bucks. It's been over three years since I've bought these things, come on now. This is the world of electronics, not the internal combustion engine.

I was looking to replace an old pair of Koss(yard sale purchase years ago)with more comfort and maybe better sound. After reading 10 or more reviews I chose the Sony. Very comfortable. No clicks, hum,or buzz. The sound is good and picks up things on the cd's I had not heard on my speakers.I am glad I did not pay listed retail($99.99).I think these are a value at the Amazon price.I received excellent service through J&R electronics.I did not go 5 stars because I had no other brands of equal quality or price to listen to and compare.

Good Headphones for the Price,

I bought these as a replacement for my Bose Triport headphones. These are quite a bit larger than I expected, but the sound quality is fine and I'm happy with the purchase.
The cord is long enough for me to move about, and it plugs into the headphones as well, so if you accidently move too far the cord will merely disconnect, rather than pulling the headphones from your head, a fate which my Triports suffered regularly. Good mid-range headphones for a decent mid-range price. |
